When you play a note on a stringed instrument, all the other strings quietly harmonize that note. This effect is especially apparent on harp guitars with all the extra strings.
I attempted to capture this using Breezy from Final Fantasy, as that song only uses 4 of the guitar strings, and gives the rest of the instrument room to sing. I don't think my cheap mic does it justice, but I hear more sustain when listening side by side.
