Josephine Baker is said to have been related to Apalachee Native Americans through her mother Carrie McDonald. However, that could be a lie because Carrie McDonald was adopted by former slaves who were biracials of African and Native American ancestry. Josephine's father was said to have been a White man whose family were European immigrants from Germany. Also, Carrie gave birth to Josephine at a Whites only hospital.

I grew up in South Carolina in the fifties and sixties. At the time, Black people were not admitted to most colleges and universities, and in many, Jews were not allowed in, either. It took a long time for change to come.

Great! video. I am glad that Anita Hemmings was able to get her diploma and make something of herself. The law was the law back in the 1890's. This woman just wanted an education she wasn't trying to act white.

There is a book of fiction based on her life by Karen Tanabe, I believe. It came out in 2016 or 2017. I think it is named The Gilded Age.

How “white” did she have to be to claim the “right” to live as a white woman. She looks white(Caucasian).

Lol, she was partially black and the black dna was diluted. She wasn't passing for white, she basically was white and had black ancestry. If she did a dna test she would have been predominantly white. She is expressing white dna, she aint 'passing' for white she simply is white. It is like saying a dark haired person with a blonde grandparent is 'passing' for being dark haired.😂😂

First of all,she isn’t “Black”.. She is mixed race.. And she has more European “white” DNA than African.. She’s basically a white woman with straight hair..that’s why she “passed”. If she had looked black with kinky hair she wouldn’t have made it through the front door. So whats the problem with her choosing to be what she has most of..🧐In Latin America and the Caribbean she would be white.. end of story.

Anita Florence Hemmings later became a librarian and married a doctor named Andrew Love. Dr. Love was a Mulatto who passed for White. Dr. Love and Anita had one child, a daughter who was raised as White. A Woman (I think is named Julia Simms) revealed how she discovered her African American heritage shortly after her Grandmother's death in the mid 1990s. The woman's grandmother was the daughter of Dr. Andrew Love and Anita Florence Hemmings.

she is a relative on my grandmother's side the Fleet's...we were just invited to the kickoff exhibit for the 100 years celebration of the Morgan Library...interesting family stories over the years...we'd see sisters and brothers some brown skin and some very light...this story and the exhibit is amazing...still learning
