Warpstock 2022 - D3S3 - ArcaOS Clarifications
I'm sorry that nobody feels my questions are worth responding to. I really LOVED OS/2 once the beta for OS/2 2.0 came out and I would be one of those people that would LOVE to drop MacOS and go back to OS/2. I've found the programs that I used to love to run and if needed I could use OpenOffice. And I have over 50 DOS programs like Links Golf for DOS that ran its best when installed on OS/2 in a DOS session that was modified to make every bit of memory available, more than what you could do booting DOS by itself. And like I've said, I've got a bunch of other games that I'd love to play. But I can't use an OS that everyone has given up on. I STRONGLY feel that a 64-bit version that could run everything including 32-bit OS/2 programs would breath new life into OS/2. You could work with people that are helping Haiku to create drivers for 64-bit Haiku by using source code from Linux and modifying it to be OS/2 drivers. And yes, I know what it is like and how much energy goes into modifying a program to run on multiple OSs. Due to severe chromic pain it is hard for me to think anymore let alone program. But back in the '90s I wrote custom programs including VERY custom print drivers for work for DOS, Windows AND OS/2. OS/2 was my primary OS for five years and if I couldn't find an OS/2 program for something I created them for myself and my boss to use. We worked for a mortgage company and there were only two of us to create and update software for people to go into our branches and fill out the paper work to apply for a new mortgage loan. And we had over 250 different loan types, most of them branches from about 15 different loan types but still we had to keep everything up to date each year based on federal laws. We, mostly I, created from scratch and then maintained and wrote new software for the loan accounting department to process all of the incoming checks for people that were paying their mortgage. One type alone was a huge program. It was for one or more people selling a home to one or more people and they would pay us to connect the money from one or more people and distribute the money to one or more people. It was called, "Contract Collections". We used WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3 and we had plenty of spreadsheets that had programs running and not crashing when booted up to DOS and running Win 3.1 and even Windows '95, '98 and ME. So for those people I installed OS/2 with a skin that made it look like it was a version of Windows instead of a different OS. And they very, very, very rarely had problems with their spreadsheets running in a Win 3.1 session in OS/2 while they had all sorts of problems with native Win 3.1. We also used EFS (Electronic Forms Systems) software to create a database of forms which we called up and merged with our data so that we no longer had pre-printed forms. I was in charge of that too. And because our bank was too cheep to buy a second printer for all our branches everything we printed went from our server through an EFS "print server" which was between our Novell server and our printers. EFS was great for writing a program and telling it what form and merge the data and print ONLY the copies of the form when we needed it so we didn't waste a ton of money on pre-printed forms. But we also printed EVERYTHING ELSE through that EFS print server and when we did it stripped EVERYTHING except for the text out of the print job. I mean every space, every tab, every new line. Everything was just crammed together with only letters and numbers. I created print drivers for ALL of the DOS and Windows programs that we used so that it would fool the EFS "print server" to pass all the fonts, all the spaces, all the everything along with the text until we could print from every DOS and Win 3.1 AND OS/2 program that we used. Because I had to create print drivers for all of them. Time I really didn't have so I neglected my wife and I worked fourteen hour days for a month for just that alone to get printing to working before our "go live" date with the EFS software while convincing my wife not to divorce me. I KNOW how hard it is to keep all the plates spinning at the top of the wooden sticks. You're old enough to know what I'm talking about if you are reading this. When I left the bank to work for another organization I had over 500 people running OS/2 on their computers. That doesn't sound like a lot but believe me I had to FIGHT for every time I bought a license for OS/2. I had to show the bosses WHY I wanted to install OS/2 on those people's computers. I had to go through four layers of management up to the CEO of the bank to get OS/2 authorized to run on those computers. And I had to fight all over again for each major update for OS/2. When I left the bank the person that had my job after me didn't start until after I had left. He called to ask me where to find this version of Windows that I had installed on peoples' computers. While management knew it was OS/2, most of my users threw a fit when I wanted to install something OTHER than Windows because they were ignorant and scared to use anything else. That's what keeps people stuck using Windows and MacOS. FEAR. Well I just pretended that it was a special version of Windows and I showed them how to run their programs which really wasn't any different than Windows except that they had almost no problems and all the "fires", well 99% of the fires I used to have management hundreds of computers got a lot simpler once I installed OS/2 on them and the people believed that it was just another version of OS/2 that you could only get for businesses. And once they used it they loved it and I "confessed" to about 50 people that it wasn't really a version of Windows but a totally different OS that was able to run Windows programs faster and with FAR less problems than Windows ever could hope to. And that includes Windows 11. So if you can't be bothered to respond to my comments here, how do you expect to find any new users to keep OS/2 alive once the old white men that still want and need to support OS/2 die off. There aren't any "young ones" in your videos that are going to keep ArcaOS going as customers. They are going to convert everything to run on a piece of **** OS, most likely Windows, and OS/2 will finally go away because even people like me aren't worth responding to. I mean why even bother putting this up if my comments aren't worth responding to. And I'm sure that if you ever see this you will have noticed that I'm the only one yelling in the desert trying to find a drop of water.
I KNOW that talking about 64 bit OS/2 is something people WANT to talk about but ArcaOS is LOATH to talk about. What I would like to know is how much it would take to make a 64-bit version of OS/2 that could run multiple 32-bit OS/2 sessions as well as 16 & 32-bit Windows and 8bit or 16 bit DOS (I can't remember which DOS is). This would set OS/2 up for the future where legacy apps could still run but at the same time it would open up OS/2 to people who right now wouldn't think of OS/2 because it is only a 32-bit OS and 64-bit apps can't be created. For those that still are developing 32-bit OS/2 apps, they could also recompile to 64-bit for their programs and I'm sure that others would be interesting in helping out to make 64-bit apps where they couldn't be bothered making 32-bit OS/2 apps. If nobody asks then nobody seriously thinks about it and then nothing even has a hope of happening. Just as a note. The Haiku group of programmers has been working with the Linux programmers to get wifi drivers and multiple other things migrated from Linux over to Haiku. Is the OS/2 audience smaller than the number of people interested in Haiku? And keep in mind, how many people might be interested in OS/2 if there was a 64-bit version that could run everything the 32-bit OS could run PLUS 64-bit versions of programs. I can't picture spending $1400 on a tower PC that can use modern motherboards and CPUs but the OS can only use 4 GB of space unless programs are made special to use anything above 4 GB. I just don't see people putting in the effort to modify their programs to use the space above 4GB for a very small audience. I feel that there would be a MUCH larger audience for a 64-bit version of OS that can also run 32-bit OS/2 programs as well as all the old DOS and Windows programs that current and previous versions of OS/2 can run. Keep in mind, I would want OS/2 to be THE best at running vintage software like Links Golf for DOS with all the courses (over a dozen?), as well as DOOM 1 through DOOM 3 including all the D!Zone 150 levels on one CD, plus Heretic, Hexen, Hexen 2, Quake 1, 2, 3 and 4 and the mission packs. Plus Dragon Age and the Tomb Raider games. But I want people to recompile their programs for 64-bit OS/2 and I believe that if they still have the source code and the will they could and would compile a 64-bit version of their programs. And I really see people wanting to port 64-bit programs and games to a 64-bit OS/2 if you make it they will come. Meanwhile work with people that work on Linux and Haiku. I'm sure they could give you valuable help in porting drivers for all kinds of hardware including wifi. Am I willing to pay for 32-bit OS/2 with me having to buy the hardware to run it? NO! Am I willing to pay for 64-bit OS/2 that can do everything that you can expect 32-bit OS/2 to run PLUS 64-bit OS/2 programs? YES! YES! YES! YES! PS: The beta of OS/2 2.0 was the first and only OS that I really LOVED using. It literally replaced two DOS and two Win 3.1 computers because it could run all my apps at the same time and they didn't crash or freeze, unlike stand-a-lone DOS or Win 3.1 could say. And that was even with me using four modems to connect to servers in four different locations where we pushed data out to servers and retrieved data from the same servers (both directions) with ZERO problems which DOS and Windows 3.1 or even Windows 10 could or can say.
The comment is that users don't read the manual. We WOULD if there was a lot less GEEK SPEAK in the manuals. You have to have it READABLE by basic users because I might have a lot of experience with Macs or Windows or Linux but I might not have the TYPE of knowledge as it relates to OS/2 so while I might be experienced in another OS, if you ASSUME that we know X when we don't then the user is screwed and we stop reading the manual. If the manual writer understands that and someone can proof read it and highlight all the GEEK SPEAK and it gets rewritten until all of that is translated into American or English (there IS a different), etc.. Anyway, we will read the manual when it is READABLE. In too many cases that is NOT true so we give up and just start trying things and/or we start reaching out asking for help. Well why didn't you read the manual. I did until I didn't know what this Geek Speak means and therefore I'm stuck and the Geek Speak is never taken out and replaced with common descriptions of what you are trying to refer to.
RE: 64 bit OS/2 - First, I KNOW that programs would have to be re-written for programs to work in 64 bit OS/2. HOWEVER, would it be possible to have 32 or 64 GB of RAM and have the 64 bit OS/2 take up 24 GB of RAM and then run one or more 32 bit OS/2 sessions running one or a few programs inside of that PLUS 16 and 8 bit versions of Windows 3.1 and DOS. Since I have no clue what that would entail, I have no idea what people are doing with OS/2, so I have no idea if that is something that has been thought about and what that would take. Sorry but if I was aware of Warpstock 2024 and that I could have used some program from MacOS (the OS I'm currently using) to join into the session than I would HAPPILY connect to Warpstock 2025. PS: I would like to refer to my previous comment here about having a program that people could run that they could send to you where you could upload all the different configurations into a database and then share that information with us during the conference as far as "Where does OS/2 go next?". I would like a desktop tower that can hold 4 SSDs or 4 HDD or a combination there of, inside the tower. I would be running ONLY OS/2, most likely ArcaOS since that seems to have the most development right now, and I would expect to have somewhere around 64 GB of RAM. I do current have three external 8 TB HDDs that I use for storage and backups for MacOS right now.
RE: WIFI drivers - There is the Haiku group which is creating an open source version of BeOS which they call "Haiku". They have someone that has done a LOT of work for wifi drivers. Now I KNOW that Haiku and OS/2 are different. But could your person talk with their person and see how much of the work that has been done for Haiku could translate into OS/2? I KNOW that it would not be a drag-n-drop kind of thing but would be something that would still take a lot of work and I don't know how much reward there would be for OS/2 users because I don't know how many OS/2 users there are. But they did have someone or DO have someone who is currently getting wifi to work in Haiku so MAYBE enough of the heavy lifting is done that it would be worth it to consider native wifi drivers for OS/2. Just a thought. Maybe the projects could in some way help each other.
One person that was there commented about how different DOS and Windows apps behavior differently depending on the hardware. If something could be setup and EASILY FOUND where we would have a utility that determines what hardware we have and then we run a DOS or Windows or even OS/2 program and then have a form where we can attach our hardware profile (I don't run OS/2 currently but am thinking SERIOUSLY about it but am not sure what hardware to buy - I want a desktop tower where I can install a minimum of three internal hard drives/SSDs or a combination of those depending on cost of each but I NEED at least 3 TB of disk space but I do have an 8 TB HDD that I could use if the full hdd can be used for an OS/2 partition or I could split it up into two sections). Anyway, my point is, for those that have OS/2 computers, if there was a utility where we could run it and then save it as a file which could then be attached to a survey of the program that we are trying to run and what is happening when we try to run it. Obviously we would need the full program name, what OS it was made for, the version of the game and any other info that someone thinks we should need and then we should be able to attach our hardware profile to the survey. Note: It should easy to be able to keep ALL of the info so that if we fill out the survey again the hardware profile can be automatically updated or rerun if there were hardware changes since the last time, and then we would fill out the form with out name and other info automatically filled in for us so that it would be more likely that people would complete the survey for each program.
Doesn't anyone find this site and comment to it? I would love for anyone that sees this to respond to this comment. Have you seen this and can you comment? I will be looking for any responses during the next seven days and then maybe in a month to see if anyone else comments.
I also wrote from scratch ALL of the programs used by the Loan Accounting office. That was actually how I got my job with the bank in the first place was that they needed help with that department. They had a heavy work load and they were having lots of errors and it was all being done manually at that point. I was working as a temp for the bank on a small project when I noticed that department could really use someone automating their processes. Because I did such a good job they hired me as a junior programmer with me eventually being the senior programmer for the mortgage and leasing software for our bank. I noted in another comment about Electronic Forms. Our bank could be overly cheap to the point that it cost us more money than if they had just done something like buy another printer for each site so that each site had at least two printers in case one went down and so that each printer had half the usage and would last a lot longer for each location. With them being unwilling to buy a second printer and with us going to electronic forms that created a problem. We had no way to print from the server to the printer without going through a PC which had all our electronic forms on it. And when you printed a WordPerfect or Lotus 1-2-3 file to the printer through this electronic forms database PC, it would strip out EVERYTHING except for the text or numbers meaning that all new lines, all spacing, all changing in fonts, everything you could imagine you would need in a document or spreadsheet file was stripped out and unusable. Without anyone asking me to and me seeing no other way of solving this except for buying another printer which management was loathe to do, I ended up writing new print drivers for DOS, Windows and OS/2 computers so that I could feel the electric forms database PC into thinking that text with all formatting was comments so that it passed through that PC that was between the server and the printer and made it to the printer which had no idea what comments were so it just processed all text and formatting coming through as it normally would if you had a normal print driver with no computer between the server and the printer. I also used R:Base to create all the databases that the bank needed because it had DOS, Windows and OS/2 native versions of the database so that it didn't matter which OS you used, it would process and display the data in the exact same way. I also used Lotus 1-2-3 and Describe for OS/2 (because WordPerfect for OS/2 was at best was HORRIBLE to use compared to the DOS and Windows versions).
I'm not sure if anyone is even looking to see what people are saying since there are no comments and it still says there are "0 comments" even though I've already posted two comments. Anyway, so I used to be the junior programmer for mortgage software but that was just part of what I did with programming. I also found a partially written program for connecting multiple modems to an OS/2 computer. Both using each modem as a single model but also using up to four modems appearing to be one modem. This was on IBM's bulletin board. I downloaded the partially written code and the compiler that they said they used, and I worked on that software and I was indeed able to get four modems working as separate modems to where I was able to start four batch files, each of them connecting to computers 5 miles away or up to 50 miles away from where I was and I was able to download and upload files in the 100 mb size range. My boss and I were able to write software that compressed the data AS IT WAS BEING SENT and not before the upload/download was started, and later we encrypted the data AS IT WAS BEING SENT so not before hand. We did this with four separate modems dialing up and calling four different computers in four different locations. We found that we were able to do so without ever a loss of connection which never could be done with a large file with only one modem on DOS or Win 3.1 for workgroups. I then found that I was able to complete the software so that I could use 2 or 4 modems AS ONE modem so that it took only 60% of the time or 40% of the time to upload or download the files. I then found that with further work on the software I was able to get EIGHT serial ports "on line" and connect to EIGHT different computers in EIGHT different locations. I then found that I was able to combine 2, 4 or all 8 modems to act as one. OR I could have FOUR sets of 2 modems acting as one or TWO sets of FOUR modems acting as one reducing the amount of time for uploading and downloading files without any of the connections dropping. We were about to implement this to production when our bank FINALLY bought leased lines to each of our locations and that part of what I was doing wasn't needed anymore. Note that without the leased lines this would have been needed because the amount of business that we were having was increasing quickly and we needed "some way" to be able to transfer data in both directions for 13 different sites to be able to keep doing our business and then figuring out from there what to do. But the plan was to have multiple OS/2 computers using 8 modems each with at least 4 acting as one for most but with one location having 8 modems acting as one in order to get all the data uploaded and downloaded during the night so that backups could be done and then the transfer of data done in both directions before people started work at 8 am. That was a VERY exciting time which went for naught but still both my boss and I learned a LOT and we had only been using OS/2 for a couple of years at that point.
It's sad to see how few people were there in the conference room for this video. If it had been in Seattle I definitely would have wanted to go to Warpstock. But it is unlikely that I will travel halfway across the country to spend most of my day time in Warpstock with my wife at home or with me wherever and her not being interested in OS/2 and so she would be by herself which would not make her happy. If I could use some program to video conference in Warpstock I would most likely be interested in that and I think more OS/2 users would be able to join Warpstock that way than physically paying for plane tickets and hotel/motel rooms if you aren't close enough to home to be able to drive there and back every day.
A cat has 9 lives. A lion, however surpasses all feasible expectation; Blue Lion lives on!
It is good to see what Martin actually looks like.
the video and the audio is out of sync with this youtube video
hoping for more hardware and driver support coming soon; also we need a default camera drivers and support for 64bit application for modern computers.
Watching this in May of 2024 "What's the future of Hobbes" LOL. Thankfully the clone is up and ticking.
Responding in October of 2024. Hobbes clone was up and running in March of 2024. It is now called HobbesArchive as that is as close of a domain name that could be obtained to the original archive name.
@@nathanwoodruff9422 aye thank you for your hard work, been watching the Warp mailing list
I'm from 2024
"promo sm" 🙄
Good job young man, I enjoyed your presentation. Very informative.
For Intel Macs, Parallels works well with sound and the system clock if you run it as "Windows 3.1". Runn ing as "OS/2" would not allow the clock to run properly, it was always several hours ahead, and setting the time zone would always revert. Unfortunately, with Parallels there's no host integration (they have an ancient OS/2 integration package but it no longer works). VirtualBox on Mac ran so slowly it was basically useless (and this on a high-end Intel Mac Pro). VMWare Fusion (workstation not available for Macs) hangs during install at the logo and I couldn't figure out how to get past it.
2003?
Oops
I am on an android tablet with the Magic DosBox free app installed from google and for programming tiny DOS executable it works fine. But i am not a DOS gamer.
As a member of one of the OS/2 development teams and a MMPM/2 developer....I'm proud to see that this many years later.... OS/2 LIVES!!!
Not only lives it works really well
I bought both os/2 poker and os/2 blackjack. They are awesome
Currently, it doesn't seem like a good thing to install ArcaOS directly on a hard drive partition. ArcaOS is a 32-bit system and will not use the full processing power of a 64-bit processor. It works well on virtual machines like virtualbox. Once installed, we are faced with a lack of software for common things like editing texts with UTF8 encoding.
Sir if can organise a complete training session on hands. Thank you.
Thanks for changing to open-source software and free for use. God bless you.
0:59 lol keep up the funny stuff
I wish I could've been there. Thanks for posting and for keeping OS/2 alive and relevant.
Oh, and I forgot the important bit. As a US resident or citizen I get to reduce my income by any donation I make for tax purposes. So the federal and state governments return part of my donation.
Hello from Daniel Carroll. I have regularly donated to Hobbes. New Mexico State University sends me regular info assuming I am an alumnus and they would like to keep me donating. :)
Did I hear someone say they were using OS/2 for personal finance??? That wouldn't happen to be QnE would it???
Don't forget your link in case someone wants to try it: www.os2developer.com/QnE/
Hello, is it possible to import applications along with their licence from WARP 4.52 TO arca OS? Or can I like upgrade this directly?
Hi. As far as I know there is no tool to upgrade from Warp 4.52 to ArcaOS. You will need to backup all your applications from OS/2 Warp, install ArcaOS and later copy your applications to the new system.
As of 2022, ArcaOS is still being worked on.
Yes. ArcaOS 5.1 is going to be released soon.
I had downloaded it and gave it a try. I can't find where I downloaded it or the disc I created. I am looking for the disc and the file.
I will be trying ArcaOS from Arca Noea on a computer soon. I have tried OS/2 Warp from IBM and eComStaion in the past.
I had it on a small older laptop and it worked great; mostly since it was an older laptop. I tried it on another laptop but didn't work but I was told a solution is being worked on. I lost my download of it but looking to see where it is.
Excellent presentation! I always look forward to watching David's presentations when he is a speaker for Warpstock!
This is the most ridiculous video on RUclips.
Focal Fosa is Ubuntu not Fedora
Donations for a product that is not free, is not it a little weird? hope not to hurts feelings. Money ran out as fast as people migrated to another OSs.
ArcaOS is not free, but BitWise project (Browser, libraries, etc) are all open source. So, you are saying something like that you will not donate to GIMP because it runs on Windows.
It runs Doom! Say no more.
wow 12 hours to build
Listen, David ... your expressions like - USBaudio is not worth the effort it's NONSENSE! If ArcaOS needs new users and a market, you need to look where It has advantages over those who look more beautiful and functional. it's difficult, but possible. And I and a team of enthusiasts found one of the great uses of ArcaOS. We in Russia offer this OS to those who listen to music, and they buy it on your site, because it sounds better than finished products Aurender W10 or Auralic G2 (check the price in Google). And these advantages are shown on very inexpensive hardware. Go after the consumer, look for the advantages of your product. Ask Dmitry Kuminov, we invited him, he was shocked by the comparison of sound sources on ArcaOS and other expensive products. There are many other examples where this operating system has replaced Hi-END solutions for tens of thousands of dollars in systems for hundreds of thousands of dollars. David... Continue to cut the branch you are sitting on, you are very good at it.
thanks David.
pm monopoly looks like it will be great!

Will there be a beta release for the general public for the DTAudio update? I've been looking for this coming for awhile.
just donated for qt5 and became a patreon.
GNU Emacs 27.1 Slackware 14.2 x86_64 (post 14.2 -current)
Love those OS/2 stories. Keep it up guys! ;)
Thank you, it's an interesting talk! Currently exploring ArcaOS as an alternative.
When I can use 64bit OS/2 warp?
when they rewrite the kernel in 64bits. this is not an open source project. 😞
Sad Very Sad
