I’ve driven both quite a few times, I even own a 2013 BRZ. My answer would be Miata if you can fit, 86 if you don’t 😂 They’re both good in their own right but I can see the FA20 being a turn off for some
About to install the GTX2860 on my BRZ! Any tips for getting that flutter sound?
We’re not too sure what causes it tbh. I have the turbo smart bov and it’s plumbed to my break booster for the vacuum source (only able on 1st gen). It’s set to the softest setting but it happens on quick hard acceleration and then letting off. When under hard acceleration and then upshifting, it opens the bov. Andrew’s isn’t like that for some reason though. Not too sure why ://
@@carantixmy best guess is; softest blow off valve setting = less boost pressure required to open the valve. So when you floor it for a second and then let off the throttle the turbo spools up, but it doesn’t build enough pressure to open the bov, meaning that you get compressor surge stututu noises. When you accelerate for a long time and shift gears the turbo has time to reach full boost, and so you have enough pressure to push the bov open and release the air, causing the pshhh noise. So TLDR: turbo flutter comes from tightening the bov or getting rid of it entirely and blocking the hole. From what I’ve been told, having no bov wont actually damage turbos as long as you’re not pushing lots of boost, but having the bov just adds extra security and ensure the turbo lives it’s longest life.
Buy a mx5 and lease 86 , take a loan from bank for type R to take down mustangs, SS , chargers 😅 have a good life

Fab9 tunes ND2's. Plus a hand full of guys you can find on their forums that specialize in MX-5 ND2 tunes. Not going to mention the RTV issue on those 86's? Might want to let people know about the massive issues they have. Also, the ND1's had transmission issues, although they had a recall to address it. So if you buy an ND2 or ND3 you don't have to worry about that. Or you can just check if they had that recall fix done. 86's never had a recall for the RTV issue. Just lawsuits...

As an ND1 owner from new, i can say the car is very reliable (engine is fantastic), but there are known issues with the car you need to be aware of: (1) side window mechanism, the wire is steel so it rusts and snaps. You cant retract the roof until you fix it. (2) Rear hub bushing, these take a beating and are known to fail early. Mazda dont supply bushings, just the full hub, lol $$$$$ (3) For a car thats applauded for its handling, im genuinely baffled by all the praise. You DO need to lower it, you DO need a better sway bar, you DO need to remove the Bridgestone S001 stock tyres, they are horrible. Other than that, no issues 👍

Get sway bars and coilovers for an ND and it gets rid of the horrible body roll.
We definitely need to get swaybars for the Miata but even just coilovers do amazing work on its own!🤩🤩
definitely need to reclock the turbo to vertical. The drain line needs to be dead straight down, offset and oil will pool in the turbo and build up. I literally used a small level to mount my turbo when i turbo'd my 15 frs, buddy said it wasn't that serious lol

Turboing these cars scare me lol They have reliability issues stock with only 225HP naturally aspirated. This just feels like FA24 suicide, but I look forward to see how this goes.
It really is just up to luck that these things will hold at this point with the turbo lol. Supposedly it should hold good power especially with the fa24 as long as the rtv issues are solved first. We’ll see though😂😂

In this video it’s the remark elite spec catback. We personally like the new awe track edition exhaust that’s on Andrew’s car currently though! It’s way deeper and a bit louder…👀👀
White smoke , maybe the head gasket isn’t seated properly. Could be the torque sequence chosen to tighten the bolts. Idk the process you did for the rebuild but any head that comes off a running car should have its mating surface sanded/milled evenly at the very least. The block should be cleaned rough patches should be sanded lightly. Something’s wrong

We did have the short block and heads completely redone at a shop so it’s entirely possible the torque could be the problem. Personally we think somethings causing the valve guides to go bad but it’s all too hard to tell ://

@ haha somethin like that. I’ve wanted a Tesla since they came out in 2017 so I felt like it was time to finally pull the trigger, especially with how much used ones have come down in price. I love it though. The tech/minimalist interior/speed and little amt of maintenance is so nice. I got kind of bored doing the same mods over and over to gas cars so this is a nice change of pace, and there’s still tons of customization you can do to them as well! You really wouldnt need oem rtv. Permatex would work just fine.
You definitely could but we personally decided to go oem especially because of all the rtv problems that this car has. Which permatex bottle would you have recommended others to use? Just curious?
@ Yeah and those problems are with OEM RTV. I see your pan has excess pinching out of it which I would say is a bigger issue than using non oem RTV. I understand the piece of mind using it but I think this is a situation where it’s overkill. Not judging, just wanting to state there is nothing wrong with a good name brand RTV that isn’t $70. I enjoy yalls content so definitely keep it up!

Yeah, we realized after that there was some excess coming out and we could’ve used less for sure!😂😂 hopefully it doesn’t affect the pickup tube with what we put on though :// Also, we appreciate the advice for permatex and we’ll definitely try to save some money that way if we have to pull the oil pan again! @@Jaydeified permatex red is ideal for high temperature applications, but like, when I was in a pinch because I needed rtv late at night I used a tube of permatex black (which is general use rtv) that I got from Walmart for the bearing retainer cover on my transmission when I replaced my throw out bearing, and the transmission gets super hot too. It’s been a bit over a year since I used the rtv and there’s been no issues. If anything the permatex black literally sealed better than the oem crap I cleaned out of my brz. Edit: oh also, brand honestly isn’t what’s important. Getting a good even spread is important. When I did my tob and clutch I was taught to use my finger to spread the rtv and make it a nice evenly distributed layer across the entire contact surface. Because then once you press the 2 surfaces together, there won’t be a lot of excess pushed out, and there the rtv can set evenly to form a good and strong bond.

4 seater vs 2 seater. I managed to go on a camping trip with 2 other friends with my gr86. It would of been impossible with the mx 5
It's a 4 seater for people with no legs. Useful for luggage and other things tho.

Did JDL say anything about the cutting of the fan shroud? I don't think you needed to cut anything. What would you say was the hardest part of the install? The oil pan? Is that where you supposed to mount the boost controller?
The turbo could have been clocked more to get the wastegate over the fan shroud but we were just lazy and decided it was easier to cut the fan shroud instead of clocking the turbo. Especially since we were waiting on a response for a while and it should’ve been clocked by JDL already since it was their test kit. Hardest part of the install was definitely the couplers. Getting the tubes within the couplers with c clamps on top of them was the most pain in the ass thing we had to do😂😂Oil pan was easy though :) You could mount your boost controller in plenty of different places, especially away from the heat of the turbo however this is currently what has been working for us so we just left it lol. We will probably end up moving it in the future though!
Should have checked inside the pickup tube for rtv pieces, it’s a known issue

That's cool. Smart to go with the smaller turbo. More fun overall. I have the Sprintex supercharger and get about 300 wheel. Way more fun to drive.
How’s the sprintex? I was planning on going that route. Love the whine and immediate torque.

@@chrisyang3824 The Sprintex is great. I had added the Pedal Commander earlier on and that was like getting a tune. The combination is just fantastic.
@@Cole_brz I have gone ~10,000 miles so far. I hear you about the psi. The standard math says that with that much psi you would be at 400+ hp, but it's not. PSI is high but volume isn't. I daily drive it and love it. So much stronger near the bottom of any gear. And way stronger at 4000+. Seems to respond more to percentage throttle increase than anything else. I'm averaging 27.5mpg on my daily commute but if I start pushing it all the time I get 23.

noisy engine sounds like low oil pressure , missing restrictor on turbo oil line will cause this and blue smoke
It definitely could be! We’re pretty sure they come with oil restrictors from JDL for the turbo already though. We could be wrong tbh?😂😂
hey i hope the build goes great, as some one who just had their boosted one blow i would change the head gaskets and studs for a more relaible 400 thats where mine died at. cheers and i hope u get 100000 miles outta that engine brother. and great content as always
Are you on the 1st gen FA20? FA24 has stronger internals
@uNsT0p4b1e I have an fa24 the headbolts can be a little weak my engine also had 45k+ miles on the engine. As they say more power will accelerate the deteration of the engine. I was also a firm believer that 400 was a safe amount from the videos I watched and now my head is blown Also for reference I had the larger jdl turbo 58mm
@@jacobimerini7774 Oh damn thanks for sharing and sorry to hear that. I'm getting my supporting mods in order and then plan to turbocharge next year with the GT2971R. Was thinking of the GTX3071R to run lower boost and have less chance of heat soak, but seems people are having the best luck with small turbo setups I also figured 400whp should be decently safe. Might just aim for 360-380whp on E85
@@uNsT0p4b1e yea man I'm just happy to share my experiences with the community so people can enjoy their builds. I went with the larger turbo so I could run lower boost but I got greedy I would do 360 and play it safe. Unless you can afford getting a new engine on top of a turbo

Would you mind sharing what your whole setup was? Like did you have an oil cooler, upgraded rad, cerakoting, hood vents etc to help with heat management?
