I am sure you are upset, but did you know that each United Way is independently operated? They each have their own board, CEO and finance team. I am really sorry to hear that you had to experience that, I cannot imagine. Just understand that each location is completely different from another and it may not be this particular United Way you are angry with. They do not own vehicles and do not have a truck at this location for certain. Most UW's do not have fleet vehicles and UW's do not normally help individuals directly, but rather through services and agencies that can help. As a long time supporter of this particular UW, I am sure that you may be confusing them with another, and I am more sure that a phone call or meeting with them in the Albany NY location would help ease your anger and understanding. We have received numerous posts about our funding an organization called the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC). We do not fund NVIC and never have. Even if this organization applied for funding, we would not be able to consider it, as the agency does not have a local chapter in the five-county region surrounding Albany, NY. The United Way system includes more than 1,300 community-based United Way organizations in the United States and around the world. Our United Way chapter, United Way of the Greater Capital Region in Albany, NY is independent, separately incorporated, and locally governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. There are several United Ways across the United States with the word “capital” in their name. Perhaps this caused the confusion. These United Ways, while similar in name, are also independent and locally governed. They make funding decisions based on their particular community’s needs. They are incorporated in different states and have different funding strategies. Many United Ways also allow donors to designate their contribution to an individual charity of their choice, outside the category of programs that are reviewed by United Way and selected as “United Way funded partners.” Again, United Way of the Greater Capital Region in Albany, NY does not fund and has never funded the National Vaccine Information Center. We also have not removed any posts from our Facebook wall. Perhaps individuals who are posting to other United Ways’ Facebook pages are not seeing their messages here, on our local United Way page. United Way of the Greater Capital Region’s list of funded programs and IRS 990 filing is available on our website, www.unitedwaygcr.org. We ask that individuals who are commenting on issues related to the NVIC make sure their messages are directed appropriately, not to our organization which has never funded NVIC.
