Golf VI 1.4 TSI 122 hp rattling stuttering
Hi experts, here's a clip of starting my 1.4 TSI 122 Hp (60.000 miles) The rattling sounds got heavier quickly over the past few weeks, the engine stutters for about 1 minute (unfortunately not well visible in the clip), and there's also a kind of metal-ish rattle audible in the exhaust. Could this be the chains or perhaps the cam adjuster?

What is the part that you changed in the car?
I have the same problem, can you please tell me how you fixed it?
It's normal if the sound goes away after a minute on a cold start oil has not reached the chain yet
Thats a mass flywheel noise
I have almost the same sound in Volkswagen 1.4 TSI BMY engine and sound completely gone after 1-2km but I know, is timing chain.
It's not always the timing chain, my car did the same and I went to change the timing chain just to find out it was replaced by the previous owner.
Des çok güzel 80 lerin karburotorlu motor sesini andiriyor🤣
MOst of the sound is injectors, the slappy sound is either worn out timing chain / tensioners or low oil pressure.
Bujas o salto chispa
They all rattle to some extent as the tensioner/chain wears out, but that is a particularly bad example. Poor maintenance causing premature wear?
If oil smells like gas, a first fix is to change oil and oil filter. I had only 8 month old oil but fixed after oil change. Bad oil pressure
ruclips.net/video/1lw3yjaDpZI/видео.html i have same issue with my car engine i have shared link can someone help me
Sounds normal engine warms up
Noooo...
Bro this is not a diesel
Replace chain and tensioner then get a fresh engine oil change.
Timing Chain every 60Mm or dead
Hey buddy I have the same problem on my golf 6 1.4 tsi I uploaded 2 videos on my channel with the start-up if you can watch them please. I don't know what to do, I went to several mechanics and some told me the same explanation about the hydraulic chain tensioner, that it takes a few seconds for the oil to compress it. But other guys say that I should change the chain etc. What should I do ? Did you fix your problem?
Trust your technician.. He knows better than a video.. He studied his job.. When your heart is in pain you go to a doctor or you post a video?
@@fotistheone4737 argh ... chest tightening ... argg ... must post video ... (sorry I am.doing R&D on this noise for my 1.2 TSi). Likely it is the chain ... my brain and wallet wants it to be something trvial. Last VW car I ever buy.
@Jimmy Doran I am with you there except I like the idea of an MX5/Miata ... rust ... now EU cars got that part right. I just had chain, tension and water pump replaced on Skoda. £610. Ouch. Still makes noise - not quite a much. Drives a lot better though. I have the old chain and guides and they appeared ok - but honestly I wouldn't be able to tell. The Skoda has been relatively cheap. £8k 2nd hand, about £1k on jobs (let's ignore servicing and fuel/insurance). Had it 7 years - if it last another year that's £1k per year. Insurance was a lot cheaper than older car. It's fun to drive - just a shame VW didn't get the QA right. My Mrs's Toyota if I follow similar model to above has cost us £2k per year. Nice car but it is a bus. Cruises on autobahn but takes a while to get to speed. I know folks who buy Aluminium Audi ... never stop about how great it is. They spent more on repairs than both my cars put together - I guess its a matter of perspective.
@Jimmy DoranNowadays most of Japanese cars built in Europe!! Japanese cars breaks too..
Wow new friend here lets support each other
Have you fix this?
Change this
Change this from the distribution I changed end i don t have problems
have the same problem, I changed the whole distribution, and the surprise did not disappear. I start the engine 2 3 minutes, after which nothing is heard From what I understood it is normal
It s normal always let the engine to do this noisy warm up me too 1.4 122
Completely off on a tangent but do you happen to know if this engine/manual gearbox combo has a single or dual mass flywheel. Even VW themselves arent clear?
Yeah finding it hard to find any common info on this engine too! Good luck searching mate!
found out mine had single mass when I got the clutch done at 100k miles
pathetic junker of an engine. sounds like an old knackered vauxhall viva from 1974 or somat. vw really screwed up big time with this motor !!
mark jones nowhere near. In fact, this is one of the most reliable turbocharged engine VW has ever produced. The only drawback is the chain , that has to be replaced every 120.000 km. Otherwise it’s a great engine!
@@dansenglish8586 My son just had a stage 2 at RTMG with his mods he has 250 bhp and the engine sounds like a sewing machine. Though not inside and from the back it's an awesome little unit good for 320 stage 3 on standard engine as long as DSG mapped properly. RTMG are the dogs bollocks with these little beauty's. I'm getting one asap. RTMG have mapped Boccas with well over 100,000 and not a problem ever. Contact him and see, he has a Sirrocco 1.4 with 380bhp🙏
It was the seat belt retracting noise on the Viva ... and the rust ... and general shitness well just about everything about Vauxhall Viva :-)
@@stephenhookings1985 AND dont forget they would never start if there was a drop of rain or a slight frost. shocking rotbox sheds mate !
@@dansenglish8586 well im sorry if i have caused offence by slagging these engines off,but my cousins gorgeous vw scirocco at 4 years old and 56000 miles started to rattle on a weekend and he was due to take it to his local dealership on the following wednesday.tuesday morning on his way into work it literally self destructed on the local dual carriageway. left him stranded and the engine was beyond any form of repair, vw didnt wanna know. disgusting engine and shameful manufacturer.
Die Leute sind selber schuld solche Autos zu kaufen. Das Auto 😂😂 der letzte Rotz
This sound is for de chain, is of china vw and are very bad pieces. If you change the chain the sound will dissapear✌️
In my Seat it was the clain and the adjuster...ruclips.net/video/p05-vHQV3ok/видео.html
V Trouble You
I have the same problem in my golf 1.4 TSI 122HP 2010, Ive changed whole chain set one year ago, now after 15k km, the problem came again, ive bought "repair chain set" from VW and it didnt help so. Now im giving another chance to another mechanic. Anyone has 100% solution for this shit?
The fuel pressure regulator is in stake. The circular looking part on top of the back and of the engine. Do you have strange noise when accelerating or driving under load like uphill or similar?
Das auto☺
der problem :D :D
Did you install an aftermarket air intake?
Did you sort the problem? I have the same problem : ruclips.net/video/3cGf7_andqw/видео.html
VW junk.
Holdisch Bjorn fuck you
Replace the chain and the tensioning system a.s.a.p.
to replace the timing
replace your chain -tensioner before its too late!
I had the same sound, replace the whole set timing chain tensioner and all the rest that comes with it... I still have the same sound... it can be a sticky lifter since the car is running fine for years now.. i will try higher quality oil, and i will ask the mechanic to clean my oil distribution system and let you know if that fixes the problem.
It could be flywheel, friend had similar problem and he went to mechanic dude called it out instantly "it's your flywheel and not chain tensioner as you think it might be". Mechanic was spot on...
GamerFails Can you identify the sound from the videos on my channel?
It is the vvt gear. Vvt gear does not come in the kit if the tensioner and chain. You have to buy part separate. The tensioner noise is the symptoms but the main cause is the vvt gear
bad sound, it seems like diesel. engine, when that engine should be very silenced. replacement. of timming chain kit is urgent
There is also a high pitch whistling sound between approx 10 sec and starting coming down around 22 sec? Is it normal? If yes, what is the purpose of it?
Gergely Román Turbocharger
Sounds like a dying water pump to me
The whistling is your turbo free spooling. As the engine warms up, the diverter valve stays open, thus creating that sound
I have a same issue. I went to measure the timing chain and it jumped. Now they will change it and I hope it will last longer. Thank you for your video and you saved my engine!
Did it help?
@@theoposwayo9656 The car still work today after 70k km :)
Its normal ...
I have a question. What about tapping/knocking audible from 1:09 to the end. Also disappeared after replacing the cam adjuster? Sometimes in my engine i have exactly the same sound of knocking (usually when the engine is cold) and I am looking for any clue.
Sebastian Wróbel , I have not paying much attention to it lately but I don't remember I'm still hearing that sound. I'll have a good listening at it tonight. (But also, keep in mind that many noise sounds different when recoring with a smartphone and playing back e.g. laptop speakers...)
Thanks all for you're replies. The metalish rattle has been solved by replacing the cam adjuster (and during that repair it's been established that chains already had been replaced (I bought he car second hand)). Furthermore I've understood from VW that these engines have a heat up loop when starting it cold to get the catalyst on temperature which includes higher revs. I only do not understand that this heat up behaviour occurs in outdour temperatures above 16-17 degrees Celcius or when the engine is not completely cold.
The rough running on startup you get at certain temperature ranges, only happens when the engine (coolant temperature) is between 20c and 30c, when cold started at these temperatures it will run rough (some engine juddering) and make a burbling noise from the exhaust - what it is doing is pre-heating the catalyst by double fuelling and overlapping valve timing. It will also do this if you have run the car and left it a while to cool down and it cools down back into this range. It won't do it if it has recently done it...i.e. you can stop it by turning the engine off and starting again......Now why it does it ONLY in this temperature range is bit of a mystery as you would expect it to always do it at colder temperature and not just btwn 20 and 30c....I suspect it has to do with the fact the emmisions testing lab ambient requirements just so happen to be exactly the same temperature range!
Note using the temperature guage on your dash can give you a rough idea of when its going to do it - but of course ambient external temperature can be different to the coolant/engine temperature - as that takes a long time to track ambient (due to sheer metal mass of the engine and volume of coolant fluid).....btw I know all this as the rough running was really irritating in the summer when it was consistently in this temperature range and I would have to double start the car as I really don't like it doing this rough running for 30 seconds - its not good for the engine as its misfiring, and dumping lots of fuel in the cylinder = bore wash and wear on piston rings.....it irritated me so much that a built a device to fool the ECU to thinking the coolant temperature was something else if it was in this range - so it never runs rough doing this pointless (emmisions frig) catalyst pre-heat.
Can you kindly show us how to build the device. The missfires can be quite irritating. What I do to avoid this is to immediately drive off after start....works sometimes :-)
@@blower1 can this be done by reporgramming with VCDS somehow?
@@malcolm7226 Unfortunately not, there is no way via VCDS.
this is a design fault i have same problem with my skoda roomster, after 60000 km. the timing chain fails, it is too long no tensioners, complete design failure. repair costed me 570 euro and skoda does not want to pay it because warfranty is 3 years and my car is 4. this is a construction problem and u are lucky u have it after 60000 miles and not 60000 km. some people have this problem at 30000 km. this chain was replaced on mass scale in VW and skoda models. They never admitted this as design fault but they went back to the belt solution so indirectly they did.
I'm very lucky with mine then. I did 240.000 km before it was needed to change the chain.
Цепь меняй и натежитель
distribution chain.. go get it changed or the oil valve for it
What is the cure for the sound noise please,is it valve timing? reply
