A Director's Cut of my solo kayak camping trip down the Petawawa River from Cedar Lake to McManus Lake. In this version, I give more insight and information about what's happening, why I made some choices, and about the Petawawa River itself.

Kayaking Lake Superior | Strong Winds, Big Decision - Ep 2
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 месяца назад
Part 2 of my sea kayaking adventure on Lake Superior, along the coast of Lake Superior Provincial Park. After a challenging 2nd day, which involved strong winds and big waves, I'm heading into one of the most difficult sections of the trip. It involves paddling along the most remote and unprotected shoreline of the Park. To complicate things, the wind has become even stronger, and my shoulder i...
Kayaking Lake Superior - A 5-Day Solo Kayak Camping Adventure - Ep1
Просмотров 13 тыс.2 месяца назад
Kayak camping on Lake Superior has been on my bucket list forever, and I finally got to do it this season - a solo trip along the coast of Lake Superior Provincial Park, from the Agawa pictographs and Sinclair Cove, to Rock Island Lodge in Michipicoten Bay. To say that it didn't disappoint would be a huge understatement. Lake Superior is beautiful, challenging, and unpredictable, and without a ...

I very much enjoyed this trip with you. It was long and it took me a couple days to watch it all. There was so much more to this trip than people think about because you are alone. You have to make decisions that could affect your personal outcome and safety. Plus, you are also the videographer which means it takes lots of extra time to set up and film certain parts. I admire your adventurous attitude and skills. I would never have run this trip, camping and alone. I could tell how heavy your load was by how low that Remix sat in the water on some of the flatter sections. I’m impressed and I’ll be watching more. Yes, I liked the directors cut because I learned a lot of background things that are important plus we all make mistakes and it’s good to see the ones you make and how you handle them. Merry Christmas!

Ken, job with the back stories. Love the behind the scene talk. Have you ever done a WhiteWater 101 video? I watch your whitewater intensely to see how you pick your lines but understand what I'm seeing. I dont do whight water but I did get cought up in a class2 once. Was short lived but I made it.

Glad you enjoyed it! Regarding whitewater 101... I actually haven't done a RUclips video of this nature in ages. I'm overdue. I started off my 'career' writing and publishing a number of whitewater instructional books and videos, and so there's some old stuff around... but I'm due to create some new content about whitewater for beginners. I will definitely keep that in mind for this coming season. Cheers!

I'm dying for a whitewater tripping kayak with that extra length. The XP10 was nice, but I would have preferred another 1-2 feet in length... and a few other changes too. I haven't found the ideal whitewater tripping kayak yet. In fact, I don't think it exists yet. Hopefully it does soon!

I watched the previous set of videos before I went on a September whitewater rafting trip on the Green River in Colorado & Utah, which I mostly did in a tandem or solo inflatable kayak (a much more forgiving craft, of course!). It was really useful preparation to follow along as you chose your lines. And I also really found your "no need to paddle hard into that next rock you're trying to miss" approach to feel right -- I was paddling stern in the tandem and I definitely passed that word to my bow paddlers. 🙂 Thanks for taking us along on this beautiful river and providing the additional commentary as well.

Well Ken two cups of coffee a packet of biscuit and two and a half hours later and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this again. It was so interesting with your commentary I particularly enjoyed the parts where you were telling people about what you would run what you wouldn't run and what you would run if you had somebody with you. I have to say I agree with you 100% about paddling alone so you really don't know what's coming next which makes the adventure even more exciting. However some rivers you can paddle a thousand times and you always see something new. You should do more of these videos with even more commentary. 👍👍

You should seriously consider taking a long form of this video (edit out the stuff where you're standing and talking to the camera, keep all the beauty stuff of you on the water or on the shore), take out the talk track and just have sound effects and some new age music, and make it available as the kind of background video people play to relax and get into a state of mindfulness. It would be perfect for it. I've been running it in the background while I do other things and it's excellent for that. (I enjoyed it with the commentary track too, but it doesn't have the replayability that a long music-and-sfx-only version would have). Love these videos regardless.

I know that I suggested hanging with isometric therapy exercises. And it worked incredibly well for me. But sleeping positioned over pillows that form a slot for your arm to drop into was another part of my success. I bought an expensive foam system (Medicine) but you can do the same with a memory foam pillow under your rib cage and a parallel pillow under your head creates a slot. I don't need that since completing the 2 months of daily hanging anymore. But it sure helped me sleep during the early part of my recovery.
