I mean this with no ill intent but most of these problems do derive from some skill issue Garbage lines not being stopped when clearing lines is a completely avoidable and managable mechanic. Becuase garbage can't be stopped by any line clear, it forces the defender to have to plan their attacks so that they cancel the garbage in order to survive, rewarding efficient and thoughtful play. Surviving in PPT just requires a different gameplan. While 4-wide is a very powerful strategy, that doesn't mean it's unbeatable. There have been many strategies and openers that have developed over the years that can counter center 4-wide opener and dt cannon 4 wide, Ms2 or any tdpc opener for example. Additionally, 4-wide in the midgame is also a good strategy, but if your opponent was able to set up an entire 4 wide midmatch, then that probably means you weren't being efficient enough in your offense. The thing in Tetris v Puyo, especially in PPT1, is that while Puyo may get more solid damage out of their chains, the speed of which tetris and Puyo can output it is pretty unbalanced. Once you learn good setups, and practice movement in tetris, the speed of which tetris can output damage will start matching and far exceeding what puyo can do. While it's not impossible for Puyo to win, its very hard at the highest level. If your looking for more balanced Tetris v Puyo gameplay stick to PPT2, Puyo sends more damage in that game which evens the playing a teensy bit. Lastly, I just wanted to note on the speed of this game in comparison to TEC. Both PPT and TEC have an unadjustable DAS and line clear delay, so they're actually both pretty comparable in speed wth PPT slightly beating it out. I assume you play more TEC than PPT so if the difference in play deters you, I would just reccomend trying to get comfortable with the different das and see how long pieces take to move. Also a note, if you hold a direction before a piece spawns, the piece will actually go at max speed immediately and wont have to take time to get to full speed, drastically increasing apm. Now will I say are these things annoying for newcomers to midlevel players, definitely. But that doesnt mean they dont have counterplay or are completely unmanagable features. Now do people have preferences? Definitely. And I'm not saying this to say that the way you feel about the game is wrong, but that when you learn how to play the game, these "problems" can end up making the game more unique and interesting, if you just take the time to learn about them.

Interesting to hear this from a Tetris player's perspective. I've been the guy who's been loudly complaining for years about what this game did to Puyo Puyo - I wrote a 20 page essay on the subject a few years back. But for all the complaints I have about the game itself, those are ultimately secondary to my anger at how Sega has handled the franchise ever since. At least you guys have Tetrio, Effect, Jstris, Cambridge, so many good alternatives. But all we ever got was Champions, a versus mode-only client that's so bare bones I get yelled at for trying to convince anyone to play it, and... PPT2. Sigh. I do have to point out though that it's an undeniable fact though that the top of the leaderboard is nothing but Tetris players. Go fast and Puyo dies before it ever gets a chance to even play. Though I feel like the even worse issue that gets overlooked in these balance arguments is the fact that to even try to survive, the Puyo player has to unlearn everything they know about playing the game normally. Nevermind who actually has the advantage, at the the end of the day it's just a bad game mode that none of us want to play.

The main problem with Puyo Puyo Tetris’ Tetris mode is that it has to be nerfed to match Puyo. The gameplay is slowed to match the slow stacking speed of Puyo and how slow chains are to fire. 1) Messy garbage Puyo Puyo Tetris likes to shuffle which column has the hole every time the source of damage changes, like for example, the garbage coming from the 2nd chain will likely have the hole in a different place than garbage coming from the 3rd chain. This also serves to equalize the game difficulty with Puyo Puyo, where garbage comes from above and covers the current pieces in play, and therefore has a much harder time continuing to play than Tetris. In Tetris, you can just casually tank 8 lines and still fire that T-Spin Triple you built up. In Puyo Puyo, no luck. 2) Garbage coming in even after clearing lines I thought this was standard. Doesn’t Tetris Party do that? Either way, stalling by downstacking will only get you so far. Plus, it brings the features into parity with Puyo Puyo, where (unless you’re playing Fever mode) if you can’t offset the damage in one turn, you take damage. 3) 4-wide Competitive Tetris in general has the same problem of 4-wide being too OP. Jstris actually detects 4-wide and sends the garbage back to you in some modes. 4-wide can’t be “fixed” unless huge changes are made in the Tetris Guidelines to de-emphasize combos/RENs. In conclusion, PPT sucks, but not for any of those reasons.

The only thing really bad about PPT1 is the way they wrote the characters Otherwise it’s fine to play, i guess you can argue that puyo is more powerful than tetris so it’s a little bit unfair, but for me it seems like a GG get good thing
