I worked at the Riviera Hotel as a Bluecoat entertainer in 1984 (when Pontins owned this hotel). From researching, the hotel appears to be currently owned by the Diyafa Group in Saudi Arabia who apparently were trying to sell the hotel but didn't get the asking price. I revisited the hotel with an old Pontins colleague in 2021 and there had been changes to reception over the years which was extended and was very nice. There was also an indoor swimming pool added and the ballroom area was further modernised. The outside pool however was out of use on our visit. Since our visit, it appears that a storm damaged the ballroom roof and the entire ballroom area was damaged. Upon further research and reviewing other videos, someone mentioned that they had spoken with the site manager and the security team and apparently they (I assume the Diyafa Group) are waiting on insurance finance. I am also assuming from seeing another recent video that, not only has the ballroom been stripped back but every area has been stripped back, including the wiring. After more research I had noticed that the Twentieth Century Organisation (an organisation that tries to save iconic listed buildings) had written to the current owners to ask what their plans are for the building. To my knowledge the owners hadn't responded. So, I am assuming and hoping that, as there is fencing around the building and security staff are present, in addition to the building being stripped back to basics, the Diyafa Group are actually waiting perhaps both for insurance finance from the storm damage and perhaps further renovating and planning approval, before upgrading the site in it's entirety, including the extension (extra rooms) buildings and the old staff quarters at the back of the main building 🙏. I pray this is what will happen as this hotel is in the most beautiful location overlooking the sea to Weymouth Bay. It is an art deco masterpiece that ideally must be preserved for holiday makers. The Riviera Hotel was fully booked in 1984 and it had fantastic cabaret acts and shows and competitions etc. Skittles and sports on the manicured lawns too 🙏. Fingers and toes crossed it will be brought back better than ever 🙏🙏

We stopped there after it was pontins on a turkey and tinsel a few years ago

What a waste. People used to have good holidays there, and they could still be using the site, I suppose the building is going to be left to rot, such a shame.

Lovely beach

I grew up in Weston super Mare, and I hated that beach. We went for a day trip to Weymouth and the beach was a hundred times better than Weston. I had the pleasure of driving to Weymouth a few decades ago as an adult and coming from the West Country the drive is superb and getting into Weymouth is even better. The only other sea side town that I would live in.
