Living a creative life outdoors (and in a van) with dogs.
Wildheart. Lover of wild places & the more-than-human. Photographer, writer, dog trainer, backpacker, van dweller, aspiring filmmaker. My trail name is "Love Dogs," after my favorite poem by Rumi and my proclivity for canines.
After completing The Colorado Trail in 2023, after seven years of segment hiking it with my dogs, I re-committed to living life on my own terms, circling back to what's always been most important to me: wild places, creative expression, and dogs. I made a goal to buy an old van and hit the road with my dogs by the time I turn 50 (2026) and ended up reaching that goal sooner than anticipated (2024). The dogs and I now live full-time in a 1995 Dodge Ram B2500, and I'm embracing online platforms like RUclips, Substack, and Patreon to travel, create, and share outdoor/wilderness experiences with others.

What’s In My Camera Bag (2024 Edition) - Nature and Landscape Photography
I don't really discuss photography in a lot of detail on my channel, but if that's something you're interested in, please let me know. This was a good topic to discuss while we're still without the van, as I have my camera bag with me, and the little "bar" in this RV we're renting made for a lovely background for such a topic.

Hi! Great review! I'm from the Patagonia in Argentina and it's very windy arround here. What's your opinion in the wind resistance? You think that the poles can handle a 30/35 mph wind? Thanks!
@@Kalimanjao Hi. Thanks for watching. I’ve had it in 30mph winds before and as long as it’s fully tied and staked down and connected to a vehicle, it can handle a lot. It was the rain that always concerned me. Not the best rain fly coverage, imo. Light rain is fine though.
👏🇧🇷👍
When I was young, we would spend time at Orange Beach. Our families had homes over there. We loved being with our great aunt and uncle. And would beg to stay with them.Every morning, we would have breakfast and pack lunches and take the boat over to Eagles' nest. We would swim around the boat. Our aunt and uncle would have binoculars out checking on the Eagles, and fingers crossed, they would have hatchlings. They would play cards, read, and still watch the nest. We would have lunch watch a little more and go back and get dinner ready. That seems like a lifetime ago. But wonderful times with them. And miss them very much.
Sounds wonderful. I’m glad you have those memories.
Lots of room to zoom, best friends, and loved well. They are living the dream. Thanks for sharing.
Go Chiefs! Nice video folks. Loved the pickin’ and the corn picking.
Thanks for watching!
God sure knows what he is doing. 😊
Just wondering if this farm is your livelihood or just a hobby?? I’ve seen plenty of farming videos but never where they make designs in the corn. I guess as long as it’s all harvested that’s what counts. 😁
@@SteveSanders-SPB-FL It’s not my farm. It’s a local farmer in the small town where I grew up.
I loved it, the combine operator seemed to be having a lot of fun. Great video.
I found that the Atlas Adventure Camera Backpack is great for multi days backpacking. The Athlete Camera Backpack is good for a day backpacking.
Interesting. I’ve never heard of the Atlas Adventure. Thanks.
I think if it stops and you bought new they should send new or give you back part of your money as refurbished cheaper I’m sure I’m looking at buying one but for extreme temps I hope it will work that’s huge in the van. What did you use to wrap the exhaust hose?
I'm honestly not sure I could recommend the Wave 2 for extreme temps at this point. Too unreliable, and I'm now considering a split a/c. Or a higher BTU rooftop unit. Not sure yet. That said, I haven't used the refurb unit much yet, as my van's been in the shop for the last 4 weeks. So we'll see if the replacement is any better. The wrap is an insulated a/c hose cover.
@@lovedogsontheloose hope things work out for you
@@TinyHomeCookingwithSherlei Thanks. Same to you!
For stripped or broken hex heads Use a Powerbuilt hex head metric socket set. Makes things much better.
Thanks! Will look into it.

Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Bummer about the transmission. I'm curious, how many miles did it have on it? Bringfido is awesome! Thanks for the suggestion. I have a feeling it will come in handy!
161k miles on original tranny at time of death. :)
That's a fancy shower room. I have one of the pop up showers. Works okay but not a lot of room. Hard as hell to get it to "pop down." 😅
@@MtnWanderer-TieDye- oh, I know! I used one of those as a changing room for outdoor photo sessions for awhile. It took me forever to figure out how to get it “folded” back in on itself.
The opening of this video is so beautiful, both the imagery and the words spoken.
Thank you. That means a lot. ♡
Thank you for that - Ive just ordered these poles
Glad to help!
Quite the unexpected adventure. Thanks for the tip about bringFido!
Yes indeed. And you're welcome! It's a resource I've always known about but rarely use since we typically avoid hotels and such. Came in handy for this "adventure" for sure.

Silly design fault! How on earth did they miss that? 😂
Dan explains his logic here in the comments, and it does make sense given the target audience for these pro version tents. I’ve found it easy enough to operate once I figured out what I need to do, but it’s worth making note of.
Great video. I was confused between this and the TRIKOS leash made by ray allen and then I chose the TRIKOS leash because it’s biothane. It doesn’t get scraped like this nylon version and it’s completely odor proof and waterproof so it’s a bonus. The only downside is that it doesn’t have a handle, but the TRIKOS one is better.
Yeah, the biothane leashes are really great, too., and I may eventually try to go that route, but so far I’ve been unwilling to give up my bar tacked loops along the length of the nylon leashes. I get a lot of use out of those, particularly when backpacking. Wish there was a way to do that with biothane.
Nice, enjoyed your review. Question - do you know if you can close the rear hatch of the SUV while the tent is installed? For instance if I wanted to shut the hatch due to excessive rain/wind/cold or perhaps due to wild animals on site or sketchy neighbors, etc. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Yes! You absolutely can close the hatch of the vehicle while the tent is attached. I did this often, especially in colder weather.
I wonder why they decreased the capacity on the canyon series.
I’m not sure unless it just fit the design change better. The saddle bags are now sewn together instead of being individual bags that are attached to the harness separately. I’d bet that played a role in the limitation a little bit.
@@lovedogsontheloose I do like that it's one piece now. It looks like it's a lot easier to put on than the Ruffwear Palisades pack. That thing is kind of a pain, but I like it on Long hikes because it holds more than any backpack I've seen on the market.
@@Earthpet711 I'm fairly indifferent to the one-piece design right now, though once I get the packs out on a real backpacking trip--fully packed--I'll likely have a stronger opinion one way or the other.
I'm guessing that you weren't able to make your trip in August I hope you still plan to update us. I placed an order for them tonight so I'm really interested
Definitely still planning to do an update about these. Life had other plans for me this backpacking season, unfortunately. I do already wish the saddle bags were bigger.
@@lovedogsontheloose you might like the Utimate Direction V2 dog vest. It expands from 7.2 l to 8.6 l.
Oh cool! I didn’t know UD made a dog pack. I’ll take a look at it and maybe add that to my series of tests and comparisons. Thanks for the tip!
@@lovedogsontheloose I'm really thrilled that I was able to help you. Of course that pales in comparison to how helpful your videos have been thank you!
@@Earthpet711 That's a wonderful compliment! Thank you! I'm so glad they've been helpful.
What did your dogs carry in their packs?
Sorry, for some reason I’m just seeing this comment. They carry their own food, or as much of it as they can each safely carry, depending on the length of trip.
Thank you.
Those look like Ombraz sunglasses. Nice! I just got the Viales.
@@Earthpet711 Yes! They’re the Classics. I really like them.
Thank you.
@@Earthpet711 You’re welcome!

Thank you so much!
New Subscriber. Those tents look great. Are you happy with them. They look like they give you a nice shade.
Thanks for the comment! The Napier served the dogs and me really well, but I sold it when I got my van because I didn't think I'd need it. Six months later I've started wishing I'd kept it to try with the barn doors on the back or side of the van. I was incredibly happy with that tent. The Kelty is fine for added privacy but I found I didn't really use it as often as I thought I would, since it isn't secure for the dogs. Each of those tents serves a different purpose, I think, and does it well. The Kelty does now have a version that's DAC poles instead of fiberglass, I believe, which I think would be a definite worthwhile upgrade. I hated the fiberglass poles. :)
@@lovedogsontheloose Thank you. 😊
@@JCGible You're welcome!
This is a very helpful video. I’m quite tired of buying leashes with hardware that fails and tired of shopping for truly high-quality ones bc there is so much stuff on the market for dogs to sift through. I recently learned about Ray Allen but wanted an independent review before purchasing. Thanks so much for your high-quality (sound and visuals), informative, and detailed review!
I'm glad you found it helpful. I'm a huge fan of RAM gear.

"Always returning". Beautifully made video ❤.
Thanks, Sue. I appreciate it.
The tragic breakdown aside, this is so beautifully made video. The music selection is amplifying the feelings, emotions, and overall dramaturgy of unfolding events. Such serious malfunction felt even worse being preceded by peaceful time in beautiful places. Hope that the repair is possible for St. Guinevere - have to catch up on your blog.
Thank you! I'm trying to improve my cinematic storytelling, so that means a lot. :)
Also, it took me awhile before I could actually put together a video about the van breaking down. Usually when I'm stressed, my artistic creativity is the first thing to go. I'm trying to lean into it more.
@@lovedogsontheloosetotally make sense to take time to digest, differentiates the art of sharing personal experience from simple info dumping.
There’s not much chance of my getting any sleep knowing my vehicle was parked out on the highway. I like that poop container on the van. I need one of those to place on the wall of my truck bed instead of just tossing the bag in the bed.
I definitely didn't sleep well. The poop container is the Kurgo "Tailgate Dumpster." Would work great in the bed of a truck. I read somewhere that it's not intended to be left on (full) while driving, but I've been doing exactly that and it hasn't fallen off yet. *Edited to add: I do take it off when it's empty/not in use.
