La Herradura - a Picturesque Anchorage on the Costa del Sol ☀️ Spain 🇪🇸

The anchorage of La Herradura allows a picturesque setting for a few days of relaxation for the wretched sailors in the Costa del Sol ☀️. It’s not as easy sailing ⛵️ here as we thought. Hiding from strong winds on the nose all summer gets a bit tiring…

As we left the pontoon we had to berth the boat at the marina office to pay the last bills. As we approached the concrete pontoon we hit it and that bent the anchor pin.
Leaving La Linea After 8 Months
Просмотров 405 месяцев назад
We had our boat in La Linea for 8 months as they offered the best winter deal on the Costa del Sol. It wasn’t exactly a sunny coast that as we found out. La Linea is the meeting point of all winds, one of the windiest places in Spain if not the windiest. Storm after storm after storm in the past 8 months and particularly in April . It was exhausting.

Welding and Installing a Solar Panel on a Sailboat

Alboy in action welding the fittings of the solar panel installation. This is the davits, wind generator and solar panel mount we made, the 316 stainless was under £700, and we did the work ourselves. A friend in Greenock “Jake” dod the vertical as it was joining a 30mm tube, to a 50mm tube, Leena’s dad did some of the welding, and I did some, I don’t know how much it would have cost to get som...
Welding 1.5mm Stainless Steel Burned Hole After Hole in the Solar Panel Frame

In Gibraltar we could only get 1.5 mm thick 30 by 30 316 stainless, I had brought the two shorter parts from the UK, the had a 2mm wall thickness, which was really as thin as you can go with arc welding, so trying to weld 2mm onto 1.5 mm, was not without its challenges, though, eventually, we managed it. TIG welding would have done a much better job, perhaps even MIG would have done better, but...
Welding 316 Stainless 1.5 mm onto 2 mm for the Solar Panel Frame

We were making a frame for the solar panel, some of the 30 by 30 box section 316 stainless, I brought from the UK it had a 2mm wall thickness, which is really the thinnest I can weld with arc welding, we needed more stainless steel, and all we could get in Gibraltar, had 1.5mm wall thickness, which caused problems with welding it. TIG welding would have done a much better job.

Menace Seago Dinghy Greased Up Again in the Sun
At 2:06 I'm afraid that is the reason they're attacking boats.. New scalar waves mind control weapons that communicate with submarines and they are pissed off!..
Good point! I would be much angrier than them if I lived in that dirty water everywhere. They are so unfortunate.
At first I thought he was holding a hand grenade and figured that would really make their ears ring. But then I heard his singing.
WOW this would definitely kill you. Glad i never did this and stuck to my flawless and serious plan. SMH
What you want is a few 12v subwoofers the ones with the amps like chavs have in the boot of there cars 3000w of pure bass should do it.
Play The Hobbit song by Leonard Nimoy AKA Spock
Well that worked flawlessly, no orca in miles and miles!
Does anybody know if it works.
Recently we encountered 3 orcas. They passed by without any interest in us. They looked like they were late for a meeting. So we didn’t get a chance to sing to them 😄🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have seen documentaries about the very large waves...how do you handle that?
Good question. During the summer the area is almost flat. The big waves 🌊 come only in certain months of the year. The marina people told us but I forgot. We get professional weather and sea forecast so we knew that we’d be on a flat sea there.
A very unfriendly piece of coastline. Give me Benalmadena up to Cabo Negro. After that, plain misery.
Yes we had a very tough time 😢
Garrucha is my base port, It's absolutelly disgusting, the dust is from de bulk carriers that load plaster. This is our daily basis. I understand the angry but with lots of water it gets clean. Absolutelly I'm thinking on going to another marina. I hope you are enjoying the wonderful coast we have.
Hi Elliot, thank you for your support, yes we loved Águilas, didn’t go to Mazaron but our friends say it’s a great place as well. I guess Mazaron is your next marina for your boat?
Your 80 year old dad looks like he’s in his sixties and very healthy/ active for his age.
Thank you 🙏🏼 he doesn’t smoke but enjoys drinking beer 🍺 and wine 🍷😄😄😄
I see no sails.
Wind was on the stern, just used Genoa from departure point, and got it down before we made our approaches to the marina, we had been slowly reefing in the Genoa since we set sail,
🤣
Im sorry to say, you could do with some maritime inclined lessons...everything was wrong, including your understanding of climate change and local varainces in weather..anchoring techqnique ..and lack of situatiiional awareness needs work...good luck!
Maritime inclined lessons lol, I think my 25 years in the merchant navy, and all the courses they sent me on, were enough maritime inclined lessons.
A gun
Can go to prison for that. It’s illegal to harm the orcas even if your life is in danger. This is Europe not US.
i sailed up Laoch Long in my Speedos and had lunch on a mooring off Ardentinney Hotel yesterday sailed back with oileys and woolly bunnet !! See you in the Ionian next month Al
Been wearing t shirt and shorts nearly all the time, sailed 50 miles west to almost Gibraltar, it got cold, by 10pm, was wearing joggies a jersey, and a jacket, yet fifty miles up road, t shirt and shorts.
Which brand solar controller did you have and buy?
Had a Spark MPPT solar controller, think it cost a hundred, was 25 amp, the new one is, victron energy 25 amp duo. Got that for £75 in Gibraltar, in shepherds chandlery, I think it was a loose connection to solar panel that blew charger.
I have been sailing/ living in Spain since 2012. Never ever any problem..just now in Sweden sailing down a new boat ! Öppi Hispaaniakeelt , siis elu kergem !
The boat has been covered in dust from Sahara several times, every time we sail, we start off with good wind, then it either changes direction or dies, the forecasts are very inaccurate, we have even sailed in a west wind, with forecast telling us it’s east, anchorages are few and far between, marinas ere expensive, and have poor facilities, west of Gibraltar, they are better, some marinas, have zero security, and Spanish climb on your boat to drink, we have had awful lightening storms, and seas that remind me of North Sea, but being stuck in places due to wind, is the worst thing, today left torravijaca for mar menor 14 miles sailed 7 then wind went on the nose, motoring other 7
❤❤I FEEL FOR YOU❤❤
Thank you for the support ❤️❤️❤️
Bloody foreigners
There are two harbors where you can always find a place if you communicate in advance and get detailed information from REEDS. I don't think that's Spain's problem, but rather poor preparation and planning. Sorry....
The problem is weather forecasts, we are using predict wind, and UK Met office, we plan an anchorage from chart, then wind shifts, and sea comes from different direction, and we have to run, and mostly, no where to run to, we got good anchorage at puerto Deportivo next to the inland sea, then got good anchorage at torraviaja. Which is a harbour, and protects from all sides, but most, only protect in certain winds, plus we got covered in dust from Sahara desert in aguilias as did the cars, the street, I had it in my mouth, then the electrical storms, sailing with a chain from the mast in the water, weird no thunder, just loads of lightening.
@@Colonia.4711 they were decent until we got past Gibraltar, the ones on Atlantic coast Spain and Portugal, were quite decent, and a lot cheaper than me, we got one for 12 euros a night, up the river from sancti petri no showers, no toilets, but free water.

Not sure if that would preoccupy them
I had a silly idea but was wondering if you had any beach toys or inflatable beach balls and throw them out there.
Leena has the idea of dumping a bottle of bleach on their heads, but I don’t really go with that, although, I understand whales and dolphins don’t drink water, but it could have bad effect on them, so probably not good idea.
@@atlantical1 ya I don’t think bleach is a good idea. I don’t want to hurt them. That’s why floating beach toys or big inflatable beach balls might distract them from the sailboats. Just a thought. Not sure if it would even work but if I can help I would love to.
what about Dog Barking or Orca Singing Sound
😀😀😀
Not only the wales, also I would not join this concert. :-D
😂😂😂
Nice job Al !! Saw a Westerley Discus for sale up here in Scotland really taken to them since i sailed with you £25000 1980 out my budget unfortunately !!
That’s too much . We’re in the peak of inflation. In 2026 that same boat will be 9k.
That’s expensive, mine was surveyed at 18k I paid 9 during Covid when no one was buying. I don’t believe it’s worth more than 18k.
To me it’s worth a million

Can’t understand what you mean?
I am going to try that with some Hobart 3/32 308L-16 rods
I used 316L-17 2.5 by 350. I keep them on the boat in a waterproof tube. Excellent rods, easy to use, slag comes off easy, they burn at very low amps, but expensive but excellent
@@atlantical1 thanks
pmsl at the bare, split cable
Yea, it’s really nice small light investor welder, but the cables are shit, made from really thin strands of copper, but, it was cheap, 65 pounds and so light compared to traditional welders.
I thought SS had to be tig welded?
No it can easily be stick welded, with a 316 rod, that steel was supposed to be 2mm wall thickness, but we ended up with two short pieces 2mm wall thickness, and on long piece 1.5 which made things difficult.
Tig welding on that thickness, would have done a far superior job.
One slip and no sailing this year Al !!!!
😂😂😂
Yes, it’s no where near ideal, but couldn’t find anywhere else to work,
You scared the killer whales into the Indian Ocean.
Yeah 🙌⛵️
You got pets……I mean pests. I don’t think I could trust anything that comes out of that locker
Very difficult to find places for food on the boat. That locker is perfectly dry. That’s why we chose it. And they still bred there…
Ah God what a nightmare
The Orcas's must be 'Wired for Sound'......😂
Nice to see and hear Cliff Richard sing again, though it was a Rod Steward song he chose. I really thought that he was living somewhere ashore abusing some indigenous children on Virgin Islands.
😂 im in stiches 😂
I think that's why they may be attacking your boat. The don't want to hurt you, they just don't want you to talk on the PA or sing. It's a known fact that they like the Roger Whittiker song, The last Farewell. Or anything by Christopher Cross. Thank you. -The Orca
Looking great Leena
I've watched a ton of videos of boats going down, I was ready to sell my boat.. thanks.

How about the black one with the white legs?

😂😂😂 That’s me 😀😀😀 I’m alive and well 😀😀😀
I know i have been in Spain since 2012. Sometimes the ropes have not been used a long time , terrible and your boat gets shitty !
Yeah a real nuisance. Takes an hour to wash down the boat after that and when you are tired after a day’s sailing ⛵️ it ruins the evening… I hate it…
It is a rope that joins the dock with a large chain submerged in the middle of the anchorage, to tie the stern or the bow, His name is "el muerto". And, yes, it is usually very dirty
Very useful to share the name thank you 🙌
what are you eating there anyway? It does look like cat food :-) no offence meant
Lol 😂 I’m not offended at all. I have been neglecting myself as I’m currently working 20 hours a day and sleeping bad because we are having very strong winds here in Spain and during the night it gets very dramatic 😔. Eating corn beef from England which is boat reserve for sailing but I don’t have time to do shopping 🙌. Hope you are having a nicer weather where you are? I don’t want to spend another winter here. As bad as British weather…
Brilliant, really shows some young people desperate for adventure
They needed oars to get to the anchorage to ask the boats there for a lift to the Canaries. I gave them our oars. Couldn’t believe the amount of boats at anchor in that bad weather 😂😂😂
🤣😂that should do the trick 😂not a note in his head 😂😅 great idea , you should be safe enough 👍🤣
Thank you for your support David, much appreciated 🙌⛵️👍
