    I hate driving through Palm desert/La Quinta and watching them just pump all that water into lawns, golf courses, and fountains. A damn shame

    So not an increasing human population using more water but agriculture is to blame? Got it.

    Simple Question: You never addressed... How do You or I, mainly Me, Kill the Dodder parasite plant????

  • @williampatrickfurey
    @williampatrickfurey Год назад

    Bury whole dragon fruits with leaf-cutter "ant-farms" for fast growing organic moisture absorbing ground cover in the barren desert(small seeds carried into fungal chambers with substrate). If poisonous harvester ants try to colonize, release horned toads/lizards; their defense mechanism depends on eating the harvester ants for their formic acid secretion, and they're possibly even able to distinguish between that and the leaf cutter ant's phenylacetic acid secretion, making this a release that possibly wraps itself up over time after the poisonous harvester ants are gone seeing as the horny toads/lizards have already been endangered at a time(likely eaten by predators when lacking formic acid from the harvester ants in their diet). I can explain why it should help save these trees if you want but I don't know if anyone will read this. Think about putting some mesquite seeds inside some of the whole dragonfruit also. Also, the leaf-cutter ant has defenses against parasitic fungus, a wonder of mine is if they'll defend against fallen mesquite bean pod's aflatoxins for whatever good reason.

    There is a third desert pupfish refugium at the Ranger Steve Bier Outdoor Learning Center on the Borrego Springs Middle School campus. It is the only refugium on a K-12 school campus in California. (There are two on K-12 campuses in Arizona.) The three refugia in Borrego are maintained under the auspices of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The refugium at the Middle School, in addition to providing an area where a threatened species is able to survive, serves an educational purpose for middle school students in science as well. -Dr. Arie Korporaal, President, Board of Education, Borrego Springs Unified School District, akorporaal@bsusd.net.

    Great explanation. The current administration is destroying much of the environmental progress that has been made to date. This at a time when we need to be taking giant steps forward towards addressing our pressing concerns. The development of more golf courses in an area that already has 120 is an excellent example of the blind greed that fuels this type of so called ‘progress ‘. ~ The Endangered Species Act is a powerful tool to not only protect the designated plants and animals, but to simultaneously conserve habitats and whole ecosystems. I’ve let my congressperson, etc., know that I expect them to not only protect the act as it currently stands, but to also be bold in tackling the local and global environmental issues facing us. ~ Looking forward to more presentations of this type. Thanks.

      Just as a follow-up, the wildflowers are everywhere up to 2000-ish ft of elevation. Freeway off/onramps have them all over the place. It's crazy how widespread they are. I left JTNP at 5:30AM at the south entrance, and just outside the park and all over I-8, they are everywhere as well.

    I was fortunate enough to be working out in Indio 2 years ago for the incredible bloom then and spent many hours in the park. How would you compare this year's bloom so far to 2017? I'm curious because I live in Utah and am really considering taking another trip out there for a couple days or so in the next week or two. It certainly doesn't look disappointing, by any means, but I was blessed to be working out there for such an incredible year that I think my standards have been set a bit higher than they should be :)

    Hi there! Thanks for the information. Personally, I think golf courses should either be shut down or very heavily taxed. Anyway, I am thinking about moving to the desert and was wondering if it might be possible to use mesquites as an alternative to drilling a well. Birch and maple are excellent sources of water, and with the mesquite’s ability to reach the aquifers with such deep taproots, I don’t understand why this hasn’t been thought of before. I’ve seen videos of water gushing from mesquites after limbs are cut off. I don’t want to cut limbs off them, but I believe tapping them might yield a gallon or more of clean water every day per tree. Sure beats paying to dig a well if it works! Am I missing something?

    Thanks Mark...we currently are looking at 3 different ways to prove these mesquites deserve to be included as groundwater dependent ecosystems in the GSP. Through data gathering, by recording live mesquites into Calflora.org. By NDVI satellite images, and by possibly using isotope analysis.
