2.5 Mile-Wide Tornado - Hallam, Nebraska F4 - May 22, 2004
On May 22, 2004, a powerful tornado developed in southeast Nebraska near the town of Daykin. The tornado grew to mammoth proportions: at its largest, the tornado path was measured at 2.5 miles in diameter. On the ground for over two hours and 52 miles, it hit the small hamlet of Hallam near dark (~8:39 pm). This is my view of that storm.

    To get a worst case tornado that would travel a continuous 100 miles, be 2 miles wide, have a pressure differential of 150mb, winds as high as 350 mph , and move a straight northeastward track then what would the STP parameters look like to get that going? Also what would the hodograph look like of that impending worst case tornado?

    Worthy footage of a beast that was almost forgotten. In another video I commented on the many similarities between El Reno 2013 and this storm, now with the extra footage I am even more frightened by what I see. The Hallam supercell is also massive, with that extended meso like a plank or surfboard and underneath lies the amorphous monster with multiple vortices.

    This reminded me of the memorial day tornado outbreak 2019. That was unexpected a few hours that it happened and Ohio was warned that a tornado outbreak is expected in western Ohio, hours before it happened and it happened between 10pm and 1am from Dayton especially and to the Hocking Hills had tornado warnings. So, now we need to especially to ALWAYS be prepared for such when a low risk of severe weather will be issued, now that the atmosphere is unpredictable suddenly or weather metrogists need to be actually sure that a tornado outbreak will happen at the actually regions in states or are they predictors of what the weather will be later or tonight or the next day??? It's so scary now . A lot of people are blaming weather metrogists for not being sure and not predicting a tornado outbreak or are severe weather outbreaks happen suddenly without warning? Even happens with winter storms. Heavy snow happened in central Ohio and an hour later a winter weather advisory was issued and then a Winter Storm warning.

    I was reading a lot of ILN forecast discussion through the day (a Cbus native) and I was expecting some gusty storms, folks there were expecting some instability and I wasn’t expecting tornados, then I saw the watch. Things changed so fast. What is confusing me as a hobbyist, is this is the second event that OH and IN had with tornados in early March. This part of the country does not get this weather this time of year (we get events in late May-June with derecho and squall season following), this season does not bode well for east-Midwest natives.

    Appreciated this video a ton! The under-forecasted instability and shear were both big factors I think. I am just a casual hobbyist who lives in the area and all day I had a weird feeling about storms, I texted my boyfriend at 10 AM that it felt like a wet napkin outside and it never went away even after the afternoon round of storms came through briefly which was much weaker than anticipated so it didn't zap the atmosphere or cool temps/dew points too much so they were still ripe as things got crazy. Seemed to maybe be removed from the strongest forcing as well leading to more discrete cells that were getting stronger right as the LLJ got stronger too. Just an insane night, I couldn't believe my eyes staring at radar all night.

    • @wxgabe
      @wxgabe 10 месяцев назад
