Trees Of Carolinian Ontario
Канада
Добавлен 18 сен 2022
This channel features the beautiful native trees of the Carolinian Forest Region of Ontario, filmed almost entirely by a DJI Mini-4 drone. Certain tree species that are common in the United States reach their northern limit here, mostly along Lake Erie. There are also some native plants, both in the wild and planted, and harvest of native plants using vintage Allis-Chalmers All-Crops and Gleaner.
Carolinian Trees // Pin Oak
Pin Oak is not found in Norfolk County, so this video includes clips from both Niagara Region and Essex County. I have not been in either location at the right time to film flowers or fall colours, although the one row of trees was filmed in early October and the leaves look yellowish. On that trip, we forgot the tripod!
Filmed with a Canon XA15 Camcorder, DJI Mini-2 drone and DJI Mini-4 drone.

Allis-Chalmers Gleaner K2 Breakdown While Harvesting Switch Grass

The 1978 Allis-Chalmers Gleaner K2 had broken down when we went to film it harvesting Switch Grass. We added in some Gleaner close-up footage, and a slideshow of safety labels. The Gleaner was repaired and went on to finish the harvest, but is still in need of some repairs! Breakdowns are common for such an old and complex machine. The TRAGIC Loss of a MAGNIFICENT 240 Year Old White Elm

Updated! It was a sad day on May 27, 2024 as I drove into Backus Woods (Norfolk County, Ontario) via the sand road and discovered that the magnificent 240 year old White Elm just before the entrance was dead. I have admired this gorgeous tree for a long time, and found photos and clips from 2017 on. This White Elm has a diameter of 146 cm or 4'8". It is not far behind the Ontario champion White...

First Day of Summer In Carolinian Ontario
Amazing tree, I was in backus woods 2 days ago and grabbed a few seeds.
Lots of great Tulip Trees in Backus!
Wonderful places, Carolinian Trees, Kentucky Coffee Tree. Thank you. Video 👍
Thanks :)
@@treesofcarolinianontario You're welcome friend 🙂
Just planted 3 of them in my yard. Super excited too watch them grow. ❤
They make great yard trees because they are small! Dwarf Hackberry makes a great yard tree too with pruning :) Hope your trees do well.
@treesofcarolinianontario thanks yea I have lot of stuff planted hopefully I'll get to show it off in a couple years
Why run the reel speed so high?? Probably beating most of the seed off before it ever gets in the header! Only need to run the reel about 10% faster than ground speed-- just enough to pull stuff into the head and across the sickle to cut it, and drop it into the auger. Have you checked your header losses on the ground? Checked to see how much is on the ground to start with? Good luck!
The camera makes the speed look faster. I asked and there is a small amount of waste. The variable speed for the header isn't working.
Hi! I am very interesting in your brushing machine, since I have alfafa, lyme grass and artemisia campestris to collect from field, would you please send me more information on such machine and I would like to buy some. thank you!
If you email me, I will forward it to someone who can give you information. I just do the filming :) Email: treesofcarolinianontario@gmail.com
Your video was truly beautiful and inspiring. As a fellow creator, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Sub and 👍7
Thank you. It has taken a few years to get better with the drone :) And the colours were great this year!
Colorful autumn colors, the most beautiful aerial photography, John likes you❤❤❤👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Wonderful 240 Year Old White Oak and other trees, fall colours, footage, music.Thank you for video sharing. Video liked 👍 I subscribed to your great channel (hope you too). friend number 283 🙂
That's very kind :)
Wonderful forest places and trees fall colors, footage, music. Thank you for video sharing. Video liked 👍
Thank you :) I appreciate your comment!
@@treesofcarolinianontario You're welcome friend 🙂
Is that reel spinning fadt enough?
It got the job done :)
I do the filming, but I asked the driver and was told that the spinning part has issues and only goes one speed for now :)
Nice video! Is your K2 gas or diesel powered? I couldn't tell in the video. Sure is a good looking machine for it's age!
Thank you. The Gleaner does look pretty good. It is a gas powered Chevy engine 😊
Oops, used the wrong log-in. Happens sometimes with two channels!
Great video! I’m near Kincardine…restoring an All Crop. Any chance you could post a quick video of the auger side of the grain drag? Last fall I removed the chain guides and made new wood/metal parts. I can’t remember how it goes together LOL. I should have taken pics as I took things apart. Take care!
Sure be glad to when I can get access. Maybe by tomorrow. That All-Crop was purchased near Bayfield :)
@@treesofcarolinianontario Awesome! I would love to have a look at it….do you think that is possible? Bay field isn’t too far from me. Thanks x 100
Can you please contact me by email? treesofcarolinianontario@gmail.com Thanks!
You would get more to watch if you would talk a little.
Thanks, I'm sure that's true 😀
Epic tree, bro.
That's for sure :)
Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you :) Same to you!
😁
Beautiful footage of Hop Trees! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you 😊
They are native in Niagara on the haldimand clay plain too. Just very rare to find bc they were all cut out 100-150 years ago for lumber. They grew everywhere in southern ontario
Thanks for your comment. Sad so many trees were cut down.
Did you see creek access at this location for paddling?
No access there.
@@treesofcarolinianontario Just getting this message today... found out the hard way yesterday that the trails are very overgrown. If any other paddlers find this in search of a put in... use the access point at Road 60 or 3rd line if you want a shorter trek. Thanks TOCO for the reply & video.
Those are both good launch spots. I have videos for both 😀 Lots of fallen trees across Big Creek blocking the way.
I love seeing the hop trees at point pelee!
They are nice there, and plentiful 😀
Wonderful place, thk for sharing, like and sub for you ❤
Thank you very much :)
Looks like a cool place, I'll have to check it out, thanks!
It's a great place to kayak or canoe :)
Very nice, the reds, silvers and crosses are the common swamp tree in my neck of the woods. Wish there were more swamp white oaks.
There is good diversity in Backus.
The labels are very helpful. 😉
Thanks :)
This tree did not fall in vain! Adjacent seedlings will benefit from additional sunlight, countless tiny animals and organisms will have a new food source as well as a new home while precious nutrients will be added to the soil. The cycle of tree life will continue. The tree is dead, long live the forest!! 🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲
Well said 😀
@@treesofcarolinianontario What species is it?
Ah, you got me. I'm not sure. It's probably a Maple or possibly an Oak.
Wonderfully done, love the dogwood
Thank you :) Dogwoods are awesome!
Nice video as always. What's the tree at 2:57 - 3:01?
Didn't notice while filming lol. I think Black Gum, maybe Sassafras. I'll be going back soon so I'll let you know 😀
I was in your neck of the woods several days ago (visiting south coast nursery for the 1st time) and it's such a joy to see how many flowering dogwoods are visible from the roads! Beautiful area!
Thank you! The EFDs have been outstanding this year, and long lasting too. It must have been ideal weather for them.
Really appreciate your videos!
Thank you so much :)
Outstanding small tree/large shrub! Lucky to have it grow wild! I heard there was a record sized one here in Burlington (around King Rd and North Service Rd area) years back but unfortunately is no longer here.
They can get quite large :) There's supposed to be a really large one near Thamesville. I'll have to check it out when I'm down that way.
When did Red Pine become non-native?
It's non-native to the Carolinian Zone, but native to more northern Ontario. Red Pine, White Spruce and White Birch are all not native to the Carolinian Zone, according to Farrar in Trees In Canada :)
Beautiful! I guess the flowing dogwoods are up next for white flower show! I know there's lots of them in Norfolk County
I just went by that same corner. The Serviceberries are done and the Dogwoods are out!! Spring is really moving fast now :)
Are Scots Pine 0:14 Carolinian?
Lol, no they are not. However, that's the prettiest corner for Downey Serviceberry, and Eastern Flowering Dogwood too when they come out.
I think most people view zone hardiness as only cold hardiness, but in the case of White Spruce heat hardiness needs to be considered. Even though White Spruce is native to most of Ontario it's been my experience that they start to struggle in the summer heat and drought of extreme southern Ontario. Won't stop landscapers from bur-lapping them up in winter even though they're the 1st trees to appear in the artic circle, lol
Beautiful specimen! If you're ever in Dundas, check out another massive one in the Dundas driving park, north side of the park.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out when I can :)
Do you think this oak misses the forest that used to keep it company?
No, I don't think so. It probably enjoys the space to spread its branches. It has some saplings around it to keep it company :)
You have the eye of an artist. Very enjoyable!
Thank you. When the weather is lousy, you have to get creative :)
Awesome video, as usual!
Thanks :)
Very unique place for southern Ontario to have acidic soils. Wild blueberries and Rhododendrons are found growing there. I didn't know it also has a population of Massasauga Rattlesnakes too!
It is an interesting place :)
You have had some awesome weather for getting out to see the trees!
It was a very nice day and there was no wind :)
I could not find a Hemlock emoji so this Spruce 🌲will have to do.
@@crataeguscrusgalli Really?
I was wondering what a Rondeau tree was.🤔 Always read the fine print. 🌳🌲🌲🌳
Fixed.
Beautiful trees! Also I find very picky about growing conditions!
They are hard to grow, at least for me. I planted 3, they all died so I gave up :) Sandy soil is probably not their preferred habitat, however my neighbour has a mid-size Hemlock in his yard.
Much thanks! I'm surprised that you don't have any snow on the ground. In my corner of the Carolinian, we got a good dusting of snow on New Year's Eve. In Cambridge, they got much more. Happy New Year, Tree Watch In Carolinian Ontario!
No snow here. Quite mild but overcast. We could see dark clouds in the distance, probably your snowfall :)
Merry Christmas
Thank you. Merry Christmas to you :)
Beautiful area!
I really like the Eastern Cottonwoods in the sand dunes plus the grasses. I'll have to go back on a clear day and go further along the Point :) Thanks.
Very Nice! Looks like perfect sycamore habitat!
That's true. Sadly not many, but lots of Crack / White Willow.
Good flight and smooth moves! like from another mavic user!
Thanks!
RIP DJI Mini-2 😥
Thanks :)
