    i had the lens. it served its purpose at the time 10 yrs ago. but the 400mm end is soft. the new z100-400 or z180-600 will be the better choice at this time and age. smaller and sharper and cheap too. the f mount 180-400 with internal TC is also dropping price on used market too

  • @labalia30

    Thanks a lot for your very thorough explanation. I am a bit late to the party but it is always interesting to hear such analysis! I own a D500 and a z6 and mostly (almost only) use the D500 for wildlife nowadays, as the tracking of birds in flight is better - and the handling of bigger lenses is easier, especially with bigger lenses. But for other applications, I use my z6 or zfc. The z6 with IBIS and focus peaking is perfect with older AI lenses. I even got so far as acquiring Nikon 1 v2's, mirrorless from 2012, which have a 2.7x crop sensor and transform 300mm into a 810mm eq. for a minimal weight - perfect for walking around and shooting small birds or far-away ducks!

    Did you take photos handheld with this lens? At what shutter speed did camera shake become a problem? Was the required shutter speed higher with the converter? My Z50 doesn’t have IBIS. Thinking about buying this lens as a smaller, lighter, and budget option to take on a trip to central Australia in a few months (compared to the z 180mm-600mm I bought recently and used up my budget on). Don't know whether I could hold it steady enough for handheld use to see, focus and follow (physically track moving animals). But I do have a monopod and the image results sound amazing. Would appreciate your first-hand feedback. Thanks!

    • @MitchellCoyle
      @MitchellCoyle 5 месяцев назад

      Hey dude! I did hand hold nearly all of my photos with this lens, this was also with the nikon d7100 and nikon d500 which don’t have IBIS due to the fact they aren’t mirrorless cameras. The lens still does great at handheld, it is super lightweight, not big enough to catch any wind sway and for my I’d say you don’t need IBIS paired with this lens to get good results. Shutter speed wise of course when it’s bright enough you’d ideally want to stay around the 1/300th-1/600th or higher range. However, I’ve definitely taken slower shutter speed shots with this lens, depending on your arm stability I’d bet you could go to 1/40th-1/80th shutter speeds and still get good results. As a smaller lightweight option I think it’s a great choice! Although I have moved past this lens. I bought the 200-400mm f4 vrII lens 2 years ago but it is massive and heavy, does provide great results. I’d maybe still tell you to go with your 180-600! It’s new, great quality, has vr, and has a great zoom range compared to the prime 300 f4. Up to you but I’d stick with the 180-600z for a trip - especially Australia where it looks like a lot more birds than large wildlife and you’ll probably want 600mm reach.

  • @TheCondoInRedondo
    @TheCondoInRedondo 7 месяцев назад

    The 200-400 got an unfairly bad reputation for focus fails at close range. I bought one used ten years ago (the original version, not the VRII) and never suffered any issues. This lens is a better match for full-frame sensors of 24 MP or less, such as the D750, D3/3S, D4/4S, D5, D6. When mated with the D810, that's when the lens' limits become apparent. The lens can't quite keep up with the higher sensor resolution wide-open. Stopped down to 5.6, it will perform well on just about any sensor.

    • @MitchellCoyle
      @MitchellCoyle Год назад

      Hi there! Thanks for watching, apologies for the slow response- I haven’t been on RUclips much at all lately! From my brief experiences with the 200-500 when shooting with my friend who owns and uses this as his main lens - the one stop of light doesn’t seem to make to much of a difference, especially if you’re already at a higher ISO anyways. My friend does really like the 500mm reach that it gets, however we do find that when comparing just general quality the 200-400mm tends to provide just tiny tiny bit better results with image quality. They are very comparable lenses and to decide between buying them it might be up to budget, weight, and the size of your subjects!

    Nice review. I just bought this lens for the same price that you did, and as you said, used but looks new. What foot did you put on this and how do you remove the old foot to swap out? Can you tell me what gimbal your using? Also thinking that the longer the reach of a lens (TC) the more you suffer from atmospheric stacking... aberrations, heat mirage, etc. Thanks!

    • @MitchellCoyle
      @MitchellCoyle 2 года назад

      Hi Butch! Thank you! I actually kept the same foot on there and just screwed in your basic (quite long) arca swiss bracket to attach to the gimbal! The gimbal is the Oben Gh-130c and it has been absolutely fantastic! Easy to attach the camera with the arca swiss System and holds the lens well! And yes you definitely suffer more with those issues when using the TC! After other comments pointed it out I used a bad example clip for my tc explanation, because all that was was heat mirage as you stated! I hope/know you will enjoy the new lens! It has been an absolute favorite of mine since buying it!

And Yes I actually was just through the glacier area last week, got some awesome photos, and I will be posting some of the best ones on my wildlife photography Instagram page @mitchellcoylewildlife as soon as possible!! But I didn’t film any new RUclips videos during this trip, but more will be coming soon once I’m settled out in Seattle and can get back to editing!

      I recently got the REI flash hiking boots and love them. Recycled material, water proof and great treads
