Fargo Dome: Fargo, ND attendance: 9,473 support act: Idlewild notes: Ed is sick, drinking tea, chasing it with wine and a smoke throughout the show. Ed flubs the lyrics to 'DTE' and the band has to adjust, leading to an awkward moment in the mid-song. After 'Insignificance,' Ed points out that the reason the band are playing Fargo is Jeff Ament and the crowd responds with "Jeff" chants. Ed mentions Jeff's family, who are supposedly in the stands stage right holding a large "Thanks, Jeff" banner. He thanks the Cohen brothers, leading to 'NAIS.' Ed postulates that in the 2300+ shows the Ramones played, not one was in Fargo, and thus, this is the first time this song has ever been played in Fargo, leading to 'I Believe in Miracles.' The 'Daughter' tag doesn't quite get off the ground with the crowd, who have trouble with the call and response and Ed struggles with his throat. 'In My Tree' makes its tour debut, though the band only "play the part we remember..." It's a fairly low-key, slower and shorter version, but beautiful in its simplicity, with improvised lyrics at the end. -- Five Horizons

Oakland Stadium - Oakland, CA attendance: 60 000 (sold out) supporting: The Rolling Stones notes: Stone is back to his marching and Eddie a lot happier, loose and talking more... moving up to the front of the stage. "Brain of J." rocks! Eddie brings out the maracas during "Daughter", and the tag "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" is a song by Gerry and the Pacemakers. Pearl Jam doesn't have a lot of room to move around on the stage - it's blocked off... they seem to have less room to move than at the Letterman show last year. -- PJCC

'Elderly Woman' is for people from small towns. The 'Immortality' solo is very bluesy, and Matt has a great solo. 'Even Flow' culminates with Mike and Stone squaring off from their respective sides of the stage, initiating a call and answer between guitars. The lyrics in the 'Another Brick In The Wall II' tag on 'Daughter' are modified. The band brings out a friend of Stone's who got married the day before (Mike Tyler ... 'Untitled' is a much longer version with different verses. Ed talks to Stone and then says that Stone wasn't afraid to arrive in a helicopter but he's afraid to play 'Breath.' Stone retorts: "Should I tell you the song that Ed doesn't have the guts to play or not?" Ed says they've come to a "mutual disagreement" which leads to 'Elderly Woman.' The 'Save It For Later' tag includes the first verse of the song. attendance: 4 000 (sold out) Eddie comments that it was "a year ago tomorrow" since he met the band. This showcase show also featured Spinal Tap, Alice in Chains, Screaming Jets, Soundgarden and Thunder. A "special surprise guest" (rumored to be Metallica) was supposed to play, but it was announced that there was a mix up but the night wasn't over and, "... so the Seattle theme continues... ladies and gentlemen, Temple of the Dog!". Now the crowd has dwindled to only 500 people, but three songs are performed: "Hunger Strike", "Reach Down" and "Pushin Forward Back", together with Jerry Cantrell. -- PJCC

Koseinenkin Kaikan: Osaka, Japan attendance: 2,400 notes: A heartwrenchingly beautiful 'Oceans' opens. The entire band converges and chats between songs, making up the setlist as they go and creating one that is unusual. 'Wishlist' has an outstanding extended ending with added lyrics. The "man" trilogy is introduced by Ed in Japanese. Porch is a highlight with the long jam in the middle and Ed throwing in a bit of an improv (call/response with audience then, "hey, ho, let's go). To open the second encore, Ed takes the stage and says the next song is for someone he met at the train station that day. This leads to a solo version of 'Last Kiss,' but Ed has trouble as the guitar is not plugged in fully. A tech runs out and pops the plug in much to Ed's chagrin, and he restarts the song. Ed introduces Jeff as "Stone Gossard" and Stone as "Jeff Ament" (they have changed positions with Jeff on lead and Stone on bass), leading to 'Smile.' Mike plays a few bars of 'Jumping Jack Flash,' providing time for Jeff and Stone to get back to their regular spots and guitars, leading to 'Alive. -- Five Horizons

Verizon Wireless Amphitheater: Irvine (Los Angeles), CA attendance: 16,000 support act: Idlewild soundcheck: In Hiding, Dissident, Of The Girl, Oceans notes: A bluesy 'Of The Girl' opens with Ed yelling "Let's go!" at the end. Ed references the bonfire on the grass in the back the last time they played here and what a relief that isn't happening now. He says he thinks he met Matt here when Ed was just about to go to Seattle and Matt was in Soundgarden and points how how far back he was in the crowd. 'Baba' is huge with tambourines bashed and thrown like Frisbees into the crowd. Stone is doing mini-windmills. Afterward, Matt leaves the stage and has his jacket on when Mike and Ed go into YL' and that closes the evening. -- Five Horizons

Sandstone Amphitheatre: Bonner Springs, KS support act: Supergrass soundcheck: guitar jam, U, U Tonight Mr. Stone Gossard rules the stage, starting with a fiery solo during 'DTE.' The band is much more tight and focused tonight and Ed demonstrates no visible ill effects of yesterday's ankle injury. 'Untitled' is extended and Ed's going to arrive in "58 minutes" tonight (a nod to the late and popular Kansas City Chief's linebacker Derrick Thomas who died after injuries from a car accident); a tighter version of 'U' (Ed joked, "This one's hard to find...it was a b-side ... you can find it on Napster... hey, that's where we found it!") surfaces for the second night in a row. A super-intense 'RVM' followed by an incredibly ferocious 'RITFW' close out a brilliant performance. -- Five Horizons

Sjöhistoriska Museet: Stockholm, Sweden attendance: 15,000 supporting: Neil Young notes: At this outdoor show, Ed references how the last time they played Stockholm someone (an American) was backstage stealing their stuff. PJ's set ends with the audience picking up the 'Tonight's the Night' vocal and the band listening to the audience sing in unison. After Neil's set, a light flashes from the side of the stage and one of the speakers 30 feet up is smoking and catches on fire. With the roadies fighting the flames, Neil returns for the encore, unaware of the fire, and comments on how they haven't played the next song for a long time so ... "Let's bring out Pearl Jam to do it." Then Neil and Pearl Jam perform a thunderous, blistering version of "Rocking in the Free World" together. -- Five Horizons

Moderna Museet, Skeppsholmen: Stockholm, Sweden attendance: 1,500 notes: This show, originally scheduled for the Melody Club, was moved to this outdoor venue due to the current popularity of Ten. With no opening act, Ed and Mike took the stage to open with two acoustic songs: "DRIVEN TO TEARS" and "Throw Your Arms Around Me" . Ed spies someone taping in the audience and remarks, "This guy's making a tape recording ... everybody be careful ... don't make too much noise. No keep it out. I like that idea. He's OK. Let him tape the show, yeah ... we wanna remember this, right?" A lot of stuff is being thrown on stage during this show. After 'Once,' Ed, being hit by a shoe, becomes angry, and holds the shoe up, and smiles, fills it with his beverage and drinks from it. The night was marred by some of the band's personal items being stolen backstage as they played. -- Five Horizons

attendance: 800 support act: Odd Numbers PJ plays a "surprise" warm-up show, billed as the "Honking Seals." Ed stops "Sometimes," saying "Such a nice song; I want to be able to hear it" and it is picked up where left off. New songs (verified from the setlist at the soundboard) are 'Brain of J,' 'Given to Fly,' 'Wish List' and 'Do the Evolution. Ed encourages the crowd to be quiet so he can phone Neil and do the birthday thing (crowd sings HB to Neil young). The crowd is mellow and respectful but very psyched. -- Five Horizons

Oakland Stadium: Oakland, CA supporting: The Rolling Stones Ed plays maracas once again, this time during 'Animal.' 'Even Flow' is a long, extended jam with the band members all facing Jack, their backs to the audience. After Mike plays a little 'Start Me Up' teaser riff, a nearly complete cover of 'Beast of Burden' is performed. During 'Alive' Eddie loses his place and substitutes "I forgot the words to the song, she said." He then dumps wine on people in the audience and runs the ENTIRE length of the Stones' stage, from left to right. They close with an awesome version of 'Yellow Ledbetter,' ended with Mike just soloing (and including a bit of 'Sympathy for the Devil'), and the rest of the band applauding him at the finish. Stone was brave enough to wear his glasses tonight, even. -- Five Horizons

Gimli Motorsport Park: Gimli, Manitoba (Sunfest '93) attendance: 47,000 This show is frequently referred to as "Mudfest" due to a downpour prior to the concert. One of the reasons that this show is so incredible is that PJ was jumping out of their collective skins to be able to cut loose for more than 90 minutes. Currently touring with Neil Young, they were confined to an early 45 minute set. They were offered this slot (and are the only non-Canadian band ever to play this large festival) and it became their night. Despite Ed's drinking, PJ is very high energy and intense. -- Five Horizons
