In 1924, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) was controlled by the British South Africa Company, and the mental health of the population was not a significant concern. Mental health patients in Northern Rhodesia were often sent to hospitals in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) due to a lack of mental health facilities in the region. In 1927, the Lunacy Ordinance was enacted in Northern Rhodesia to regulate mental health concerns, but it did not prioritize the human rights of mental patients. The first mental hospital in Northern Rhodesia, Chinama Mental Hospital, was established in 1962, and it relied on professionals from other countries as there were no trained mental health professionals in Zambia at the time.
