Astra J / Mk6 Handbrake / Parking Brake Adjustment. Vauxhall/Opel Astra J Mk6 2013
Very easy job. The automatic adjustment ratchet mechanism sometimes doesn't work. I describe briefly, the steps you'll need to take for adjustment.
Note that this is a manual handbrake estate version of the Astra
I did this video after replacing both handbrake cables. Too busy to make a video for that as it involves lifting the rear part of the carpet, so any questions about that just ask and I'll describe the procedure.
Hope this is useful. Editing videos through YT was once easy. Now I only seem able to upload the 'raw' footage and can't edit it.

Vauxhall/Opel Astra J (Mk6) Handbrake Adjustment (Spoiler - it's easy!)
Просмотров 33 тыс.3 года назад
PLEASE SEE MY NEW VIDEO ON THIS - IT'S FAR MORE INFORMATIVE Very rough video showing how to adjust the "self- adjusting" mechanism on a Vauxhall/Opel Astra J 2013. Sorry about the camera work - one handed and in a difficult place to record. Hope it gives people some insight into how to carry out this simple task. This seems to be a common problem. There's no difficulty here, you've just got to ...
Thank you so much . Brilliant video
Found this very useful...just had the unfortunate pleasure of replacing handbrake cables on one of these ..Google nightmare lol...trying to get adjustment off fo reconnect calipers was funishhhhjhh
Glad you found this useful! Best Wishes.
Have you got a link to the video has I think I need to swap my cable despite already adjusting it. Cheers
@@thomasedward9065 Hi, here is the link to my videos: www.youtube.com/@andyroid7339/videos I hope these are helpful. Best Wishes.
Thank you. You saved me a lot of head scratching. Easy job.
Thanks Zane, it's good to know that my vid has been useful.😃
Excellent. Saved me loads of grief. I put new cables in and this vid made me look as if I knew what I was doing😂😂
That's great news! Comments like this tell me that it was worth the time to make this video, knowing that I've helped out someone. Thanks.
Just did this about 20seconds ago,the other halve rolled her car into a brick wall was saying for ages her handbrake was slack now paying a fortune to get the back bumper sprayed new lamp etc this literally took me 15seconds to do thanks fella
sorry to hear about the wall incident but happy that you've sorted it now.
Opel really suck 😮
I have a 13 reg astra j 1.4 and the mechanism inside is different. I don't have the release tab
Ive adjusted mine just slightly too far, but couldn't see a way to release it slightly. I'll try pushing on the tag and see i that works.
Hi Kevin, you're correct - push firmly on the tag (but slowly and deliberately - one commentator said that he somehow broke off the tag, which I don't think is too easy to do) and the ratchet should release. You could also move the yoke to help. Once it's loose, just adjust up again.
My cable's is losse so will this work on my astra to solve this problem?
Tried "pushing" the tag and it broke off... surely theres another way to slacken it off..
You broke off the 'tag'! What are you? One of the X-Men?!
@@andyroid7339 i am indeed, my mutation is resounding stupidity 😂 the whole self adjusting mechanism had siezed.. it pulled both cables so tight that I had to cut them off. Result: had to get a new handbrake lever and both cables today lol
@@conordornan1228 Oh Conor! So sorry to hear that you've had to go so far to sort out the problem. Is everything OK now? I'm surprised the h/brake mech dad seized as it's well protected from water etc. (maybe someone spilt a drink down there?). At least you now know that your car shouldn't fail its MOT on h/brake cables for a long while.
@@andyroid7339 I was fuming, couldve saved a few quid if I just replaced the lever. Im pretty sure theres a dodgy history with my car, got from the dealership about 6 months now, driving out of the lot the dpf light came on and within a month the clutch needed done. They fixed the clutch but im currently saving for a new exhaust system because their "mechanic" is a con man. Couldnt even align the steering which I was asking for weeks. Claimed he cleaned out the dpf yet after 20 mins i got the same fault code on my obd reader.
@@conordornan1228 not sure how good your mech'ing skills are but it maybe worth looking in the plenum chamber - see how much gunk there is in there. I also paid around £120 for something called Terra clean. Some people knock it but I honestly noticed a huge difference. I always add some DPF cleaner, injector cleaner in the tank with every oil change (which I do myself every 10k miles). Let me know if you're considering Terra clean - I'll tell you a good tip. Hope things get better soon.
The one on the early Astra `J` that I am looking at is slightly different to this... I have found out there are couple of different adjusters on the Astra J. This is the one you can adjust but there is also one that you cannot.
Great video. Ive suffered for years with a loose handbrake on my astra but it was at the point where no matter how far up I pulled it it didnt seems locked in place. Watched this, went to car, took 3 mins and its now perfect. Thanks.
That's great news! So glad that this video has helped you.
Best video by far
Many thanks Dominic. It's not the best but I noticed that there wasn't much else out there to help so made this vid. Hope it was helpful.
Thanks. I need to replace the handbrake cables on my astra j. Do I need to remove the centre console?
Hi, in short, even though I've seen that you do in a Vx manual, no, you do not. Replace both cables - it's false economy to replace only one. Start by chocking the front wheels and releasing the h/brake, removing the rear of the console (as in video) and for some extra light you could flip up the h/brake gaiter cover. You will need to remove the rear seats (easy as they're designed to come out), lift the rear section of carpet as much as you can (this will involve partial removal of the panels under the door apertures - these just clip on so not too bad, just go easy so that they don't break). The carpet is lightly glued in places but easy to free up. Do this by pushing your hand under. You don't need to remove the front seats, just slide them forward. Once you've got up as much as you can (working toward the centre console, jam under 2 blocks of wood or something to give you some room, at the sides of the what used to be, the prop tunnel. Do all this first. Next, jack up the car (both sides in the air at the same time is easiest) and release both cables (note carefully the route they take, in and outside of the car, for the the routes of the new ones). Take a look at the cable h/brake end for reference and then release the cables from the h/brake end and as in the video, release the ratchet to make things easier for fitting. You'll need to feed the cables from the cabin outward (because of the grommets). I connected the caliper end first but if it's slack either end first should be OK. It is a bit fiddly at times but all possible. Once connected, the yoke balances itself. Just adjust the h/brake cable once everything is on. Any more qus - just ask. To comfort yourself, just take a look at what's involved removing the console!
@@andyroid7339 Jamming the wood really helped to make some room. Thanks for that tip and detailed explanation.
Thanks for that mate. Just done mine, cheers.
Great! So glad that this was useful.
Hi Andy thanks for showing this. What it doesn’t clearly show (no criticism as I wouldn’t have clue) is as u push on yoke and real ease handbrake, should hear self adjuster ratcheting a few clicks thereby tightening which isn’t that clear on sound? However saved me and daughter a few Bob thanks for your efforts
Hi Volt, glad to have been of some help. I'd just changed both h/brake cables and adjusted them before making the vid (but was concerned enough not to consider adjusting the h/brake as I made the video - h/brake cable change is a relatively easy job - just got to lift the rear carpet area and even then seeing what you're doing is difficult). To other viewers - any questions, just ask and I'll try to answer them.
All i can hear is u breathing hahaha
haha! that's my phone voice!
So watched this a few other vids didnt make sense. But if u search for chevy cruze E adjust handbrake its the same way. Take the back plastic off the center column as shown in this vid. Then you will see the bracket that holds the 2 cables you can litrally hold that bracket from going bak under the carpet as you put the handbrake down and you will hear clicks as the clip thing goes over the threads. Hope this helps a bit
Po polsku na dole. To release "self-adjusting" mechanism -> hold hand on this metal part with links and than press gray lever (on the top of mechanism 1:23) to front side of the car. After this pull metal part with links to you. Żeby zresetować mechanizm do nowych linek. Trzymaj ręką ten element w których są linki a następnie naciśnij dźwignie która jest nad mechanizmem (1:23) w stronę przodu samochodu. Wtedy ciągnij element z linkami do siebie.
No idea what's he doing . Say something for God sake.. explain
lol! What can I say Art!? I know it's a terrible video and I hope to replace it once the finer weather arrives and the light is good enough. I've also got to find a way of editing the video (a long time ago YT used to help with this but I can non longer see this), any tips on how to edit (other than VLC - it was useless) will be appreciated. In the meantime ask me a question and I'll try to answer it.
Pretty pathetic wasn’t it, must have lost his voice 😒
I have gone to much with the adjustment, would you know how I can slacken it off. Just can't figure it out and don't want to break anything. Would be very much appreciated.
I've not had to slacken the ratchet but I guess that you'll need to look at how the ratchet works and try to push the mechanism with a long screwdriver. It looks fairly simple in the way it works. Release the h/brake, push the mechanism with the screwdriver and look for it releasing.
@@andyroid7339 still can't figure but much appreciated.
@@runstyle253 I never had to do this but maybe try releasing the h/brake, pushing away from you on the tag thing sticking up and at the same time pull on the yoke? Please let me know if it works. I've made an improved video but I'm poor on editing. I'll upload it as soon as I can but it still won't show the answer you need. Sorry.
@@andyroid7339 thanks again I will give that a go next opertunity. That lug thing I believe is called the fixation tab and looks and feels very easy to break as I think its cast.
@@runstyle253 Re: breaking - Yes I agree, but I don't think you would need much force to release the mechanism, so well within the stress of the tab. I guess that the key will be pulling back the yoke whilst applying force to the tab
I have an issue with my AstraJ GTC handbrake (self adjusting) not holding very well so your video has gave me a little hope that I can improve it, more so for its MOT thats not far away.Had same problem last year and no one has done a video until yours just wish it was a bit more clearer on what to do. Gonna look at it tomorrow.Oh and just noticed your detailing on what to do. Perfect! Thanks.
You just saved me a couple of bucks. thanks amigo
great! Glad I could help.
@@andyroid7339 Hi Andy I think I over did it and not the car won't move even with the hand brake up, how can I reduce the resistance?
@@luxautoauctions8734 Hi, take a look at the other reply I've just posted. It's a fairly simple mechanism so you should be OK. Just release the h/brake first.
@@andyroid7339 thanks I will have a look
Excellent video you’ve saved me a lot of time messing about trying to adjust handbrake up thank you
that's great news Paul. I am just surprised that this vid isn't out there already
Thanks for taking the time, unfortunately I am no clearer and have a few questions: 1. You remove the sleeve and then proceed to access it from the back seats. I assume that first step was unecessary? 2. Are you doing anything with the screwdriver? Or are you just using it as a pointing tool? 3. What are you doing with the hammer handle as I can't see you applying any force or such using it? Thanks.
Hi Andrew, thanks or watching my terrible video! I really will have to remake this! The screwdriver is just used to point to the yoke - the bracket to which the handbrake cables are joined. I used the hammer (use whatever you have to do this job) to push the yoke against the handbrake as I released it, causing the handbrake to "take up slack" and tighten. The problem seems to be that the slack doesn't have enough resistance to push the self-tightening ratchet mechanism itself. Providing the resistance by using the hammer shaft seemed to do it. Removal of the cover is easy - just don't use anything sharp. You could possibly use your hand to pull it off. I made this video as an aid, only because surprisingly, no one out there has made one to show the ease of this operation. Any more qu's just ask.
@@andyroid7339 great! That makes sense, it's what I thought you did but I wasn't sure. Put handbrake on > hold something to stop yoke retreating > release handbrake a bit > bingo - slack taken up. Thanks!
