S.R.V's A.A Speech (Full)
Stevie Ray Vaughan discusses alcohol, drugs & sobriety at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in early 1990.

It gives me goosebumps to listen to him giving his lead, after I thought he was a musical legend. So glad that he found sobriety but so sad that he was taken off this earth too soon.

I fight alcoholism every morning, and I fight fire with fire. Nah, in all seriousness Im glad SRV got sober and if you have a problem you should too.

Of course his teen gf showed up. She was living in his home and totally depended on his fame and money. She couldn’t say no. I don’t mean any disrespect to SRV but she was in it for the gold. It was mentioned by those close to him that he actually called Lenny first. She declined. It sounds cold but I think after 13yr of this, she couldn’t deal with it anymore.

It was attractive to him because it originally medicated him. It probably numbed him from his dysfunctional and emotionally unavailable father. Makes me sad because I had the same dad figure. It hurts your self esteem tremendously. The man who is supposed to be your mentor, your ‘rock’ seems like the enemy. Anyway, he worked so hard to turn it around every single day of his life. His struggle with addiction and his music career starts paying off and he’s killed. Killed by an incompetent pilot who had no business flying that night. This could have been prevented. Life is so cruel.

It was so sad when we lost this man. RIP Stevie. I started drinking at 8 also. Sober since 1990 myself and forever grateful. I got sober In Dallas. I remember the Aquarius group. I got sober at the gift in Irving then moved to Carrollton and new home group was Addison group. I now hail in TN but miss Texas AA. I love AA anywhere but I guess where you get sober will always be special.

Great speech but I think when he talks about being confused in terms of thinking and feeling that's probably one of the biggest issues with getting sober. Life is complicated

From Johnny Winter´s "Still Alive And Well": -They tried to get me lot´s of times and now their coming after you, I got out and I´m here to say, baby you can get out too..", just comes to my mind after listening to the speech a good 10 times here. Hearing this speech for the first time, it is so powerful it gives me tears and hope. God bless his soul.

Stevie is the hero of mine. I am a hardcore alcoholic. Been to hell and back and almost died several times from this disease. I'm struggling right now to get my sobriety back I have short periods of sobriety from time to time. But one thing that's always on my mind if I don't want to die drunk or high. I'm just glad that our brother died sober

That thing he mentions about not knowing how he feels, could be a result of his dad's abuse when he was small. I had an abusive mother & have the same problems with not knowing how I feel. I think it comes from having your feelings invalidated or beaten out of you when you're still so young. Bless him. I wish he'd been given more time.

This speech is so inspiring and SRV’s journey is so inspiring, he and Jimi Hendrix are my favorite musicians and the greatest blues guitarists of all time IMO. I’ve been sober for 5 months now and the last time I used, I listened to this speech, it saved my life and I come back to it often. I can’t thank SRV enough for his music and for sharing his journey, best wishes to everyone, especially reckoning addicts and using addicts, I hope you and I can find sobering, if Stevie can do it, we all can!! Much love❤️❤️❤️💯
