Self taught knife maker sharing snippets from my workshop.
Making My First Damascus Knife
Here's how I made my first damascus knife. For the steel I used a piece of Chevron GoMai from @BakerForge The handle is made from blue carbon fiber and coyote brown canvas micarta with black liners and copper pins. This was a custom order build so the handle also has a bullet that is encased in epoxy. I also made a small bead from the same material as the handle and a black pocket carry clip on sheath.

Handmade: Tanto with a Hamon | Knife Making [CC]

Added closed captions that help explain the process. Really happy with how this tanto turned out. The hamon looks incredible and I am very pleased with the handle material combo. Had a bit of a tough time filming all of this but overall I'm happy with the result. This is my first full build video, so leave your suggestion of what you would like to see in future videos in the comments. Custom ha...

Very beautiful damascus pattern.
Yeah the mesh layer really pops.
Great job
Thanks!
Hi 👋 man?!!! This is my first time subscribing and commenting. And Maan, that's a beautiful 😍 knife 🔪 😍 nice work 👍 👌
Thank you.
👌🏼👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Looking jordaar
Amazing and artful work, my friend! Great job, the knife is beautiful! Can't wait for your next one! Have a blessed day 😊
Thank you!
Another great piece and that damascus is amazing... I love how you experiment with materials (is that CarbonWaves colored carbon fiber?) and put them togheter, i used to try that too and its not easy (without proper tools and loads of expirience)... You deserve much bigger audience, keep this longer builds comming if you can..
Thank you very much for your kind words. The blue carbon fiber is from Emil Epoxy Lab.
Damn with that texturing you couldn’t drop that knife even if you wanted to. 😂. Looks great though.
Yup it's a hell of a grip. Thanks.
Nowwww that’s a knniiffee!!
Sure is!
Excellent
Thanks
I really like to see the full version of making that textured handle. It is so cool looking handle.
I use a rotary tool with a dumb sander attachment. I practiced on a piece of scrap wood first, it's not that hard you just need to keep the spacing consistent.
This is the less tanto looking knife you could ever make next time make an axe and call it kitchen knife
You attempt at making a trolling comment on a random RUclips video is too weak. Please try again.
@@HelixKnives face the reality mate you don't know what tanto looks like just accept it
@@HelixKnives you made bowie but with more corners
@@tekken.universal2343 Agh! You really got me with that one. Please no more, your insignificant opinions are hurting my self-esteem 😁
Beautiful!!! I love the style for gripping! Thank you for the video my friend. Have a blessed day 😊
Thank you! Appreciate it!
Asmr😅
Wow I love it. Can I have two by Christmas?
Sure, you can write exactly what you would like on my custom order submission page www.helixknives.com/customorder
That is freaking awesome man! Such a cool design 👍
Thank you!
If only we could click a real life x8 button when hand sanding! I've admired your work on Pinterest for quite a while now, and I must admit, your profiles and finishes have inspired most of my work! Keep up the good work and if you persist with your videos, I'm sure you'll inspire many other keen knife makers starting out. Great work!
More like x30 😁 Always cool to hear that people not only enjoy my work but get some inspiration out of it. Thank you for your kind words.
Beautiful
Thanks!
It's good to see you still working, sir! Beautiful work as usual and thank you for sharing your video! Looking forward to your other works of art. Have a blessed day 😊
Thank you very much!
Beautiful knife, but can’t help but notice a defect in the scales near the tang. My eyes might be tricking me, though. I would like you to torture test your knives for us, please! Also, this knife’s blade would give hell to whoever sharpens it. Tutorial video, maybe?
I don't know what you are seeing but the handle has no defects. I just posted a edge test video you should check it out.
That handle material looks like a banded Agate 😮 Also amazing job with the hyperlapse edits 👏
Thanks!
Nice job, that handle looks amazing. I just ordered a knife (Joker Bushlore) that has curly birch handles and I’d like to do the same to mine. May I ask what exactly you used and the steps you took to achieve such a beautiful finish? Thank you!
I like to use tung oil at 120grit and cover it a few times to really saturate the wood. Then I would wet sand with tung oil all the way up to 2000 grit and finish by hand polishing with a microfiber towel and automotive polish. This particular piece of curly birch is red because it had been stabilized with red stabilizing resin prior to finishing.
Dope AF results, @HelixKnives! Now it needs an equally dope sheath/scabbard to complete the package!
Thanks, I did make a make a sheath for this one as well but didn't film it.
@@HelixKnives That's good to know!
Man, I love your work. Don't know what they cost, but they're worth it. You are an artist
Thank you I appreciate the kind words!
Sweet. Love it. Well done!
Thanks!
What is that materiel did you use in handle and polish
The handle is stabilized mapel burl. I sand sanded it to 2000 grit and then polished it with polishing paste.
I’d like this style blade and look…just about 2inches bigger because I’m huge so it would fit in my hands…I’m special order one Lix!
Are you on insta ? I wanna chat 😅
Saucy 🤤
Wow
Beautiful, just my style.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I tried making a similar sheath. It didn't come out that as well. I have learned some new tricks. Thank you
Thanks for watching. Trial and error is the best way to learn. I'm sure your next sheath will be light years better 👍
😃
Thank God the knife community is open-minded to the idea of honoring other cultures’ innovation through replicating it and not a close-minded-cultural-appropriation-police.
Well... if you look long enough you can find all kinds of folks, but for the most part we're cool.
The amount of detail in this one is astounding!
Thank you!
I call this one “The Hunchback”
ESMERALDAAAA!!!!!
How wide is that knife handle? The steel alone looks around a quarter inch
I think the steel is about 4.5mm, don't know about the handle it has been a while.
Beautiful.
Awesome as usual 🔥
Thanks 🤘
Omg! That's my dream knife!!! I mean exactly except it's not Damascus. How the hell did you pull this out of my mind?
Thank you very much!
Beautiful
Thanks.
Hello, Helix, please tell me what kind of paste you applied to the blade at 11:29 a.m. and what is it for? And in general, please write the name of what you use when creating knives, you will greatly help others to comprehend the magnificent world of knife making
It's turtle wax scratch remover. It polishes the hamon.
Hello Helix, great job, please tell me how this gray matte etching is done
Hi, I use ferric chloride for the etching. I have a full build of this knife on my channel, I explain the process more there, you should check it out.
@@HelixKnives Thank you for the answer, I will definitely look at it
You did it with a router?
Belt grinder.
Did you know you can use just a little bit of vaselineonly areas? You don't want the epoxy to stick. Making cleaned up after set up a breeze.
I have used that method in the past with wax. But now that I use a different epoxy for glue up it doesn't seem to work as well, the glue gets too hard and not easy to remove.
Wooooooooo!!!! 😮😮😮😮❤
Freaking beautiful knife!!! Thank you for sharing your video! I have seen your knives on Pinterest before, but thought of looking you up on RUclips. I'm subscribing. Have a blessed day 😊
Thank you very much 🙏
Damn thats nice. What’s blade thickness?
Thanks, 5 mm.
Very nice I will be using it in my next design. Thank you.
I don't think you'll catch many pokemon with it 😬
