Hi, Let me explain, this video tutorial is related to calculation of sample size not the population size. Population size is not estimated it should be counted. This data can be obtained from the institution.

@@InstituteTrainingServices there is 49,796 students in this one city, how can we get the 3 sample size if in our study we should get 3 institutions.

Basically you are facing two situations. The first population is institutions, and obviously that cannot equal to 49 thousand. So, you have to select randomly three institutions first using any random method. Then, you need to calculate sample size using formula explained above, or there is another video related to known population. Once you get sample size, allocate this sample size to these institutions. You again need to use random sampling methods to get information from the students in these institutions

Remember in mind, you are interested to generalise findings related to students, not institutions. Therefore, estimation of sample size for institutions is not necessary. That you can pick based on your convenience.

Then the average from your pilot study would be P. Let say if you are studying a particular diseas its factors then the number people out of the total having that particular disease would be your P
