Fiction builds empathy. It encourages us to be curious about what others are experiencing. These “self help” books like 48 laws only teach us to prioritize our own experiences. It scares me that more folks aren’t encouraging fiction as a starting ground to building empathy in boys.

And people get so angry when we say we need more books for young Black books written by Black men that center them.

I’ve seen Black Boys read plenty of manga and graphic novels! But, I see what you mean about these copy and paste ass books and them being completely untailored to our existences.

I've been looking to read more non-fiction, so it's fascinating to know your selections!

A Love Song for Ricki Wilde lives rent free in my head!!!! I loved this book so much. I’m gonna reread it for sure. And I agree, she definitely can give us some longer books and I wouldn’t be upset about it.

And see, that’s why I will not press play on that movie and watch it for real. The Perfect Find. I just know i need to read the book first. lol!!!

I enjoyed the Tia Williams book (Love Song..), but I agree the ending was predictable and the ending felt rushed. I did appreciate the magical realism and the historical references.

My first time around, I didn't like 7 Days in June. It's definitely an acquire taste in my opinion. After my second read, I liked it better. I think the book needs a trigger warning tbh. I loved a Love Song for Ricki Wilde.

Lol, you don't have to recommend that people read Lovecraft. He's one of the most famous authors of American literature as it is.

I so understand what you’re saying about Jasmine G! I read By The Book and the entire Wedding Date series. Reading her series in order helps just a tad cause you make cross connections between characters and storylines: basically her books a easy, quick “let me get out this reading slump” books for me

Yay! I’m so happy I discovered your channel today yet I must admit I’m a little made the algorithm didn’t bring you my way sooner. I truly enjoy Tia Williams’s wit, humor, and writing.

Little rot was wild! I didn’t know if I wanted to cry or laugh or eat popcorn! 🍿 😢😂 In the end it made me feel very sad for queer people living in the communities with a severe problem of homophobia 😢

I agree about Jasmine Guillory. It took so long for me to get through By The Book. I feel like she is a good author but she doesn’t grab my attention and hold on.
