This actress has no softness and femininity of the original 1980s Shogun TV series' Mariko. She is mean looking, kinda manly actually. Not sure which one is closer to the prototype cause I didn't read the book.

Japanese women may appear demure and submissive, but they really are an iron fist in a velvet glove… They are strong. Japan and its history and culture are master piece. I can’t wait to go back there. I miss the japanese people. They really did a wonderful job in this new adaptation of Shogun and the actress who plays mariko is totally awesome.
