An Improved Slabbing Router Setup
I had several large pieces of greenwood that have finished seasoning in the workshop that need milling into usable timber, so a substantial slabbing router jig was necessary.
The components used in this jig all home made to be multi-purpose, the aluminium rails can be re-used in my Alaskan sawmill chainsaw attachment and the router carrier is used in a fretboard radius jig.

Making a solid mould for the 1550 Hans Frei Warwick Lute
Просмотров 8 тыс.3 года назад
For my previous lutes I used a simple build mould that was not solid, it works fine but I thought I would make a new solid mould to see how that helps build up the bowl of the lute and keep faithful to the shape of the original instrument. The shape of lute bowls are more complex than they appear, every curve is compound, not radial so the the final shape of the lute is as if it has been squash...

A 90 Pound Yew Longbow on the Tillering Tree
Просмотров 563 года назад
A clip of an early stage of a longbow being made from one piece of Yew, being drawn on the tillering tree. This clearly shows how the bows that are made from one piece of wood - called "self bows" - follow the growth rings and grain direction in order to maintain the full integrity and strength of the wood fibres.

Tillering and English Longbow

Showing how a laminated English longbow is drawn, checked, adjusted and checked again to make sure that it curves smoothly along its entire length with no flat spots of "hinges". it clearly shows how an "English" longbow bends through the handle but that when properly tillered there is no "hand shock" when shooting the bow. The bow is drawn on a home made device called a "tillering tree" so tha...
Making a Laminated English Longbow Stave

Tapering and gluing the laminates for a modern" English longbow". An "English longbow" is a bow that is at least 4 inches taller than the archer and when drawn bends throughout the whole length of the bow. The handle is not rigid so it bends too so the bowyer makes sure the bow is properly balanced, or "tillered" ,then there is no hand shock. That is the same as the historic English longbows ma...

How does one go about learning to become a luthier? When I was five years old I had three goals: Build a ship. Sail to Tahiti. And learn to play the lute. I did not know about the theorbo back then. I feel I am too old to build an 80 foot sailboat. Tahiti is no longer what I had heard about as a kid. But I can still learn to play. The only way I can afford to get a theorbo is to learn to build one. I have my contrabass canjo as my first experimental musical instrument. I bought a used Bass amp from the junk store. My canjo sounds great on it. I have tuned to low A. Right now I am waiting for paint to dry, so that I can put a preamp into a wooden box. I am reading everything I can find on violin making and will soon start on a cigar box violin kit I bought. After that I plan to crave the body of a bass rebec out of some mulberry I set back two years ago Some of my dreams are old, old but I am happy to say I have found a place in my life where I can start reaching out and doing something about them.

This was super helpful, thanks for uploading it! Could I ask: where did you get dimensions for the 1550 Hans Frei lute and did you use any special software to draw up the intersecting planes that form your mould skeleton? Much appreciated!
