Hi, I'm Cassie! I love to play viola, teach music, and run with my pup Orlie (she's the cutest Samoyed you'll ever meet!). I have a doctorate in viola performance from the University of Maryland and have taught strings for the last 20 years in colleges, public and private schools, and privately in my own studio.
I live for those "lightbulb" moments, and believe that everyone is capable of playing an instrument.

Thank you so much for these videos! Sorry this is late, but this actually helped me shift for my Christmas concert i had on Tuesday, which was a success. Thank you again 😁
I'm trying to tune my A string and the tuner is reading f#, what am I doing wrong?
If it's reading F# it's too low. If you're comfortable using the pegs, I would recommend VERY slowly turning the peg away from you to bring the pitch up. F# is about a third too low!
thank you!
Thanks so much for these videos! I just started taking viola classes 3 months ago, and I am loving it! However, I bought a cheap viola off the internet to begin with, and it turned out to be smaller than advertised. I live in the Chicago area, but the stores I've seen around here don't have any violas in my price point. Do you have any instrument suggestions (under 1k if possible)? Also, I was told I can handle a 16-inch, but should I try a slightly smaller one to more easily work on technique, or is it better to get accustomed to the biggest instrument I can comfortably handle at the outset?
I just emailed you!
Thank you for the videos. Please can you teach us how to play the Star Wars theme¿
Star Wars theme
I would suggest checking out www.musescore.com and searching the title you’re looking for. The sheet music will be there!
Such a beautiful viola.
Thank you, I love my Iizuka!
I am concerned that my thumb is too straight when I hold my bow. I think you said it needs to be curved.
Yes it should be curved. It might be easier to start with your thumb under the metal part of the frog. Get it set up there and comfortable being curved before you move it to the “professional” thumb position.
So helpful
I'm so glad it helped!
Thank you so much for this video I'm in Cameron i really love to learn Viola and use it in music ministry
You are very welcome! Please let me know if there are any additional videos I can make to help you on your journey!
Love your viola! What size is it?
It is just over 16 inches
Brava!
Thank you!
I met the viola in 4th grade and I played all through middle school and highschool (minus 9th grade) I’m refreshing my memory bc it’s been about 7 years since I’ve touched an instrument and I’ve added one to my cart and awaiting a couple days to make sure I’m pretty serious and not being nostalgically impulsive. All that to say… I’m here bc I’m excited and emotional about it. Thank you for this beautiful platform and space. 🫶🏾🫶🏾
Yay that's so exciting!! Welcome back to viola, it's never too late to start again <3
I'm having trouble with the reach. I'm on a 15" viola, and have only been playing for a couple of months. I've also been dealing with chronic shoulder bursitis/tendonitis for the past three years almost, and no matter what I do, I can't get that fourth finger up to the C string. Sometimes, I can get to G, but it's a struggle. The teacher I have now, virtually the only one in my state, within my country, told me that most violists barely use their fourth finger anyway, so not to worry. That...seems not quite right to me. I'm not looking to become a soloist or anything of that nature, but I do want to be able to play as well as I can. How is not being able to get my fourth finger up to the G and C strings going to impact my playing? Could I simply play the open string below, instead? I don't want to give up the viola for anything, but I also don't want to stay on bare beginner books, unable to progress because of my reach.
Hi there! Yes, we need to be able to use our fourth finger! You can try VERY SLIGHTLY collapsing your left wrist towards the neck to make it easier for your 4th finger to reach. The other thing I would suggest is only keeping your 3rd finger on the string to support the 4th finger- in other words, you should not keep your 1st and 2nd fingers depressed on the string when playing 4. Please let me know if either of these help!
I'm trying to relearn the viola after over a decade of non playing. I can't wait to pick it up again
Welcome back!!!
In the faster version, measure 71 beat 3 you have a C# and in the slow version it's a C. the music says C, but we are liking the C#, please advise.
oops it should be C natural, thanks for catching that!
Clear and helpful, the approach applies to many other scales to better move across the board.
Thank you!
Hi my name is Art, I am 91 years old, I have some arthritis in my left hand and I bought my viola 3 weeks ago. I am having alot of trouble getting my fingers on my left hand to get on the strings, Any suggestions
Hi Art! I love that you're starting viola at 91! In terms of your left hand, I would recommend a series of stretches before you start playing. I made a quick video about that here- ruclips.net/video/HTxukfWYYsY/видео.html I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
We hate using it every day~ yep. now to overcome that animosity!
The metronome/tuner are my best friends but it definitely was a rocky start to that relationship!
Hi Cassie, I've played the violin for decades and am quite adept at it. I studied classical guitar at the Sydney Conservatorium in Australia. I have ( I really don't know why) a trouble with the alto clef and it gets me all the time. Where would you suggest I start in your videos/uploads so that I don't waste time but don't get ahead of myself either. I'm not being a problem just asking whether I should continue with the plucked lessons but get to the bowed lessons and get ahead as quickly as possible - as we all wish to.
If you're only struggling with alto clef, I made a video about that- ruclips.net/video/5kTQdXyIUEI/видео.html You can also practice reading alto clef using this wonderful website resource- www.musictheory.net/exercises/note/rfiyryyynyyyyy. I customized the exercise for all the alto clef notes in 1st position, I hope these resources help!
Thank you! Working on this piece now with my teacher.
you're very welcome, I'm so glad it helps!
Are shoulder pads from Amazon still good? Also my orchestra teacher uses that beginner song too!
It depends on which should rest you're talking about. I recommend these- amzn.to/3ZWF2Yr or these amzn.to/3ZUGzhI. Make sure you purchase the correct size for your instrument!
Thank You, have been looking for viola tips and your website came up. Much appreciated!
I'm so glad they help!
Tyysym
3:09 is this on ur patron?
Yes the sheet music is there to print!
These tips are great! I'm working on the last songs of the Suzuki book 1 and my poor left hand position was really causing me intonation issues when "jumping" between strings (like third finger positions weren't in the same spot on all strings), this solved that. Will make this part of my warm-up. Thank you!
I’m so glad they help! if there’s anything else I can help with please let me know🙂
Well, that fast play through woke me up!
Don’t blame me blame Schubert!!
😀😃😄
Thank you so much!!
you’re very welcome!
thank u im in middle school and learning how to play viola. sometimes the class goes a little to fast and I’m behind 😭 but these videos r helping :)❤❤❤
I'm so glad they help! Keep up the great work and let me know if there are any videos I can make to help you!
@@stringswithdrsulbaran ofc they help :D thank u ur videos r very helpful and I’m learning more and more everyday :)
Is it low 2 on the D string for natural A minor?
Yes 🙂
@@cassiesulbaran thank you!🫶
I didn’t see very well where you place your fingers
thak you so much. Im learning bach casadesus viola concerto firt and second mov. And i have lot of trouble with the pitch can you recommend omething in thid cse where there is a lot of chromatic parts?
Use a tuner, go very slowly and focus on hearing or better yet singing/humming the pitch before you play it. You could also play the more chromatic passages in first position or down 1 octave to get the pitches in your ear before playing them in 3rd position!
Thank you for your time, I'm really enjoying learning from your videos!
I’m so glad they help!
Thank you again. My son is practicing an exercise called "3rd Position" on page 26 Suzuki book 2 Viola. This will help him a lot. You came at the perfect time. God bless you❤
Awesome I am so glad this video came at just the right time!
It would be a pleasure if you can record closer to the string playing . cannot see clearly which string you playing.
I will take note of that, if you have any questions about which string I'm on please let me know!
Thank you for the help
you're so weclome!
Thank you so much. My son is learning viola and he loves you 😊
That is so sweet! Please let me know if he has any questions I can answer in a video!
Hi teacher.
Hi, I am a teenager and my mother has recently given me her viola that she hasn’t used for decades. I saw your playlist of tutorials and I realized there are only two fine tuners on her viola. What should I do? Just use the pegs on the top?
Hi there! I would recommend taking it to a local shop so they can install the additional fine tuners. They can also tune the viola for you so you don't have to worry about breaking a string. If you're unsure of which shop to go to, let me know the area where you live and I can recommend a trustworthy shop!
A tempo play through Meas 44 First note - D I think that is not played as a D...? I think you are playing Bb...? The slow play and instructions are played as D Also I'm curious which Suzuki edition of volume five you are using. The articulations, bowings, etc are not the same as mine. I have revised edition 2010 Ty! Idk what I would have done without this video. I quickly got in top of this piece! Now to polish it! I appreciate this so much So much work you put into it!
Might be a different edition, I have the older books from 1986. My measure 44 actually starts with C-B natural-C. Go with what your edition says, or change to the bowings in mine! It's really an editor who made those changes, so either are valid!
@@stringswithdrsulbaran OOOOPPSSSSS!!!!!!! I meant meas 45 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You played Bb only in the "a tempo" recording, and I noticed it because I have played and listened to it soooo many times! Otherwise, I just would have thought of it as a nice surprise note! It's still a good note there!
Super helpful! Thank you very much. I thought this was detaché and legato is more notes on one bow? If not, what is the difference between this and detaché?
Legato means smooth, detache means separate. You might be thinking of slurs? A slur combines more than 1 note in a bow. Does that help?
This was beautiful, and you are so clear and direct, We/I are so very grateful
Thank you!! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Gracias!! Espero q les ayuda!
You make it seem so easy
Years of practice!! You’ll get there just keep making progress little by little 😊
Compartiré este video con mis estudiantes.
Hey I have a quick question during the plucking of notes b c sharp and d my string does not make a sound what should I do
My initial thought was that you might not be pressing your left hand into the strong firmly enough. Imagine squishing into a marshmallow with the tip of your fingertip. They should depress the string into the fingerboard gently but firmly. Let me know if that fixes the problem!
Ms. Cassie you are a very great violist, and teacher. I love your videos, (yes, I am subscribed 😏) and the way you walk through the scales, songs, and exercises is like money other. A lot of respect 👌🏼💯 you have really helped me in my learning the viola and how to do vibrato, scales, fingerings, and bowing. I still have a long way to go, but your videos make my playing possible 😉 Thank you very much. (I have a question. Could you possibly do a few vids in the future explaining 2nd, 3rd, and 4th position, unless you already have...?)
Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm glad these videos help! I can definitely make a video on the different positions! Is there anything in particular you're looking for advice on, or just a general explanation?
Thank you, your slower version is just what I needed!!
I’m so happy it helped!
Just got a viola and even with a shoulder rest it is slanted (not the scroll pointing up or down, the right side is slanted down a bit when I hold it) am I holding it wrong, or is this fine?
if it looks similar to the position of my viola, you're fine. The viola should be parallel to the floor or slightly down towards the floor. If it is slightly tilted towards the center of your body that's ok too! I hope that helps
Thanks!
Love your vids but your arm right arm positions are sometimes 'out with the frame shot' so it is not possible to see what is going on.
thanks! If you have a specific bowing question, I'm happy to answer it. Feel free to email me at cassie.sulbaran@gmail.com
These exercises are fantastic and just what I have been searching for. Thank you for sharing them.
You're so welcome I’m glad they help!!
