The Video Game Crash of 2024: Are We Heading for Another Atari E.T. Disaster?
#ps5 #concord #videogameindustry
As we enter what clearly appears to be a genuine video game crash, I can't stop hearing comparisons between this crash spurned on by the PS5 game Concord, and the video game crash of 1983, spurned on by the Atari 2600 game E.T.
Which crash is worse? Did the video game industry learn any lessons from the video game crash of 1983? And more importantly, will the video game industry learn anything from the rejection of current games by consumers?

Is PS5 Concord The New Stadium Events?

The difference was that ET was over manufactured but the game still sold over 2 million copies, Concord on the other hand took 8 years to develop and had budget of $400million and flopped hard selling an estimated 25,000 units between Steam and PlayStation, and those are mostly digital copies so physical copies are a harder number to gauge because of the recall.

Politics and social issues are at least 50% of the reason for me I'm not buying some of these games. I'd like to relax, not have agendas pushed in my face. Kim Belair and her peers have self-inserted themselves and their world views into a large number games, and is its glaringly obvious; I want no part of it.

  • @BigHatStudios

In fairness, I think it should be noted that when accounting for the money spent on the game in all avenues (including development, advertisement etc) is still likely significantly less then its modern counterpart (referring to concord), the difference of inflation between now and 1983 whilst significant being around $1 in 2024 is roughly $3.16 in 1983 would still not bridge the gap between the cost of ET and Concord. Even if we estimated that ET cost 30 million to make at that time- likely a over-estimation that would still only translate to $94.8 million in todays economy. Thus the 250 million estimated cost of development (which could be more, companies spend way more advertisement in the modern age) would still eclipse the cost of the ET game. However, I would agree that within the gaming landscape that the hit the ET game took- compared to cost was remarkably significant and thus had a real effect on the entire industry. Whereas Concords development cost is less than or around the same price as other major triple AAA front line releases of 2024. Especially those in the live service circle and thus MIGHT not have as significant of any impact, but that is still to be seen and constant failures do add up and can change an industry.

It's not possible to have a 1983 crash anymore thanks to self-publishing and digital downloads, but the big corporation/investor funded businesses can still go out of business... same thing with book publishing, now technically everyone has their own printing press, so it's not gatekept the same way as it was back in the 1900's.

the 1983 crash never happened. people stopped buying mattel and atari 2600 games in 1983. that's it. Arcades did record revenues, the C64 and 1541 Floppy drives took off in 1983 , Apple2 did great, Colecovision Adam did great.

I would not say we are in a crash, but maybe a re-balance more appropriate. People are more and more wary of big budget games than ever before for near endless reasons. The biggest though is cost, MTX, and politics. The push to $70 avg price is not going well. Constant push of live service and MTX injection is getting old for many. Finally, politics. Nobody wants to be told they are this or that, especially by developers on social media, when they flip out due to critisism. Indies , and AA games are where people are turning to in droves.

It's not exactly one to one with the '83 Gaming Crash (where a cottage industry went almost extinct; with modern gaming infinitely larger and more invasive), but the '24 Gaming Crash feels like an almighty correction none the less with the AAA sector getting decimated (with the current console generation outside of Nintendo a wasteland and too many dumb white elephants like Concord).

@@TedShatner10 What you're saying is it's less of a crash and more of a culling. You wouldn't be wrong and I agree - I'd even go so far as to say it's a necessary culling as the state of the industry is the result of the corruotion and rot of the AAA corporations.

I don't think that's as much of a problem today as back then for a variety of reasons. This could get lengthy but I'll try to keep it short... First, and most important, the industry as a whole is far more rubust and diversified now than in 1983 to the point that individual sections can be considered entire industries unto themselves. Mobile gaming is a wholly and completely different industry than PC gaming with its own ecosystem, for example. Similarly, indie gaming is completely different from AAA gaming, retro gaming is an entire ecosystem separate from modern gaming, and so on. We could lose an entire sector of games and it wouldn't affect the others for how differentiated and separate they are - mobile gaming could collapse tonight and it would barely affect the other markets. Second, video games were a far more niche and smaller hobby in 1983 than it is today. Back then, Atari and its competition were considered toys for children, and were often relegated to the toy section of department stores. It was very frowned upon for adults to play video games unless they were playing with their kids, which meant the entire industry was very volatile - what happened to Atari had a ripple effect on the other companies and vice versa. Today there are entire stores and websites dedicated to just video games. Third, that volatility and status as a niche hobby led to a very homogenized and interconnected market - there were only a few options to play video games, of which Atari and Commodore dominated, and the selection of games you could buy at the store was meager at best. The different platforms were easy enough to program for that there was a robust underground bootleg and indie scene, but unless you were a serious gamer and well connected, those were very difficult to find and your average grandparent or aunt/uncle looking for a birthday or Christmas gift wasn't going to find those games. When Atari went under, it took everyone around it down like the Titanic sucking survivors into the water. Fourth, and finally, the video game industry was in its infancy in 1983, and the market was extremely limited. Today, with 40 some years of consoles, games, developers and expansion to fall back on, even if every single AAA and AA studio collapsed at the same time, there would be literally thousands of indie developers ready to fill in the gap, and that's just for people who refuse to play anything released more than three years ago. Many of us have backlogs of games so large we likely will never be able to play them all before we die. The gaming industry as a whole is in rough shape, no doubt, and there likely will be a collapse of some kind in the near future (if it's not already starting), but the industry is also far more robust and varied than it was 40 years ago, so even if a near total collapse would be bigger than 1983, it would also be far more survivable for smaller developers and would, paradoxically, create a far more favorable market for those smaller developers to thrive in. In all honesty, the industry kind of needs a big collapse to cull the corrupted and diseased core companies out of the industry.

According to the internet, the Atari 2600 had around 400-500 games at the time of its demise. Last year alone on Steam alone, over 14000 games were released. There seems to be plenty of money for game studios to chase.

    • @ItsAllDougAndGames
      @ItsAllDougAndGames 18 дней назад

Excellent point. The size of the market is exponentially larger today than in 1983, ergo it is exponentially less likely that a crash now would be as impactful on the market.

As of a few days ago I very much tossed this idea around, more than a handful of times. Concord as well as Stadium Events have very similar sales situations and both considered the rarest game for their system (Concord is the rarest PS5 physical release at the moment). The only other game that holds parallel to these two titles is NBA Elite 11 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 but honestly at this point I would say these three games are in a league of their own in the sense that they are the most desirable and have a story that will creat their spots in gaming history. Like you said, for those who are completists or want to own a piece of gaming history then that is what Concord will be to someone of a serious collector probably within the next 20+ years from now if the game doesn’t get another rerelease anytime soon.

@toastrave7820 Have you actually played NBA Elite 11 before? I have and it’s very glitchy, buggy and not even fully functional or playable which is why it was pulled last minute to begin with. The game wasn’t finished when EA Games shipped copies to stores and they found out very last minute. It might as well be in the same boat as Concord in the sense that both games are trash and had a very short time for people to purchase copies of and both have alike reasons for being recalled.

Raising prices to $70 is a big mistake Because people's expectations rise along with it. And if games don't meet that guess what? People aren't going to buy these games anymore. Instead looking towards smaller experiences at a fair price. So sales are lost and you end up having a deep discount a month later which dramatically reduces revenue even further. Go back to $60 and I guarantee the industry will adjust accordingly and look healthy again.
