$20 Vibe (Johnny Law) - Beautiful People

Really, to my mind, the best song that Johnny Law (Brady & Erik) put together while under the moniker "$20 Vibe". This is a pretty good version of it too. Thanks to Dave Breaux who adds so much to the sound during this performance and this time period in general in the life of the band. Killing it on keys. Someone tell me who the bassist and drummer are!?

Johnny Law - "Promises" (Aquafest - July 26, 1990)

This is another song that only seems to have been played live during this period right prior to the release of their album. There may be another video version of it somewhere, but I have not seen. This Austin Aquafest gig is important in that a number of songs were captured here that would not appear in subsequent years as part of their set list for gigs.

The first song of theirs to ever be professionally recorded and released on an album. I forget the name of the compilation album that the song appeared on, but it was a compilation of several local Austin acts and was considered a real feather in your cap to make that album. It was also recorded again for their debut album. Song also appears in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. As popular as ...

One of the better live versions of this classic dating back to the days when Johnny Law was The Colours. Performed at the Austin Aquafest on July 26th, 1990. Aquafest was the precursor to the ACL Festival, and when SxSW was in its infancy. When clubs like The Steamboat, Black Cat, Joe's Generic Bar and Liberty Lunch still existed. Looks the same… it’s a shame… nothing has changed
No traffic 80s now always traffic
I was 8th years old Mahattan Bell Atlantic building and World Trade
52 yrs old, lived in both Sunnyside and Whitestone. Did that drive million times. Still sucks. Lol.
This was filmed on my 11th bday. 😊
Could you upload the continued footage, you were just about to pass through my exit : )
Wish I could, but it really does leave off there. As the road cleared and the speed picked up, I put the camera down for safety. Apologies. And thanks for watching and posting.
This is a hidden gem. Is it possible to feel nostalgic about a period of time you’ve never lived? In fact, I’m not even american, I’m from Argentina! and this video about your trip through New York during the early 90s really resonated with me. I visited the city 2 years ago and I loved it. It really was a cultural shock. I would love to live in NYC for some period of time, just to see what it feels like… I’m looking forward to it. By the way, how old were you that day and where are you living now?
Thanks for watching and for posting your comments. I appreciate them. I am glad that it resonated with you. I was 27, going on 28 that summer. My second year living in NYC. I learned a lot.
@@hughescreativeservicesllc3436 why did you stop living in NYC? I guess after some years some people need a break and they move to somewhere quieter
@@marcosromo 6 years and 3 months was enough. I was originally from Texas and life is pretty good in Texas. I knew that if I didn't leave NYC when I did, then I might not ever leave. In NYC, I could not see a way to owning a house, having a family with children. Not having to fight everyday just to do ordinary things. This doesn't matter so much when you are a man of 26 or 27, but when you are 38, or 44, or even 56, you do not want to look back with regret and wonder who will care for you in the future. Only family will. NYC was a great time in my life, but as I would explain to friends about NYC, going to the corner grocery store should not potentially be the most exciting and/or most difficult thing you will do in a day. In NYC it often was.
Hi there, I was the first to comment on this video. Today is 7-10-24, essentially the exact same date as this video. Out of sheer curiosity, at 1:30pm (the time you said roughly the video was filmed), I went to google maps and typed in both your starting point and ending point. The trip, according to Google, was 19 minutes; 5 minutes longer than it took you. However, Google assumes you go the speed limit; thus, realistically, it was probably 16 or 17 minutes. Goes to show you that, indeed, traffic is a bit worse today. Thought I'd pass this along; hope you're doing great wherever you are at!!
Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts and comments. I appreciate them. I'm hanging in there and I hope that you are well also. I rarely go the speed limit - but I don't think I was exceeding it that day!
13:44 they say about 180 cars per day were stolen in NYC
you could always buy a cheap car though, not like now
You know whats so appealing about this video? The fact that the narrative at the bottom makes me feel like im in the truck with you and you're shooting the shit with me about how it used to be 👍🏽🤣 I lived not too far off exit 35 westbound. Great vid btw
I remember growing up in the early 2000's when most cars on the road still looked like these and trucks/buses still had Dayton wheels.
Seems like yesterday, but I am now told that the year 2000 was more than twenty years ago. Shocking! Thanks for posting!
So there was a time when the BQE used to be divided into two separate spans for the two directions from the area where it crosses from Metropolitan Avenue to about halfway on the way to Queens?
In my day, it was always a divided freeway/expressway. Thanks for posting
@@hughescreativeservicesllc3436 That's not what I mean... What I meant was the section of the BQE from (going north/eastbound) Metropolitan Ave to about half way to Queens, had different spans for the directions before it got joined into one span? When I grew up (most of the 1990s/early 2000s) it was just one span the entire length of the elevated portion, so that means it got joined together in the mid 90s likely right? I was born in 1992.
@@robjackson5245 Sorry, there have been many who have spoken about the changes through the years, so I could not be sure. Thank you for posting and sharing your memories. Every night it haunts my dreams as I drive it again and again.

@@hughescreativeservicesllc3436 Thanks. I just was shocked about that.
What is Johnny Law second album called?
It was going to be called “jail house tattoo”. Unfortunately the label got cold feet and pulled the block. Go to my RUclips channel and you’ll find 15 of the 22 demo tracks that were being slated for that album. They are not polished or finished tracks, but I think you’ll get the sense of how great those songs could have been if they hadn’t pulled the rug out from under the band.
@@hughescreativeservicesllc3436 thanks so do I just type in Jail House Tattoo Demos? or Johnny Law Demos?
@@hughescreativeservicesllc3436 On Hughscreativeservice its called the lost album? That is all I have found is Johnny law the lost album is this what you're referring to as the Jail House tattoo album?

look how peaceful everyone was driving. using turn signals and driving the speed limit
very true. it was a big deal to speed back in those days. also most cars really didn't push past 60mph. now it's fucking nascar

Howdy! Always interesting how lives intersect, or at least parallel one another. Thanks for watching and posting and don't forget to get out to Robert Moses State Park.
What sticks out is how smooth the asphalt is. Roads crumble these days.
Because the same roads were newer 30 years ago lol
Maspeth Avenue Holders- 6:39 Remember those tanks from my childhood everytime going over the Kosciusko Bridge.
Take exit 33 (Humboldt street- 6:27) make a right. Take Humboldt street all the way until you hit Montrose Avenue. Then make a left. Go down 1 block and your at "Danny's Pizzeria" since 1983.
If I ever make it back, I will be sure to drop by!
There is something so interesting about looking back on the past, the way things used to be. I was not born until 2004 but it still seems so nostalgic or like what a time to be alive. Additionally, I never considered myself a city person, but I do live only an hour and a half from NYC, and the last couple times I went I started to realize why people enjoy it. Not that I would want to live in a small apartment for any period of my life, but visiting the city and just seeing everything going on is cool.
New York City is cool. A great place to live for a certain period of time in your life. Always a great place to visit. New Yorkers are good people and the city has a vibe that you cannot feel anywhere else. It will always be a part of me.
wheres the new video i want to know what happened

Funny I actually remember that roadwork around 10:40 on the drive thru that part into Queens. That work went on for a while!
It always does. And it isn't any different anywhere else in the country. The road work projects go on for years. It's a jobs program and we subsidize it with our time. And money.
1:04 waot hold up how tf are you not worried or were you actually? About the risk of collision or crashing etc by using the camcorder with driving?
It crossed my mind a couple of times, but as Alfred E. Neuman said, "What, Me Worry?" Life is too short not to be stupid once in a while!
Woah cool lol I was thinking of expressway as ,eaning a train but had not stopped tp realose well that involves non paved road but rather rail and track obviously... but yeah so that is neat though I forget the difference between freeway/expressway and highway too often to remember which is which ngl. 0:37 ooh fwiw I would feel it soo crazy terrifying to imagine the diffoculty both if in any big coty but also trying to find some place for one to park letalone store an autpmobile lmao maybe even for motorcycles etc..

Thanks for watching. Glad it brought back memories, hopefully all good.
I feel this the drive the story, the inflection, very good video.
Thanks for watching and posting your comments, I appreciate it.
Now it’s a parking lot
Take this route everyday for work
What time of day/ day of week was this? I drove from Flushing to Downtown Brooklyn every day for 37 years and I can’t remember traffic being this good, ever. Must be a morning reverse commute for you. At the time of your video, I had been doing it for ten years, with a clutch.
Late morning, probably around 11:30am, give or take. Tuesday. July 10th.
Same road except now people cut up at 150mph and whiteline
Thank you for this video very nostalgic
I still take this ride 2023
What a nice look and throwback. Thanks for the video. It's completely different now. If you did it today, it would be bumper to bumper traffic from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Kosciuszko Bridge. No matter what time of day, there is always insane traffic now because those neighborhoods are repopulated. It's worse than LA. Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Long Island City look like Dubai now with all of the fancy new high rises and condos all along the BQE. New Kosciuszko Bridge is fancier looking now too and all lit up at night. There is even talk and plans to move the BQE underground and tear down the Brooklyn Heights part. Amazing how it changed so much in over thirty years.
Thanks for filling me in on the details. Hard to imagine, as I have yet to see it. But I did hear and see some pics of LIC. Thanks for watching and posting your comments.
