    Great advice. One question about when you're starting out and doing a bunch of no/low pay jobs to learn. As I work on those to learn, my ear is better than my skill level. I can hear flaws, but can only fix them to the level my skills will allow. At what point do you say " I can still hear flaws, but this is as good as I can get it right now"?

    What you mean with guide tracks? Field recorder guide tracks?

    • @masteringpostproductionsound
      @masteringpostproductionsound 13 дней назад

      No, a guide track refers to the picture editors mix track. The picture editor will usually cut to a temp score & temp sound fx. This is then passed on to the sound team for reference. Our job is to always we have our filmmakers sonic vision. Hope that helps clear it up.

    "Be patient and persistent". This is encouraging to me as it speaks to being realistic about how long it may take to achieve success. It wont be overnight. And, I like the emphasis on how you personally change and who you become as a result of the journey, not just the accomplishment of the goal. I value personal growth tremendously, too.

      Sorry for being blunt. But, people like me who are in this industry from a very long time, will be curious to know the actual workflow and any hacks or tricks to reduce the tasks. For example, you could choose a couple of scenes of your choice from your previous work and show how you would final mix it from scratch. From DX conforming to the aaf/omf, to DX editing, to FX tracking, to BGM premixing, to foley premixing, to Final mixing etc. There is hardly any content on final Atmos mixing, you could get into that, if you will. I know this a lot to giveaway on a YT channel. But I strongly believe that, you will get students for one to one coaching from the traffic you will get from this.

    Excellent points all around! I've been floating around RUclips since the early 2010s and during college I thought I'd be doing big post production sound jobs for a career. I'll be going on 30 come next February, and only in the last few years have I started taking my online presence a little more seriously. I'd done some video editing as fun passion projects in addition to my regular day job as an editor, but recently I've begun exploring more post production audio projects as a way to relearn the craft and build a new network. I am currently doing SFX editing for an original science fiction radio drama that I produced over the summer. I am aiming to release it on RUclips along with a potential website for my services as a social media post production editor.

    What holds me back is the fear of having been away from the industry for almost a year. I started as a senior sound engineer assistant, and now I'm worried about starting all over again as a freelance sound editor and designer. I don't have a lot of experience-just one year in a studio. While that year was fruitful and a big learning experience, I didn't get the chance to work on many sound projects; it was mostly focused on recording sessions. So, I'm a bit wary about stepping back into the industry alone. And when I say 'alone,' I mean completely on my own, without a mentor, fully depending on myself.

      I totally hear you!! Fear can be crippling! I know that I do not know your situation or the details, but I am confident that if you truly have a passion and desire, the way will find you. Will it be difficult? No doubt! Will there be uncertainty and unknowns? You better believe it! Will all that be enough to steer you away from your dreams and aspirations? Only you can answer that. I truly believe that we are not meant to do this industry alone! Isolation and loneliness navigating this industry can be souls and dream crushing! I am so glad you are here. I’ve journey with many just like you who are on this path. If you are looking to build confidence, strengthen your mindset and grows toward your post sound goals. I’d recommend looking into coaching or mentorship’s. It doesn’t have to be with me (although I do offer that) but with someone! I am excited for you. You are in a very exciting place to be, at the doorstep of something terrifying! Only you have the power to choose to take the step forward. You got this!!! 🫵🏽

    I love how down to the point Jeffrey said that! Back in 2014 when I was messing around with hopes of going into trailer music composing and early on in 2019 when I made the decision to side step into audio post production, I fell into the G.A.S. mindset (gear acquisition syndrome). "If only I had a better computer, or a control surface, or better plugins, THEN my mixes will sound better!" Up here in Idaho I have a lot of friends who are hardcore fishers and one of them told me one day when I asked how he got into fishing was that you can mess around for years with your nets, or poles, and lures, never setting foot in a boat. Or you can just get out there and start fishing! Lot of wisdom in the idea of just setting aside the gear and fears and just doing it.

    • @dianazakaria3664
      @dianazakaria3664 Месяц назад

      Totally agree! It's easy to fall into the G.A.S. trap, but just like with fishing, the real magic happens when you dive in and start doing the work. Thanks for sharing your experience-it's a great reminder to focus on the craft, not just the gear!

    Totally agree with all of this! Marketing and community aside, back when I did a trial run of social media for my senior project one of the biggest benefits was a drastic increase in my own learning. Rubber ducky method. When learning something, if you cant teach it and teach it well then you dont really know it! Posting tips and videos on socials helped me know my own weaknesses in post audio. Working towards gearing up on socials again. Just gotta make the time to get back at it 😊 Thanks for the reminder and motivation! I needed this 🎉
