I love OpenZFS and I use it on my desktop a $349 own build from 2019. It stores all my data and VMs on a Ryzen 3 2200G; 16GB; 512GB nvme (3400/2300MB/s) and a 2TB HDD with a 128GB SSD as cache (L2ARC; 530MB/s). I have a strange set up! I run OpenZFS and Virtualbox on a minimal install of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and all my apps run in VBox VMs (2x Windows and 4x Linux). I reserved 1GB to max 4GB for the memory cache (L1ARC). The advantages for me are: - Copy on Write, using ext4 and ntfs I collected many corrupted files due to the 2 to 20 power fails per week in the Caribbean. COW solved that issue. - Snapshots, the last few years I had 2 hack attempts and I solved it by rolling back to the snapshot before that hack attempt. - Virtual Machine responsiveness due to L1ARC, it is like running a VM from a RAM disk :) - Note that all storage and all caches are lz4 compressed (by default), so you can reduce many ext4 sizes stored with say 1.8. - Note that it also reduces the number of IO operations to read those files with the same factor 1.8. - Ubuntu supports OpenZFS, the installers allows to boot from OpenZFS and it is part of the standard repositories. - It supports a kind of mirrored dataset (copies=2) in a striped datapool, see last paragraph. This year; after 5 years I will do a mid-life upgrade to a Ryzen 5 5600G and 32GB DDR, I have the feeling, that I will need that upgrade somewhere in the next 5 years :) End 2023 that 2TB HDD was the first step in the mid life upgrade, because my 2 existing HDDs (500GB + 1TB) with 10 power-on years died within 3 months of each other. I used those 2 HDDs with three 500GB partitions with one datapool with 2 striped partitions and one datapool with a single partition. One dataset with private stuff was run with copies=2, a kind of mirrored dataset in a striped datapool; Once OpenZFS informed me, that they had corrected an inconsistency between both copies :)

I was wondering if you may have some suggestions on an OS and VM given those requirements. At the moment , given the cost efficiency of the Linux distributions, that’s our top pick. I was just curious about their compatibility with a VM.

If you do not use Windows, RDP does not make sense. And VNC is very slow. I think the alternatives are better. In that case I would prefer Supremo. Of course it is remarkable to use an RDP server.
