Hello. Do you mean how the dog take the correct way on the track(forward/backward) or how the dog doing the track itself? But the track itself: I have different way to learn the dog, depends of the dog and what you shall use it to. But shortly, I want the dog to really own the track, so in the beginning I have a reward( ball/kong) buried just the dog can’t see it before he is right above, but not covered down after just 5-6 meter. I reward and play with it good, before I start again the tracking…but again after just 4-8 meter a new ball/kong is buried. I start again, and after max 10 meter a new ball/kong is buried down. End of first track I always in a period have 2 to 3 of these as mentioned above in the start of every track. So after track 3 or so, I still have 2 buried, then maybe 15-20 meter with nothing before 2 buried ball again( maybe I stop with the first). Here the dog expect ro find it quickly, so he still have a good intensity down to the ground…and not every to he’s feet😊 Next is small part of the ball/kong, but now I start pressing my hands over it so I put a smell of human being at the kong/ground. When the dog search an I just see a twitch in his head…around the small part of ball/kong, then I know he smell a difference from the track itself..and I very quickly throw a ball from behind, so before the dog understand what happen, the ball comes rapidly and he hunt it. I go furter on and then he find the ball buried down. After just 10-15 track I more and more use smaller part of ball/kong, but always use my hand to set smell from human. After 3 week, I start hard tracking, but now I use 2 cm of black electrical tape, and important…still press my hand over it. The dog can not se this, but I reward it rapidly with a ball thrown from behind( or a good college). All my dogs ending up more or less the same after a while training. And…my thoughts are, learn it in this way in the beginning then the dog have this basic, even if you later have to more or less run after a criminal. The less missing of the track, the quicker you catch the criminal😬

I learn the dog to use high intensity in inning his noes, and reward in the beginning exact moment he recognize the smell(small part of a Kong). After a while when he understand it, and loves the very good reward...I can let him work for a longer and longer time with high drive. Of course, sometime he get it quickly also😊.

This hard surface tracking is about 20 minutes old. 😊

I’m not using food at all, I start on grass with a good footsteps 20x20 cm….make good footprint about 5 meter and digg a small hole were I put the ball/kong. I do not cover it, but shall not be seen before the dog find it. I go further 3-7 meter and make a new hole…then one more time. I go immediately and pick up the dog, go slowly to the start and see if it is a interesting smell…hopefully the dog find the smell interesting and follow the good track until he/she find the ball. Having a good reward, and try to start again…do the same one more time. All tracks now have a ball digger down after max 4-5 meter…also have 2-3 after each other …then nothing for 15-20 meter or so, and then also 2-3 balls again. So comes the next step were I use small parts of ball/Kong, with a good hand pressed over the small part so it make human smell. From now I reward imidiately when then dog reacts 1/10 seconds, do not need to find it now, just reward good. This was a very very short explanation. Go to hard surface after some weeks. I have methods that works on many dogs, and they will own the track and nothings other matters. Well, short short explanation, hope you get it Oddmund

You know you are getting close when they poison your Dogs My wife and i have trained Bloodhounds for Human Scent Discrimination for over 30 years. Our last bloodhound AU, her oldest recorded successful trail about 10km/ 6 miles long. Au's Oldest recorded successful trail almost 10 days old. We have had successful trained Bloodhound scenarios with targets leaving scenes going to a bus stop riding the bus for about a mile and then getting off the bus and walking about 1/2 mile that were documented successful trails. About 20 years ago my wife and i had the first RCMP validated SAR Bloodhound in British Columbia Canada, his name was Marley, Marley was poisoned right in our backyard (Victoria BC), Marley survived and past about 18 months later from an aggressive form of nose cancer. The very next night after Marley was poisoned i saw a man hanging out by the corner of our house at the trail that leads to the park beside the house, I walked out to him and told him the about our Bloodhound that had been poisoned the night before, the man standing with a baseball cap, old school FBI style sunglasses, hoodie, the whole nine yards. He just stood their and told me anyone that trains their dog for human scent, should train them not to eat raw meat from a strangers hand. One of my thoughts was,I am sure glad my wife was not interviewing the guy that poisoned her dog. About 20 years ago my wife and i were both given the opportunity to train Bloodhounds with the FBI, they have an extensive training program that uses Bloodhounds for tracking Serial killers. FBI Bloodhound fun fact, Farthest recorded successful air scent about 6 miles from the target. The best of the best Bloodhound fun facts, you can train Bloodhound for drop trailing, get a direction of trail, throw the Bloodhound in the car, pull the dog out at intersection, no matter country or interstate intersection get a direction of travel, rinse and repeat, the Farthest recorded successful Drop trail is over 300 miles long(from a child abduction case). Training Bloodhounds with the FBI, high light of my life.

It`s not easy to explain short, but I use a ball that I dig down in short grass, so you just can see it from above....after 3 meter, after 6 and 15 meter and stop. Next time 7, 10, 20 and stop. Next 2,8, 12 stop... after a short while the dog think the ball lives down there. Then use small part from the ball, and throw a ball as a big reward from behind down to the small part before the dog know what happen.... when he just suction the small part. So I make the dog very intense and in the beginning not long tracks, but after a few week a can go few hundreds meter. So I go to hard surface, but use black electrical tape, and do the same. Well, this is just a short short explanation, I have a lot of thoughts and experience that I use in seminar for instruction...make the ball be the biggest thing in the world, how I give the dog trust, good feelings, be honest, have good mood, simply tell how these things are linked together. Some Bloodhound fun facts. The FBI studied the Bloodhound back in the 1980's for 8 years. The FBI train their Bloodhounds for 5 years before they are used in the field, even then the agents are not told if it is a real gig or not and the Bloodhound gets three kicks at the can to pass for the best of the best to be used to track serial killers. Bloodhounds were proven to have the ability to be able to scent discriminate 1 particle out of a trillion. Bloodhounds were proven to be able to pick up scent off of incendiary devices even with the bomb maker gloved up. Bloodhounds were shown to be able to pick up sent from handled bullets that were fired from a gun then used as scent articles that were used to ID the person in a line up of people. The FBI Bloodhound programs are kept out of the courts and the media.
