This is a super movie and a masterful adaptation of a really inventive novel. Word is that Caine had the option of playing Devlin but chose to play Steiner. The provisional IRA, and it's bombings irked the proud Englishman, and he chose to play an explicitly non-Anti-Semitic German officer instead.

1st saw this as late night movie in the mid seventies... Only 9-10 yrs old then... Ensemble cast. McQueen had to be prima dona. He succeeded. I'd say the film too... Napster'ed the theme... I play this, 'Patton', 'Bridge Over River Kwai', 'The Right Stuff' in succession on long drives...

I was stood in Charlestown today [ 28mins 16sec in to the film ] and stood out side the pub. Love that scene watching old mates like Gerry Crampton and Del Baker [ Stunt Men ] pop up as the Germans . Great movie and a go to at least once a year.

And Jamie, if that is the Parish Church of the Village, it would more likely be Church of England and not Catholic, as portrayed in the film. In fact, and not many people know this, the parish with its parish church(es) is the basic territorial unit of the Church of England.

One of my favorite war films, funnily enough 4 of my top 5 all have Donald Sutherland... The Eagle Has Landed, M.A.S.H, Kelly's Hero's, The Eye of the Needle, Wheels of Terror aka The Misfit Brigade... Also there is a sequel book to this called the Eagle Has Flown... the slightly change the end of this story, Steiner isn't killed...
