Racing the special forces - Fan Dance (First in Events: Summer 2024 edition)
What a tough event this was - running the infamous UK special forces selection event named Fan Dance. It is a 14 mile out and back ruck / tab with over 1,000 meters of climbing, whilst carrying 35lbs of kit, plus at least 3litres water and food.
Finished it off in 3hr 46mins, which is well within the selection time of 4hr 10mins. A hard and rewarding challenge! Finished 2nd overall for "Loaded" runners.
Event run by First in Events, whose founder is Tom Blakey, aka Prepared Pathfinder. Check out the organisation, and also Tom's youtube and IG channels.

Took on the Norwegian Foot March after watching Austen Alexander doing it, and also in preparation for taking on the Fan Dance in a few weeks time. It is a tough rucking challenge that comes, unsurprisingly, from Norway. However, it is not just their military that completes it, so do civilians, and also other militaries from around the world. Awesome video mate and congratulations! Did you run at all on the way up to pen y fan on first ascent? I did it with a different company this summer, loved it but got my tactics totally wrong! Jacob’s ladder blind summit still haunts me!

      @ridermacleod423 thanks 😊 nope, just fast walked the whole way up. Didn't run until descending the Roman Road and the forest track. I did the same and got my tactics wrong the first time - went too quick up first ascent, and then ran too hard down Jacob's. My legs never recovered and was only 3 miles in! Well done on your Fan Dance, it is a brutal event! Especially that final climb up Jacob's....

    I don’t know what the forests are like in the UK, I imagine there are some that are pretty remote and dangerous, but I find people really underestimate the expanses of wilds that we are fortunate to still have in the Western Hemisphere. My aid kit is generally in three pieces for long treks, but all contain the same things (or rather are complete) I have a small/medium that is accessible to me without taking a pack off (this will include small sunscreen and bug sprays, wipes, minor wounds, stings, meds, and the basics you’d keep in your car for a day trip, the second is almost the same as the first but is deep in my pack and just right where yours is with the cookware, the third have some minor boo boo stuff, but is always bright orange or red and is in a separate waterproof pouch with a carabiner or quick release with a 6ft string tied to it. This way, if someone finds me injured they hopefully see oh his aid kit is right here and aren’t digging around getting thrown off by pots and pans while I’m bleeding out or having severe anaphylaxis or something. The other thing is is I were to find another person in severe distress, with all that adrenaline I can take off my bag, set it down, pull it off I have 6 feet to work with before I gotta cut a string but everything is labeled with the expectation that somebody who isn’t me and doesn’t know what is in there can find everything… this helps when you’re shaking and terrified to work on someone else but god forbid you’re not just their best option, you’re the only option. I NEVER ever ever ever touch the red aid kit unless I absolutely have to, and if I have need to open it to get an item… I now know I need to buy 3. For the other two kits.

    • @lloydrunningfree
      @lloydrunningfree 20 дней назад

      @thegrandlevel313 Thanks for your comments and great insight. nice kit and prep! We have a few forests, but they have been cut back extensively from what they were. All the "wild" dangerous animal have been hunted to extinction as well. That said, you can get injured and/or lost within a mile of car park in the wild, so always best to be prepared.

    I was in my fifties when I did my first FD. My older son did it with me but he left me well behind. He completed it about 40 minutes before I did. That made me determined to improve my time and over the next year or so it became easier (but never easy) and I was eventually able to match his time. I came to love endurance mountain running but it all came to a screeching halt 10 years ago when I was hit by a car while crossing a road in my home village. Wrecked my right knee, dislocated my left shoulder and fractured my left clavicle. Now, I don't think I could make it from Storey Arms to the top of Pen Y Fan even at a gentle walking pace. I miss my trail running every damned day.😢

  • @crackpot148
    @crackpot148 27 дней назад

    In the past I have done the FD several times in well under 4 hours each time. Though I have to say I had been into endurance hill running for years and I was very fit. Living only 20 miles away, on average I spent two weekends a month running the BBNP mountain trails for well over a decade and I always travelled light carrying only water, sandwiches, a small first aid pack and 2 mobile phones, each with a different service provider. I would also run 10 miles three times a week on the countryside trails around the village where I live. Added to that, I started each FD completely fresh and rested. I don't think I could ever have "qualified" for SAS training if I had been one of those squaddies who had been through the demanding beat up they have to endure in the days before the FD and I have nothing but admiration for those lads who attempt that fitness test, whether they pass or fail.

    The test you have just done is actually the Specialist Firearms Officer treadmill test, an alternative to the bleep test which they run to level 10.5. The treadmill test IS run at 10.4kmph but the gradient is as follows: 0-2 mins 0% 2-4 mins 2% 4-6 mins 4% 6-8 mins 5% 8-10 mins 8%. I'm reasonably fit, I ran this today. It isn't especially hard but like all fitness you have to work at it and I very much doubt the vast majority of people of average fitness would pass it first time if asked to do it this very minute....for you to finish this without breaking a sweat and talking easily shows you to be very fit but perhaps do another video from the start of the 10 minutes to the end, with the gradient showing at each stage. But i agree level 5.4 on the bleep test is too low.
