In this Track #2 of The Soundtrack of Piano, we are located in Warsaw, Poland. I have the pleasure to share what felt like a very short talk with Luca Fazioli. We speak about pianos, about the relationships between musicians and their instruments, what piano ma...

Recording Session “Manhattan Unplugged” by Martín García García. Recorded at the Yardley Penthouse in Union City, NJ in April 18th, 2024. Here I tackle the famous “Minute Waltz”, which, funnily, lasts two minutes. This Waltz is said to have been composed by Chopin when he got inspired by the running and wagging of the tail of a very playful puppy dog. Shoutout to Mark Travis for his video recor...

Thank You for having chosen to launch this cultural initiative in the rhythm of a virtuoso many of us, avid listeners, but not specifically active members in the world of music, discovered at the occasion of the last Chopin International Piano Competition. Since then I have listened to countless hours of piano playing by Hayato Sumino, of which many when he performs under his alias of Cateen. Wishing you much success with your Track 'The Soundtrack of Piano, cultural 'magazine' on sounds of the Music world.

I think Hayato’s you tube performances really answer your question about making classical music accessible. From Joe Hisaishi gorgeous anime compositions to pop and jazz music, he creates many entrances to the classical experience. Sometimes he is able to weave beautiful tapestries incorporating tunes from different genres. I think that’s one of his really unique and special contributions.

Thank you so much for starting this inspiring format. Being a composer and writer for classical music and other genres myself, I can relate to a lot of your thoughts, feelings and also struggles you were talking about. Actually, I would love to add one question which seems to be an important one. And this is about the sound of piano in recordings and how it relates to genres nowadays. I mean in terms of traditional classical, neo-classical or modern classical or anything in between. A big part in music nowadays is production, even in composition where I feel the most important still should be melody and harmonies. Interestingly, the latest Album of Sumino on Sony Music sounds so different from his earlier releases too, as if it was meant to build a bridge between the traditional and neoclassical sound. Yeah, times are changing, always, as you mentioned correctly as well. It was very interesting and inspiring to listen to both of you! And by the way, I love good food too 😂. If you ever happen to be in Hamburg, Germany at the same time I would like to invite both of you for dinner to talk about music over good food! I am serious! All the best to you and your musical journey and I am looking forward to the next episode here! - Martin

It is exciting to follow his career and see the way he's drawing in a whole new audience. If something profoundly unique is to be created, it seems it will require a new connection to the listener. Gershwin's music did this, tapping into the energy of his times. I hope Cateen will find what he's seeking in his own compositions and very much look forward to hearing more from him!

Thank you for this interesting conversation! I resonate with your (combined) statement of looking inside for your unique expression, and not to the outside. Researching what has been done in the past, digesting and engaging with it on a personal level and then being present with yourself to explore how you feel and how you can add your unique understanding and voice to the world/ outside. It also feels like the preference of shorter music, or background noise, is a symptom of how ready we are, in the moment or as a person, to be present with ourselves and going deeper with what is important to us. As background noise, music either reflects or shapes our underlying emotion(s) subconsciously. So in taking the time and interest in allowing space for exploration, I believe we can learn a lot about our values, state of being and desires. But then, not everyone wants to or feels they can take the luxury of spending time with philosophical thinking. For me, this is one of the greatest pleasures and privileges.

❤😊 great idea ❤Sumino is absolutely right when he says that in these new "modern times" people listen to shortened versions of music more and more! Like, there is no time to listen to some maybe shorter concerts or, God forbid, some piece of classical music that lasts longer than 30 minutes! Classical music needs time, atmosphere (environment) and an instantly "adjusted" soul so that a person can really relax and enjoy such music. I think we could all do it, but most people have either become too lazy or have failed spiritually - emotionally. However, there will always be an audience for good music. In this case it is classical music which I prefer because it gives so much pleasure that no other genre can. (my observation)
