    I watched your surviving in a car in winter video. Since snow is a great insulator, is it ever better to make a shelter out of snow. You could line it with a tarp and sleep inside it with your winter bag and wool blanket. Would that be warmer than the inside of your vehicle? Thank you for your information!

    • @survivalns124
      @survivalns124 7 месяцев назад

      In theory it sounds plausible, however, in order to make a viable snow cave you need about 10-12 feet of snow which has settled for quite some time in order for the snow cave to be stable once you begin to dig it out or else it will just crumble. Making a snow cave by the roadside will never work. Have you ever heard of anyone doing that? In the wilderness this becomes more plausible since the snow has had time to settle making it easier to construct one. If done properly, the inside of a snow cave the temperature can easily reach 0 degrees Celsius. Add a candle or two and it will be quite comfortable regardless of the outside temperature.

    Here in Ireland we have had -2 deg C! people get very flustered with a freezing temperature ! I think the many east Europeans who live here do laugh at us because in their home countries deal with maybe - 20 deg C. but Canada is something else, its a battle for survival. There is a lot of unusual weather around the world right now Jan '24. Because Ireland and England are islands they normally don't experience really cold weather, there is also Gulf Stream which comes across the Atlantic ocean to heat the Islands, but when you get into large land masses like Canada or Russia, its a different story

    I'm going to argue with you about food. I always carry two days worth of extra food (beans, rice, oats and or lentils) this is for two reasons. First is moral, having a full belly is comforting and will keep you optimistic. Second, processing wood and other tasks require energy. A few days without food and those tasks become much much harder. I have an "oh shit, I'm lost kit." That is a pack of cigarettes, a lighter, surveyors tape and a Snickers bar. Upon figuring out I'm lost, I light a cigarette and eat the chocolate bar. Then I mark where I am and walk 100 paces in each direction to try and find my trail. This helps me not to panic, which is the worst thing you can do when lost and often it gets me back to where I need to be. When I was tree planting, that kit saved me and my partner a dozen times.

    • @survivalns124
      @survivalns124 8 месяцев назад

      I would tend to agree with you about food should you be lost for more than 3 days. If you prepared well before starting out by notifying friends and family, then just stay put the minute you know you are lost. If you can retrace your steps to the last known waypoint on the trail, do so. If not, stay put and let them come to you.

      @@survivalns124 Maybe my experiences color my judgement. Again while tree planting, we got lost on the second day of a 10 day trip. We hadn't realized that they dropped us off in the wrong spot and the maps we had were useless. Rain killed our radios and this was before personal locator beacons. We had to move to find water and the day we were supposed to be picked up and the 3 following days we had severe weather that prevented the helicopter from coming to get us. Sometimes you just can't plan for a disaster. Since then, I carry extra food, I have the ability to carry 8 liters of water (normally I carry 2-3) and I always carry a poncho that'll cover me and my bag... And could be used as a tarp if necessary. Also I have a GPS locator beacon, it's not 100% reliable but still worth having.
