    Color paper is not impossible to find. It is just sold in rolls. It is much cheaper per picture than any of the black & white papers in the market. Also, chemistry is widely available, and is not overly expensive. You just shouldn´t buy small kits for home use, as these are overpriced. You end paying 10-20 times more with 1 liter RA-4 kits compared to chemistry intended for minilabs. "It is all digital now" - No, it isn´t. There is nothing preventing from printing color if you just want to do it.

    I use Schneider, El Nikkor. and Fujinon enlarging lenses but I use them with a bellows with a 2 way focusing rail for macro photography. It is a Spiratone bellows and rail, if that tells you anything about how long I have been doing that! I couldn't afford the Nikon bellows at the time and the Spiratone has worked just fine.

    I found it interesting that you said the old glass wasn’t as good as the new and I respect your experience and knowledge, however this isn’t the same in Camera lenses, or should I say it’s not a rule of thumb, yes it depends on what you are trying to achieve in the photograph and again I suppose it’s what look you are going for in the print or darkroom. Very interesting though!

    His discussion of the 50mm El-Nikkor lenses is lacking some info and wrong in other respects. The 50mm 2.8 is a 6 element lens; the 50mm 4.0 is a 4 element lens, and its performance in much inferior to the 2.8. The 50mm 4.0 was made along with a 4 element 75mm to target a low priced market, selling for about half their 6 element alternatives. His error is the optimum aperture for using the 50mm 2.8. It is optimum about half way between 4.0 and 5.6. Smaller apertures reduce performance progressively. Everyone will have their favorite line of enlarging lenses. While I used El0Nikkors from 50mm to 135mm for decades, I found my particular copy of the 80mm very disappointing. About 15 years ago I replaced it with a 90mm Fujinon, which is spectacular with color enlargements. Thereafter, I added a range of Fujinon-EX models, and they have displaced my Nikkors. One problem using Fujinon lenses is that Fuji never marketed them strongly, and there are very few available in the used market.

It used to be Falcon, then I think Paterson, but now I just don't know. By the way i wish you had mentioned the importance of a clean, dust-free area when applying the no-scratch. His Leitz V35 enlarger - I once came within a moment of buying one, and I'm now glad I missed it. As an autofocus system, if the prior owner has messed with the focus setting or changed the lens, you are likely to have to have the thing re calibrated. However, it biggest problem is that it uses a bulb which hasn't been available for years - very hard to find a bulb for it. Leitz is known for its camera lenses, but its Focotar enlarger lenses are nothing special. (Back in the 80s, a major magazine did an article testing all of the major enlarger lenses of the day. The Focotar failed to meet acceptable performance - they bought a second lens to test - similar problems.) If you want an enlarger like a Durst, buy a Durst.

    • @randallstewart1224
      @randallstewart1224 Год назад

      @@atribecalledfilm Around 1976, I bought my first enlarger, a Durst M601 (35mm and 6x6). I later added a dichroic color head. In 1980, after installing a permanent darkroom in my new house, I bought a Durst M800 with dichroic color head, after which I slowly accumulated nearly all of its accessories, and spare parts. It one shortcoming for me was a somewhat course focusing system. I had a machinist manufacture a new focus drive pawl to replace the simple Durst knob with a two speed planetary drive knob made as an accessory by LPL/Saunders for its high-end enlargers - perfection. Still use it today, because I cannot do better. I used El-Nikkor lenses for years, but never liked my 80mm. I tried the best series of Fujinon lenses to do medium format. I liked it so much that I bought the same series for 35mm, 645, and 6x7 formats. If I could get enough back to make it worth my trouble, I'd liquidate all the El-Nikkors except the 40mm 2.8, a wicked lens if you need to make a truly large print from 35mm format. As I stand now, I probably have enough spares and parts to assemble at least three M880/M700 Dursts, including one fitted with an Ilford B&W variable contrast head.

    • @randallstewart1224
      @randallstewart1224 6 месяцев назад

      @@atribecalledfilm My first new enlarger was a Durst M601 in 1975, later upgraded with a color head. In 1980, I replaced that with a Durst M800 with color head. Several years later, I had a machinist make a modified focus drive shaft for it to allow mounting of a Saunders two-speed focus drive made as an accessory for their LPL enlargers. This made fine focusing of big enlargements easier. Over the following decade, I acquired almost every accessory for the M800, and it remains today the most perfect 35mm/medium format enlarger I've ever used. It will handle subminiture to 6x9cm with glass or glassless film carriers. Condenser, diffusion, cold light, or dichroic color headlight sources. Its only shortcoming is common to a number of Durst enlarger models of that vintage. The head is raised and lowered on a geared column. The drive gear is steel, but the track (or rack) is nylon. After some years, the nylon hardened, and if you thrash the head adjustment too much, you can break teeth off the rack, causing the raising and lowering to start skipping. Durst used to sell replacement track parts, but that's long gone. A few years ago, some enterprising fellow was selling the same track part which he 3-D printed. (When I first acquired my M800, it suffered this problem. I acquired a half dozen track parts to repair it, and I still have several stored away. Most folks with this problem are just screwed.)

    The 80 mm is best for 6 x 6 , 6 x 4.5 and 4 x 4 nnegatives For 6 x 7 and 6 x 8 the 90 mm enlarger lens suits best. A 105 mm lens is best for 6 x 9 , 6 x 8 and 6 x 7 negaatives. For 90 x 120 mm and 4 x 5 inch a 150 mm well be better than a 135 mm lens. APO lenses are for colour printing. Do not forge the Betavaron lens. A lot of 6 x 6 photographers use the Planar 80 mm as a enlarger lens

    thanks for the video what i would like to know when doing 3d photography do you focus on the same point or are both cameras just facing parallel to infinity

    • @TedwardsTube
      @TedwardsTube 11 месяцев назад

      It is always important that both cameras face forward, not pin inwardly to a point. The reason is, the parallax in both the foreground and background need to be reasonable for the eyes to fuse. In real life, yes, we do pin our eyes in and look at a specific point, and only that point is in focus, everything else is out of focus, and that’s fine. But in 3D photography you never know where the viewer will try to look. Usually the viewer will allow their eyes to freely roam around at various things at various depths in the z axis, so everything in the image should be not only in focus, but should be comfortable to fuse. If you pin the two cameras in to a point on the main foreground subject the backgrounds will be so dramatically different they will be terribly uncomfortable if not painful to view in 3D, as the eyes try to fuse it and cannot. Clear as mud? :-) Another thing that should be mentioned is the two cameras, ideally, should be as close together as possible, or more specifically, the two lenses should be separated by about the same distance as the average human interocular distance (2.5 inches / 65 mm or so). In the video, his two lenses are about twice as far apart as they should be. That’s fine for shooting long distances, but for shooting subjects anywhere from 3 to 15 feet, he’s going to end up with 3D photos in which the subjects look miniaturized to about half their normal scale. The converse is also true - If the two lenses are too close together, subject will appear larger than normal when viewed in 3D.

    There's a more accurate technique than your way, but the change is so small, you won't do it. For those who would like to spot more effectively, simply rotate the print so that the top of the image is closest to you. All of a sudden your brain stops trying to find a familiar image,and you can see all the problems you may have, including all the white spots that you never saw before. It's embarrassing to hang a show of "spotted " prints, only to see that the prints are still littered with spots - even one white spot in the wrong place can ruin the effectiveness of your print.

      There are many different ways twinned cameras can be mounted when shooting 3D, such as on slide bars, or on z-bars (where one camera is upside down, and the other is right side up). There are several other methods too. Sometimes the cameras used will limit your options. I recommend you seek out George Themelis, aka Dr. T.

  • @davidjenkins8009
    @davidjenkins8009 3 года назад

    The flat field is not the problem using enlarger lenses for photography, the issue is the general design. Normal camera lenses are optimized for best performance at great distances, whereas enlarger lenses for rather obvious reasons are optimized for quite short distances. Enlarger lenses can be used very effectively in close-up photography. As far as quality goes, the real bargain is the Durst Neonon. They were made by Pentax for Durst, who at the time Durst said they could not find enlarger lenses of high enough quality to fit their enlargers. Photo Technique magazine did a large enlarger lens test and they came out equal top with the famous Schneider Componon S lens. Another worthy mention is the Minolta CE Rokkor lens. Basically, any of the six-element lenses perform really well. The extra quality of apochromatic lenses will show on really large enlargements but there are many other things that will affect the quality of your enlargement, starting with the taking lens. One cheap hack is the Paterson focus finder which I have used for many years, a wonderful piece of kit. Well, I have finished my rant. I rather did enjoy the video and well done for helping keep darkroom work alive. More, please!

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 года назад

      The light source of the enlarger does not govern whether it can make B&W or color prints. Either can do both. However, some enlargers are equipped to do color more conveniently. For example, to do color, an enlarger needs some kind of color modification head to change the color of the light. This could be by color filters built into the unit or by adding external filters to the light path.

    Thanks for hosting this channel. I've added comments in various places, based on 50 years of amateur darkroom experience. I still have a dedicated darkroom, and multiple enlargers, including a mid-30s vintage Kodak Precision B, with every available holder for the older negative formats, to a Durst 606 medium & 35 mm format, to several Focomats, two Leitz V35s to medium and large format Beselers, which I've either purchased or been at the right time and place to be given these great enlargers. The old Leica Focomats still produce excellent photographs, if you take the time to set them up correctly, adjust the autofocus, use a good clean lens, and for use with multi-contrast papers, learn how to put the filters above the condenser instead of between the lens and the paper. Having the correct negative carriers helps get great results.

  • @Anonymous-it5jw

    You were using 91% isopropyl alcohol, if I heard you correctly, which is 9% water. Try using 99% rubbing alcohol to remove the nose oil or the Edwal No Scratch - virtually no water at all in the bottle, but it will absorb moisture from the air if the bottle is left uncapped. Retouching tip for final prints: Turn the picture 180 degrees so that you are looking at the image upside down. Your brain will ignore the image in the picture and any dust spots, remnants of scratches, or other defects will jump out at you, so you can fix them quickly.

  • @Anonymous-it5jw
    @Anonymous-it5jw 3 года назад

    Did you say that the Leitz V35 enlarger was actually made by Durst? If so, no evidence of that on my V35s.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 года назад

      So, you were expecting a plate which says, "We farmed this out to Durst. If you want a better enlarger for half the price, get a Durst." I'm sure Leitz put their dead hand on the design, which is why folks develop trouble with the autofocus, and it used to cost a fortune to replace a bulb. Now you can't replace the bulb. If you want a 35mm (only) autofocus enlarger which will work trouble free, stalk ebay for the illusive Durst A-300, but make sure it has its original lens. Durst factory cut the autofocus cam to fit each of the selected Nikkor 50mm 2.8 lenses it mounted. You can mount other lenses, but it's nice to have that precision. (Each key part has a serial number; there is a plate on the base which lists those numbers. Accept no substitutes.)
