Burnouts and Launches From the 2023 Wally Parks Nostalgia Nationals
I got his autograph at the 1979 Fall National's at SIR Seattle Wa.
BigDaddy Blasted it!!!😂
You have to love that cackle!
He was the last of the hands-on drag racers who were involved with every aspect of their car
I had one of those in a 17' flat bottomed drag boat. The motor was heavier than the boat. Probably a 9 second boat. It would rock the trailer in a rather threatening manner.
THAT'S MUSIC TO MY EARS
Gator Nationals late 60's big fan of BIG DADDY!!!!
We visited his museum several years ago. It was just past Thanksgiving so they had some Christmas items in the gift shop. We bought some things and were checking out. When I looked up Big Daddy himself was bagging up our stuff. I was in disbelief. I turned to my wife and asked if she knew who this was. He reached across and shook her hand introducing himself. He simply said “Hello Ma’am, I’m Don Garlits”. Always a legend and considering his success and contributions to drag racing, the greatest of all time…ever.
what a go Garlit,,, Don,,, i remember reading a book on Don back in the 50s or early 60s he blew the engine on his race car,, just a regular v8,, so guess what he did ya,, his station wagon had a v8 hemi in it ,,he pulled it out ran and won the race ever since he used hemi s yes
Don vs Tom back in the day was a thing of greatness.
Brings back memories 😅
Runs great. 🎉
Legend 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Big Daddy Don Garlits will always be the Number One driver and race car building of the world to me.
I was only 10 & 11, but my Uncle and I took a cooler and drove four hours to the Indy Nationals in 64 & 65. We slept in the car so we could afford the pit passes. Big Daddy Don Garlits and the Swamp Rat were there both times. So was Grumpy Jenkins, Jungle Jim, The Ram Chargers, Little Red Wagon and Linda Vahn The Golden Girl. What great, tiring and satisfying weekends those were. Now I’m bald and look like him. Haha
Still waiting for the golf cart burnout.
That thing sounds wickedly menacing.
Wow look at that beast race cars have come a long way. But you got to Respect anyone driver racing Back then much Respect
Don was the best of all time in Drag racing with the swamp rat with the baddest Hemi around
92 years old, January 14, 1932
Man this make me feel good :)
392 CID 1 zillion HP.
I am honored to say that I have met him and watched him race. They don't call him "BIG DADDY" for nothing. A true legend.
Could have givin us at least one old fashion burn out ! Geeesh don !😂❤
A True Legend......So good to hear his health is better....
I would Imagine even In 90s the reason He did Not take It out for a run because He only runs rear engine dragsters
The one and only.
One of the greatest ever! I was lucky enough to meet him a few years ago and he was just like talking to one of your best friends! Great Man!!!!!
Saying this man is a legend does not cover it!!!
Brave a f, too, having that engine in the front. Kaboom.....💀
That's so awesome Are used to watch him race at the fremont drag strip
Going to visit his museum in late Oct or early Nov. The GOAT
NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACMENT
Magicar on "the can"!!! Thanks Bill!!
Great interview! I'd seen a lot about Joe drag racing but didn't know anything about him personally. A stand-up guy. I'm curious whether how that big an engine gets cooled. I assume it has a water jacket. Must be a huge radiator. A beautiful car. Thanks!!!
God bless Don Garlits and Chrysler. Garlits was first to supercharge and nitro the hemi, which is still the foundation of today’s top fuelers. “Ground breaking” is so understated. Formulas change, but the building blocks remain. Met him first at Lyons, along with Bill ‘Maverick’ Golden. Been fevered ever since.
One of my first drag races I seen was at the gator nationals many, many years ago when garlits raced Shirley muldowney in her pink rail
The GOAT of drag racing .
He so wants to take for a rip but just has to sit there...
Bad azz!
I'm 7:13 into the video and saw a comment explaining the OCIR picture. I was a real SS&DI and ND geek at 15-16 and: • Graham won the first leg of the PDA at SIR • Rob Bruins over Garlits at Fremont in the Petersen and Fitz Oly 417 (National Dragster) SS&DI Article: "Shootout At The OC Corral" Lead picture is Graham against Shirley at night, and although the final was Beck/Moitoza (guess who won) the article mentioned that Graham was the overall Series Champion for a $5000 bonus. I'm from Lions as a kid, and went to SIR a lot on the late 70s, and didn't see M.G. until he went to a Milodon, at the '79 Falls, then the 1980 Fallnationals final against Shirley. I also saw the TR-3 car at the '81 OCIR Finals, and Graham's last go in the Fisher's Fever TF at the '82 Winters. And yeah, Heart Like A Wheel. Sure would have liked to have seen the 417 car at SIR, though, but I was just 15.
This man was legend when I was 10 years old, 70 now, and he's still showing his stuff. good run Don
Good job!
I have many fond memories of watching this man at Detroit Dragway on Sunday’s. Always loved watching the Swamp Rat tearing up the strip.
Amen
There Americana
I watched him race in 1959 biloxi. Ms I am 82 now big Daddy Don 👍
Large Father you Rock
another great interview Randy. Still love to see you interview Jerry Ruth or Bruce Larson
Oh man, that sure takes me back! Those were amazing days on the ol' 1/4 mile, for me, OCIR. I remember seeing Don, Dave Beebe and the rest. I loved the old open face helmets and fireproof masks with the round breathers they wore, just phenomenal times. Willy's were everywhere, the Little Red Wagon, the Backup Pickup, yeah, I'm pretty old!
