Becoming a Barbarian by Jack Donovan is a Practical Philosophy of Identity
just renewed and got a library card for the first time since highschool just to read some Blake Crouch I'm liking this one so far
Right on, glad you're enjoying it!
Sounds similar to books by writer Robert R McCammon, who I really like. Just ordered a copy of Carrion Comfort. Thanks for this review.
Fantastic, hope you enjoy the read!
Thanks, Michael
Thanks!!!
Absolutely! Also, I finished The Blackest Heart a little while back, and I *really* enjoyed it. I've been on hiatus for most of this year because I'm a new father, but I'll review it soon. Wishing you all the best!
I’m so sorry, bro. I could have sworn I already left a comment here. Maybe because I ran straight to DMs to thank you. Thank you again for the review. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
No worries, thanks again for the beautiful signed copy!
God, this book was so damn good
For sure, it was outstanding!
This book is so much fun!
Fully agreed, glad you enjoyed it too!
Good to see a review for this. I saw the book recently in B&N and thought it looked interesting. I have to say it's one of the best horror novels I ever read. I have Summer of Night up next for Dan Simmons. I love Saul, Natalie and Robert. And those villains were so awful. Loved them!
For sure, it's amazing, and I'm totally with you on the characters!
Great review. Thanks Michael.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Aww, love you this! Such a delightful review, and congrats on the baby!
Thank you so much! She's sort of the reason it's taken me so long to do this review (I finished the book back in January), but I'm glad to be back on Booktube and I'm delighted to help spread the word about this amazing book!
Great review. Indie is the future.
Right on, I'll drink to that!
Love this book.
It's pretty incredible, isn't it?
@@MichaelRSchultheiss I will never forget Melanie Fuller.
@@Cesar82nd for sure, terrifyingly crazy villain
Foamfollower and the giants of seasearch made the story unfortunately is lost his person is sorely missed in the rest of the story
This book sounds great. Would this be a good place to start with Dan Simmons? Would this be a good one if your looking for a horror novel that throws summer vibes?
Excellent question! Dan Simmons has such an incredible range as an author that it can be a little tricky, but I'd say this is a decent place to start if you're looking for horror--but you might prefer Summer of Night, and Carrion Comfort is far, far better.
Thanks for sharing. Read the novel years ago. Sympathized with Ike.
He's a fascinating, and indeed quite sympathetic character
Great review of a great book. All very salient points! 👏 This book was so, so good, and I NEVER hear anyone talk about it! I am 3/4 of the way though the second one, Darkblade: Protector, and the writing is consistently fantastic. Peloquin carries on the plots from Darkblade: Assassin very skillfully.
Thank you so much! Glad to hear Peloquin does such a superb job on the second one--I'll have to pick that one up at some point, TBR permitting!
Bardin is the 1 that got me.
I well relate, though [redacted] is the one that hit me like a blade through the gut.
This is a great summary of the book. Really enjoyed your detailed commentary on this
Thank you so much!
This is one of my favorite reviews of this book. I really appreciate the understated defense against some of the commonly vehement condemnations of certain portrayals. Some of those critiques really bug me, and I think you get it. The whole Second Apocalypse series is absolutely incredible in my mind. I don't fault anyone for not wanting to read or finish it because of how dark it actually gets, but it really did it for me. There are books you read for enjoyment and there are books that change you. This book and the series that followed it changed me.
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed the review! Totally with you: I find a lot of those critiques rather... precious, and the people who make them shouldn't be reading this series. I completely relate to being changed by these books!
@@MichaelRSchultheiss I agree with the Dune bit too. I didn't notice it the first time I read PoN because it had been years since I read Dune and I'd been pretty young, but I reread it and Dune Messiah recently, and the influence is pretty clear though closer inspection shows just how different Kellhus and Paul actually are. Paul is trapped by precognition, determined by the future he can't change while Kellhus seems more like a force of nature designed to exploit the past that everyone else is trapped by.
Excellent analysis,@@wesleyking6713, and I think it's particularly interesting the way Kellhus's Dunyain conditioning makes him hyper-rational. There's certainly something almost elemental about it. Have you heard R. Scott Bakker's comments about AI, what he calls a "semantic apocalypse?" Definitely some good tie-ins and insights into his series.
@@MichaelRSchultheiss I have not. I'll have to look into that. I'm not sure how to feel about the whole AI thing. Machine learning has a long way to go. Thanks.
@@MichaelRSchultheiss Okay, I haven't seen the AI stuff yet, but I just read his post explaining the Semantic Apocalypse, and it was horrifying. I'm suddenly even more glad that we don't understand how brains work yet.
Thanks for the review! I really liked Let the Right One In so This book sounds great!
Glad to hear it, do let me know what you think! Cheers, and happy reading to you!
I absolutely loved this and its sequel
Right on, I loved the sequel as well!
Good review though, this youtube thing is tough and numbers might not always chalk up and so on, but the review and video are good. Rare subject to be covered and you did a good and honest job.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!
Löns is pronounced like learns without the R. Imagine how an Englishman would pronounce it. Generally, those dots, called umlauts, are like an e after the word, or an i before. ä, like the ai in aid ö, like o with marbles in your mouth I guess. ü, like the u in rebuke
Thank you so much, I'm always happy to learn these kinds of things! Cheers!
Looking forward to getting to this at the end of the month!
Thank you so much for your interest, and I'll look forward to your thoughts!
I love sword and sorcery.
Right on, same here!
Awesome review of SRM issue 1! Thank you much, sir. Also, I just picked up the first book in your series. Sounds like a fun read.
My pleasure, and thank you so much for picking up The Altar of My Fate! Cheers!
Heard nothing but praise for this one
That makes perfect sense to me!
Thanks for the awesome review. The Krun are a race of saurians who evolved from dinosaurs on earth in a parallel universe. The apocalyptic event was the Crash, which merged numerous parallel earths into one world. The Krun had a global empire in one of those and are looking to reclaim it.
That is incredibly cool! I've read a couple of your stories now in Savage Realms Monthly, and I've been impressed by both of them. Cheers!
@@MichaelRSchultheiss Thank you. I have a third submitted and am working on a book.
That is fantastic,@@kellmyers8708! Please let me know when you release your book!
@@MichaelRSchultheiss Will do.
Thank you for this review. I'm definitely reading this ASAP. I'm a huge fan of Hyperion Cantos and it's about time for me to try his other works.
Fantastic, glad to hear it! Hyperion is *amazing.* At some point, I'll sit down and re-read it so I can review it here. Cheers!
@@MichaelRSchultheiss I look forward to your Hyperion review then.
Hey Michael, I just want to thank you profusely for taking the time to read Dark Hilarity and produce such an insightful and detailed review. Your commentary on the characterisation is truly humbling. It really has made my day! Thank you for all you do for indie authors.
Absolutely my pleasure! Thank you so much for writing such a wonderful book and sharing it with the world!
The book sounds great!
Awesome! Do check it out and let me know what you think!
Hiiii Michael!!!
Hey buddy! Great to hear from you!
Drood is one of my all time favorites. I must mention my favorite scene, where I literally laughed until I cried. This is the Christmas Charles Macready is invited and he’s all “ah ah…by god, Dickens!” And dickens’s daughters are rolling their eyes at one another. 😂😂😂 I’m no fan of Dickens’s writing nor his character. 😒 So I enjoyed him being a prat in this. I’ve tried to read Dan Simmons before and couldn’t get into him. I think I’m the exception to your rule because this is a book I’m rather obsessed with. Bought it for $1, too. Thanks for reviewing!
That's a great favorite scene! Cheers, thank you so much for watching and commenting!
You're going to need a new rating system if you're going to continue in the series. Each book gets better. It is by far my favorite series!
Thank you, that is very good news!
When you want to talk about the (amazing!) music, why not play short clips (30 seconds or so should do) instead of stumbling with inadequate words?
Good suggestion. No words can really do Wagner's music justice
Wotan IS Wagner! Wagner spent a lot of time fleeing creditors. The working out of the 'Ring' is Wotan and the gods defaulting on their promise to use Freya as payment for the giant's construction work on Valhalla. A situation with which Little Dickie Wagner was all too uncomfortably familiar. Me, I root for Loki/Loge. Who possesses both high intelligence and low cunning. Just like me, or so some tell me.
That is very interesting, not to mention funny. Thanks for the information!
I’ve got to watch this. Thank you!
Fantastic, hope you enjoy! I'd love to hear your impressions
Glad you loved these operas! Wagner's Ring Cycle is my favorite of all operas, and Wagner has been a favorite composer for me since music school. I've only seen Das Rheingold and Die Walkure live, but hope to complete my own personal cycle someday! But I do own two sets of Blurays - the Met's Otto Schenk production and the Met's Robert Lapage production. Both are top tier, although the Schenk is probably my favorite as its more traditional.
Oh, you've seen them live!!! That must have been incredible!!! I'll have to check out both of those productions.
@@MichaelRSchultheiss yes, experiencing it live is pretty remarkable. I have a pipe dream of going to Bayreuth, Germany for the Wagner Festival and watching all 4 operas in 4 consecutive nights.
@@RedFuryBooks that's an outstanding aspiration!
sounds cool! I'll check the audiobook!
Fantastic, hope you enjoy it!
Best of luck with the book launch!
Thank you so much, my friend!
Dope
I'm REALLY enjoying The Blackest Heart! You, sir, are a marvelous story-teller!
I just finished The Forgetting Moon and loved it... so utterly hooked on these characters, the world the plot.. I ordered the sequel before I finished the first and have got stuck straight into it.. I need to know what happens and this progresses.
I'm totally with you! The Blackest Heart is *amazing,* and I can't wait to see where the story goes!
Durfee's channel is awesome! I have just started this book
Absolutely, his reviews are great! Cheers, let me know what you think of the book!
Glad the reading is going so well and best of luck with book 5!
Thank you so much, my friend!
This one has been on my radar for a minute now. I’ve been wanting to read it
Do it! I suspect you'll love it!
The No God is pleased!!! Great video my man. I'm getting into a reread of The Second Apocalypse series next month.
Oh, right on! I've already started The Prince of Nothing, but I'd be very glad for the chance to participate in the read-along!
