Hey, thanks for commenting. Each country has their own requirements for allowing a physician to practice, I’m not sure what those requirements are in other Latin-American countries. In Saint Kitts, we need to do a 1 year rotation in each of the services in the hospital as new doctors ( with consultant supervision) before we can work on our own. The salary in the Caribbean is relatively low compared to the rest of the world (even though it may be considered “high income” here) which roughly 2,200 USD/month. Doesn’t sound like a lot but in Latin America and the Caribbean, you can live a pretty decent middle class life on that salary. If you decide to practice privately however, you can make much much more 10-15k+ monthly.

Hi Aisha! Thank you for your comment! Most of the students who get scholarships to study in Cuba are under contract to return to their countries of origin and dedicate 5 years of service to their country before pursuing any other ventures. It’s not unheard of that Cuban graduates do the USMLE. We have also had American students that have to do Step exams simultaneously with their courses in Cuba. Personally, I think it could be a good thing to do above all, for more options for work but then the conversation of the pros and cons of potentially uprooting myself and my husband’s life to move to the US (to complete residency) is something that has to be weighed. Hope this gives you some insight.

Hey, thanks for your question. I’m overdue for treatment at this point but I would say it’s the only thing that gave me relief. I was hoping that my symptoms would improve after braces but I’m almost done with my orthodontic treatment and I’m still clenching and grinding my teeth while sleeping. I tried a mouth guard but although it does provide some protection from dental damage it doesn’t help the muscle activation and subsequent pain and discomfort the morning after clenching down on a mouth guard all night. Ultimately, the only thing short of surgery that actually gave me relief, relaxed my jaw and made me forget for a while that I had TMJ issues was Botox. And the slight face slimming effect is an added bonus.

@@ChanellaNisbett this is much appreciated- had my Botox injection first phase last week and I must say - I’ve had some relief- this is encouraging and I’ll be having a follow up next week 😄- the clinic being diligent checked on me this morning too.

Thanks for your comment. As far as options for students coming from poverty, which was my case, are scholarships whether from Cuba, some Eastern European countries, Asian countries and even other Caribbean countries. There are also grants and so forth. However, most of these resources require you to have at least above average academic abilities despite coming from a resource poor background. These scholarships can take some digging around to find, but they definitely exist.

@@539jchat Hey! It actually worked out really well for me... I got a job in my home country pretty much as soon as I returned, now I'm working overseas for an international company. My spanish is pretty good, I wouldn't say I speak like a native but very fluent. It helps that my husband is Cuban so I practice every single day haha
