Hi George,I love the variety of techniques you incorporate into your works, especially the abstraction using scumbling and scraping and using the oil sticks must save a lot of time.I would be interested to know whether you use acrylic with oil sticks or do you just patiently have to wait for the oil paint to dry before using the oil sticks?I do a bit of teaching and would love to show and teach your process.great video too.

He’s absolutely delightful! I’m so glad you were able to talk him into doing a video interview. I found his ideas about color, particularly purple and yellow, especially interesting. Will look forward to seeing more of his paintings when we visit the gallery next year.

Hi George, I was born in Vine St and lived there until I was 12 before moving to Knightswood. My two older sisters attended Hyndland and my cousin, Ian Welsh went onto The Glasgow School of Art. As a child I always drew but a young boy was not allowed to aspire to become an artist. I ended up in John Brown’s Shipyard as a Draughtsman. During that time I met Tom McKendrick and I remember meeting Tom one day, he told me “my time is out and I am going to Art school” I was so envious. Wonderful paintings George

I came across the interview with George Birrell by accident. Fascinating !Then I discovered your 'newsletter'. A great joy to know that painters are producing skillful paintings once more. You mentioned Houston , Texas... that intrigued me because I suspect there are some British trained artists and artisans working here in Texas. There is a potter (Glasgow trained) near me and I hope to visit him soon. There are no serious galleries here and it is hard unless one is computer savvy to publicise and sell art work of a serious nature online. Thanks for starting a new (away from London) gallery and also thanks for putting the 'newsletters' online , it makes painters, sculptors and artisans feel a little less like dinosaurs and out of fashion in an 'American Colorist ' world.
