We're Nick, Julie, and Sally (the dog), living in northern Wisconsin. We'd like to share our passion for making our own food from start to finish--from soil to plate. We invite you to share in our successes (and failures), nonetheless learning along the way.
Automated Chicken Door - Raspberry Pi
Here's a short summary and demonstration of an automated chicken door I built using a Raspberry Pi Zero W, an old drill, power supply, relays and materials for the door.

Week 7, we've been letting them freely range during the day, with no fence (as long as we're home). They enjoy protected areas under the trees.

John Suscovich Chicken Tractor Review And Notes
This is exactly my type of video. RUclips recommended it to me. It only has 4 views right now.
I like the wheels and the simplicity of the side guards which keep it on the track.
Is this system still working for you?
Great video, necessity is the mother of all inventions, well done....
For sale in Pakistan
Great video. I have always had leaks. I will try a tap.
I love the simplicity and the mostly-wood design. Thank you for sharing!
Bu tavuklarin cinsi nedir?Yumurta icin mi yoksa et icin mi?
Evler neden yerden yüksekte değil.Her türlü böcek içeri girebilir.Yilan dahil.
I would personally work on that paint job first!!
Seems pretty heavy. Are you able to put it up and take it down by yourself (without worrying that you will lose control)?
Thanks for sharing your great method for installing nipples. Worked fabulous and no leaks because of the thread lock!
I plan on making one of these but instead of mortising out the 2x4’s for the tubing I would weld a piece of flat steel maybe 3” x 6” on both ends of the tubing. Then bolt the flat steel to the 2x4. Same thing for the top pulley tubing. I might run a rod through the lower tubing and put some wheels on it. I noticed a Menards plastic bag in the video and they are a dealer for the Champion winch. Not sure if that’s where you got it from. Thanks for the video.
super
can you provide a small drawing to show how to construct this? Thanks!
With such a high frame, you could place it on the gable side and hoist all the way to the ridge to stack your packs there, rather than carrying each pack up the roof.
this might be good for solar panels too
very nice! I plan something very similar only i am a bit worried about rain. It would be nice to leave this setup for a few weeks or even months, and that standard winch you are using has to go indoors whenever it rains right?
That's correct. That electric hoist is rated for indoor use only. If you use a 12V or other outdoor winch, just consider that the rated capacity of winches is for horizontal load, and not vertical load, as hoists are rated.
I keep lots of wooden dunnage outdoors for years by slathering it with used motor oil which it promptly soaks up. You can make your winch quick disconnect which lets you use it for more than the lift.
