The Mig Diaries - FSAAFM Presentation, September 2023
We were fortunate to have Lionel Reid, the author of The Mig Diaries and Sean Thackwray, the book's illustrator, as our guest speakers in September. Cobus Toerien, ex-Air Force and an experienced pilot who flew Boeing 737-800s at SAA with Lionel, introduced the two.
We thank Lionel, Sean and Cobus for their time and for sharing their incredible stories!

Its amazing to see how the shacks used to fly and to see ol' 1722 flying even on video is amazing
Why did ill-fated Pelican 16 land early? Only one 3-ship fly past in perfect formation. Editing is a bit out of sequence, planes all land, then more fly past clips, perhaps the best near the end at full speed. When you see the 737 taking off you realise it is much more powerful maritime patrol/attack plane (with some modifications).
LOOVEEEEEE THAT SOUND❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Listen to the sound of those engines ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ It’s music to my ears, these engines sing very well ❤❤❤❤

Wow so nice to see the ol
I remember when i was in high school in goodwood...J G Meiring in 1966..the shacks and havards would fly just about everday...good old days
Used to go to Ysterplaat airshow as a young man then, just to see these majestic birds👏🇦🇺
This was not the final flypast. If my memory serves me correctly, which it has done for the past eighty years, the final flypast was performed by Captain Dagg in Pottie's Private Bomber, Pelican 22, when he flew in submarine attack mode, at full speed and at an altitude of 300 feet, right over Ysterplaat! I remember the huge grin on his face, and I could see every rivet on the old beauty. Yes, she was thought of as the elephant - grey and wrinkled on the ouside and dark and smelly on the inside! I don't remember the exact date of the final flight of Pelican 22, but I have it on video somewhere in the dark, dank interior of my computer! Well done, boys! I look forward to the International Museum Day at Ysterplaat on Saturday 18 May, especially to witness the ground run of this aircraft now that its engine problem has been healed by such dedicated and loving hands. The thunderous sound and ground-shaking vibrations will never be replaced nor forgotten!
This was the final fly past where all of them flew together for the last time. They were officially retired from service at this fly past.
Also tried to get on to these in the 70s
Beautiful old girl
You guys really make nice videos and really well done in the restoration!😁
I have read the book cover to cover (received as a gift in October), loved it, and enjoyed watching the behind the scenes as it were.
OUUUUTSTANDING book! VERY well researched. Brought it up in my OSH Flogger presentation as a great read! Any help locating Sean Thackwray? Can't seem to locate an address for him. LOVE the drawing of the Flogger going balls out!
Absolutely amazing introduction. I want the book now.
Amazing video with incredible stories!
I always ran outside to look when those Shackletons flew over. Lordy they were giving it the beans in those last flyovers. Marvelous sound!
Great work guys.
Very interesting and encouraging, well done chaps! Have a look at the fascinating youtube video SABRES MIRAGES 01 1 01 2 01 3: it shows SAAF Sabre 361/F in full flight - filmed from the cockpit of another Sabre.
When are we going to see more videos of the restoration process?
The next video will hopefully be up before the end of the month!
Do you guys have an Instagram I can shout out? I have a pretty popular account dedicated to the SANDF and I'm sure there would be some vets and Pilots that would love to help you out!
Hi there, Yes we do! It's @fsaafm.
Well done gents! A fantastic effort and an inspirational video.
I'm so proud of you Matthew and Montagu - a stellar ongoing job and a beautiful clip.
Well done for all your hard work and awesome presentation. Your dedication will be appreciated by all who see this aircraft now, and in the future. A great legacy for the next generation.
Wow boys fantastic job!
