Mickey Mantle Interview by Bob Costas

Books can't come close to matching the depth of this touching and revealing interview of Mickey Mantle by Bob Costas. Mickey discusses why he drank, when it became a problem and why he checked himself into the Betty Ford Clinic and so much more about his inner self. This is a "must see" for any fan of "The Mick"!
Man I never knew this about Mickey Mantle obviously I’m not a baseball legend but hearing his story brings tears to my eyes because I’ve had some the same struggles as him wow
No one compares to Mickey. The very best.
what a rude comment- i always thought there was a lot of sadness about you- dude, every male member of his family had died before the age of 40 from cancer, plus he played every day for 18 years with intense pain in both legs
The part where Costas said “you’re the guy who stood in the shadow of the monuments at Yankee Stadium” was special.
Growing up in the 50's and 60's Mickey was a baseball icon to me. My heart feels for him since I lost my son Derek at the age of 24. A man has his limits and losing a child is beyond comprehension. God bless you Mickey. You will always be a hero to me.
Wow. I cannot imagine today’s sycophantic sports “reporters” conducting such an interview with Tiger, LaBron, or Tom Brady. This is not what I expected.
I hope that Mickey made up with his wife and left the other lady.
He probably had cancer ravaging his body at this time. But still he honored all his commitments.
Back in 1962 in Florida watching spring training with my dad I was a kid asking for autographs as the players arrived for a game. Got Elston Howard and Yogi Berra. Asked Mr. Mantle for his and he ignored me. Never forgot that.

This is the most honest interview ever.Words don't explain everything but he meant what he said.
Mickey was a heck of a iconic person.
You never let us baseball fans down. You gave us much joy in the way you played the game.
So interesting to hear Mickey acknowledge feelings, thoughts, dreams that he can perceive are unusual but can't quite explain or come fully to grips with.
One of the people he let down was Casey Stengel, who didn’t hide the fact that he felt Mickey should have had a much greater career, but had squandered it with his irresponsible lifestyle.
Two of the best our game will see or hear!
Such an honest, vulnerable interview. It must've been hard for Mick, but he did alright. Cheers to Bob Costas, too, for asking the tough questions.
What a great interview
Wow man , what a true human hero
Mantle is an icon and a legend and a genuine classy guy. Probably why he didn't knock Costas out, because he had class.
Bob Costas has an annoying voice and is extremely arrogant.
Drunk.
I saw him the 1st game I ever went to at Yankee Stadium. It was 1959. Whitey Ford was pitching. There were a number of future Hall of Famers playing that day.
Great job
Mickey is a dunker ya know
What an incredibly sad interview.
He turned out allright, allright.
Mantle was my dad's favorite player and Jeter was mine they are the reason I wear 27 I put the 2 and the 7 together for my old man RIP mick
He turned out wall right. I was named Mickey.
When Billy was mentioned, you can see the emotion just come straight up. I have four kids, two sons, I felt for him
Ive never seen mickey play , Hes my favourite player of all time
At 70 years old I still get a sense of awe when I hear the name Mickey Mantle. It rings in my mind like music and echoes “number 7” He was a hero and larger than life when I was a kid. In Little League kids fought for number 7 uniform. Watching this is sad but shows what a good man he is. And to admit his shortcomings is honorable. Thanks Mic for the great childhood memories. And thanks for showing me to face my shortcomings as a man.
Mickey- RIP. Your heart softened and you turned out alright.
Too bad Bob is a leftist. Good interviewer. Hockey lover. Bad politics. He forgets.
I knew Mickey from the Harbor Club in Greensboro GA in 1991. His friend, a girl named Greer, took polo lessons from the Director of polo when was an employee of the hard knox school polo. I’ll never forget when Maybe Ortiz said we’re going to be joined by an associate of Mickey Mantles at our scrimmage. He had a house there and we would see him after Saturday night arena polo. He would sit in the same spot and drink scotch and soda alone every time. One night after a match, and we were forced to wear our stupid uniforms, and chat with the patrons, I had four horses in the stall after playing a match because I could not afford a groom and was anxious to get them cooled down. I was forced to ignore those horses and hang out in the bar and talk with people that I did not want to talk with while my horses were waiting for me to come take care of them. I say my horses, but these were not my horses three of them belong to a doctor from Augusta, who had me play them and keep them ready for him to play, I had one horse named Leo. He was a Doc Bar line reigning horse, who was a bad ass. This was the night before Father’s Day and I didn’t really have anything to give my dad the next day. My father played in the Durham leagues and stated that Mickey Mantle was his very favorite baseball player so I had the bright idea I thought I would go back to my grooms quarters, retrieve a piece of artwork that I did with the name, Bob, my dad‘s name and also mine, artfully decorated on a green piece of card stock. I had heard the stories about how we weren’t supposed to talk with Mickey and how he had gotten really upset with some folks that had intruded upon him in the past, I always respected that. However, it was Father’s Day the next day and I was going to get his autograph and so I walked over and asked him if I could have a seat next to him he said sure.son. I told him that he was always my father‘s favorite player, even though he wasn’t a pitcher. He chucked. i’m sitting there in Polo Whites next to Mickey Mantle. He says, thank you so much for teaching, my friend how to play polo. He used to sit in the stands by himself and watch our scrimmages which was already surreal. I am quite sure he did not recognize me as a person, but I had that stupid looking uniform on so he knew that I was one of those folks that he had watched scrimmage with his friend who we were helping to learn the game. I said Mr. Mantle I have this Piece of artwork that I did with my dad’s name on it and I think it would be wonderful if I could give him this art with your autograph on it. He said sure son I’ll be glad to. This art had a 3 inch tall ornamented BOB on it he says what’s his name I said his name is Bob. He looks down at the art and looks up at me and says sorry about that and he signed it. He asked me if I wanted a baseball card with his signature on it for myself, and I said yes sir I do and thank you very much Mr. mantle. He handed it to me and put his arm on my back and said call me Mick. I will never forget that moment as long as I live, anybody who doubts it, feel free to email me privately and I will show you a photo of the art with his signature on it. It was the mean Green moment when Joe Green tossed that kid his jersey in that Coca-Cola commercial. I said ok thanks Mick. So kind. As an aside this interview happened two months after the above account.
Never watched the man play outside of highlights, and I hate the Yankees. Mickwy Mantle is still my favourite ball player of all time.
Bought a mantle card for $.17 and sold it for $135 a week later
I hope that little boy in the airport forgives Mickey. He’s truly sorry😢
He died one year later
Hes so introspective and understanding
❤️❤️Mickey❤️❤️
A profound interview, really. A lot of reconciliation for Mr. Mantle in his latter years, things to comb through, sort and seek to understand. His eyes, his facial expression and pauses reveal such pain.
1995, 2 8 yrs since #7s passing. I can, and will Always hear Bob Shepard announcing..'Now batting for the Yankees..# 7.. Mickey Mantle..Cf, # 7!!
Micky said if im a role model dont be like me ? He was humble at the end.
Proves he is human like the rest of us. It’s tough to see his pain.
I’ve watched this a few times over the years and it brings tears to my eyes. I was born a Mickey Mantle fan and saw him play a few times in his final years, worshipped him, kept his baseball cards, met him in person during his HOF induction and he DID sign for me. Always felt close to him. Bob Costas per usual nails the interview, going deeper and more personal than most interviews for which I assume and hope that he reviewed with the Mick prior to the cameras coming on. He was indeed special. Even if he didn’t realize how special.
Mickey Mantle. I believe they also tell you you can’t go back so don’t look back. Forge ahead with a new and better mind set and decide to look to help others. It is one of the best ways to recover. Always move forward.
He turned out all right
Heartbreaking when he starts talking about his kids, I'm sure he had so much regret
