Dye Time #227: Tie Dyeing A Cotton T-Shirt, Liquid Dyeing A Top, Indie Dyer, Hand Dyed Clothing
#indiedyer #indiedyed #indiedyedyarn #handdyed #handdyedyarn #tiedye #tiedyed #fibrereactive #fiberreactive #liquiddye
While sorting out my undyed yarn box, I found my last t-shirt! I decided to dye it in some of favourite colours; blues and purples. I've ice dyed a few t-shirts but I didn't have any ice, so I liquid dyed instead. I was curious to see how different this would be.
Fibre reactive dyes can be used on plant based fibre and animal based fibres. Acid dyes can only be used on animal based fibres.

the red came from the blue violet
I think the yarn came out pretty. Speckling is not easy for me yet.
Thank you! I struggle with speckling but I always love the outcome.
Great spiral!
Thank you!!
I have to say I am also not a huge fan of blue and orange together, I was way skeptical 🤣 but they came out AWESOME! Good job!
Thank you! I was skeptical too, but that’s what my kiddo wanted.
Oooo
Thanks!
O
Very cool!
Thank you!
Lovely! Need to try this sometime :)
You should!
Is fibre reactive similar to work with to acid dye?
When using an animal based fibre (such as merino, BFL, Jacob etc) I treat fibre reactive dyes the same way as I treat acid dyes. They might not completely exhaust, but some acid dyes don't either.
You can do things with cables in crochet, made up of post-stitches and crossing stitches!
I had no idea! I can barely crochet a base chain.
I'm surprised that the orange parts turned black instead of brown. I have overdyed orange before with black and the result was brown. Maybe it was the amount of black dye you used. Anyway, a perfect Halloween yarn! Thanks for the experiment.
Thank you! I think you're right, if I'd used less dye, the yarn would probably have turned brown instead of black. I didn't mean to use white so much black dye!
I love how this turned out! 😍 It's definitely something I'm going to try. And I'd be really interested in seeing a video of the idea you mentioned.
Thank you so much! I'm still planning on it, I just don't know when I'll get to it 😂
❤This was so much fun !😊 I love the colors and I could adjusted to my wardrobe 😊
Thank you so much!
❤ so lovely! I love the end product 😊
Thank you! So do I! I have no idea what I'll knit with it.
Very beautiful result 💓
Thank you! 😊
awesome video! love the idea to dye socks. I’ve only ever dyed yarn! i want to try! also, i was thinking: the pattern you like that you’re unsure how you achieved, i think it’s where the dye sprinkled around the ice cubes instead of melting on top of them!! then as the cubes melt more of the dye would be pooled up around there. so i’d say arrange the cubes in a cool way and see if that does it?
Ohh you're giving me ideas for new videos! Thank you! I will definitely try arranging the ice in different patterns. Now I need to start making more ice.
@@FromTheCauldron awesome!!! can’t wait to see the result!!! I love dyeing fabric, yarn and fibre!!!
Thank you! I have tried this and it works great!
That's great to hear!
Fascinating! I have not used fibre reactive dyes on protein yarns, only acid based dyes. My experience with acid ones on protein yarns is that the magenta-ish dye is really slow/reluctant to strike and bleeds and bleeds and cyan is also a bit slow and a bit of a bleeder too - but not as bad as the magenta. Are cyan and magenta fibre reactive dyes like that too on protein yarns? My thinking is that maybe the dye in your dye bath might have broken anyway just because you were using protein fibres. Just curious and taking a wild guess lol : )
I have noticed the cyans and magentas, whether they are acid or fibre reactive, are slower to bind to the fibres and can be bleeders (I'm looking at you turquoise (fibre reactive) and purple pop (acid)!) but as to why, I have no idea.
And I DO notice that the color does bind differently( basically whatever the darker color is tends to bind first, leaving the lighter shades behind on subsequent skeins) when dye is mixed with soda ash, which I think is interesting and I'm guessing must have something to do with the reaction happening with the acid and basic ingredients. No real idea though 🤷🤣 Those came out gorgeous though!
It was surprising that the second skein came out a different colour, not just different shade. But I've also noticed that when washing, blues come out first, then reds. I have no idea why. I'd love for someone to explain the science behind all this to me.
Also, super excited that you decided to try this! I've never seen anyone else do it besides myself🤣
You were my inspiration for this video!
So I don't know exactly why that happens but I've had a similar experience with particularly that shade of blue come out of my wools when using fiber reactive dyes, even when the dye is fresh and not mixed with soda ash. The rest of the color does bind, but for whatever reason that super bright turquoise seems to linger in the pan and come out when I'm washing. I've always been able to get the water to run clear, except on my roving, which I'm too scared to really wash 😅
I haven't dared dye roving in 'difficult' colours yet. I haven't even dared to dye 100g in one go! I'm far too scared I'll ruin it.
Such a beautiful blue <3
It really is!
Looks fab! Thanks for the video 😊
Thank you so much!
Great tutorial 😊. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Id love to know what other flavours you've done in the past?
I've done spiced cranberry gin before, with cinnamon, cloves and ginger. I've also done pink grapefruit gin with fresh ginger.
Looks like variegated.
Thanks!
That's lovely and I love the brown and the violet together.
Thank you! They're not colours that I would usually put together, but I think I should use this combination more often.
The blue speckles especially are stunning! I think you did the perfect amount.
Thank you so much!
Love how that turned out!
Thank you! I'm so happy with that hoodie. (I'm wearing it at the moment)
I love it
Thank you!
You may have already learned this but all fiber reactive dyes that aren't pure colors can split when doing a direct powder application like this regardless of what company you get the dye from. The splitting happens because the dye is a blend of colors instead of being a pure or single color dye. The farther apart the component colors are on the color wheel the more interesting and obvious the split will be. Both Dharma and Pro Chemical and Dye now have ice dyeing swatches for their procion mx dyes which give an idea of what to expect in color splits.
I didn't realise Dharma has ice dyeing swatches. I usually go through Facebook groups to find breaks that I love, then buy the dye.
@@FromTheCauldron The ice dyeing swatches from Dharma are fairly new.I want to say they added them in May or June of this year.
For speckling, try mixing a small amount of the dye with a small amount of citric acid, and then sprinkling with fingers. This gives a more consistent amount of sprinkles on the yarn. Loved the way this color broke.
I have tried this before with not much success. I will have to try again.
I've never thought of dyeing rolags! I will need to experiment with this as well, love your videos you always get such gorgeous and vibrant results. Thank you for sharing your fibre fun times 😊
Thank you so much! I was sitting there carding those rolags trying to figure out what to do with them. I thought this would be a fun experiment and if it was a total failure, it wouldn't be a huge disaster.
I like how your yarn turned out, it's very witchy! I'm new to dyeing and I like the idea of dyeing small amounts of yarn instead of a full skein.
Thank you! I find dyeing small amounts of yarn, 10g or 20g, is a great way to experiment. If I don't like the result, I haven't "wasted" a full skein. Good luck with your dyeing!
Love the colours and the speckles! I dye a lot of wool and, just like a lot of people in the knitting community, adore this little dots! Thank you for sharing🙏🏻
I’ve noticed that generally speaking, yarn dyers love the speckles and tie dyers/clothing dyers hate them. I love them but would like to try to dye a T-shirt without getting the speckles.
We are having a heat wave here in Canada, 38 forecast for today🥵🥵🥵 40 for a few days coming up!
I’d be a puddle on the floor in those temperatures.
Cool. Looks delicious with the noodles cooking
Thank you 😋
So nice! Love it!❤
Thank you!
Now what? you have to knit/crochet it?
Once I find the perfect project, I’ll knit it.
Unless you are terminally ill, I hope you mean "dyeing" when coloring your daughter's fabric. 😂
😂
Do you use hot water or cold water as you use your dyes?
Usually cold tap water. Some dyes dissolve better in warm tap water, which I usually only remember after I’ve tried dissolving them in cold water!
You make it so good, and this is real Art! Just do it! Awseome!❤
Thank you so much 😀
From Gerry- The purple and mint look beautiful together. Surprises are such fun. God bless.
Thank you so much!
So so sooooo much fun! Why are you so out of breathe? I hope you are well!
When I have my mask on, it sounds like I'm out of breath. I'm fine though! Thank you for asking :)
This is lovely. Makes me think of mother of pearl.
Thank you! I agree. I didn't set out to dye something that reminded me of mother of pearl, but I do love how these things turn out.
Its such a lovely colour. You are so inspiring 💕
Thank you so much!
What’s the smell like when you simmer the bath inside?
I can't describe it in any other way than horrible!
It's so beautiful, what will you make with it?
Thank you! I’m not sure what I’ll make with it. Possibly, it will make part of a hat along with my other samples.
Next time you dot his, you may get darker colors, that don't wash out as much, if you soak them in the soda ash first. You'll have to try that and then see if there is much of a difference. Loved these though.
I’m hoping to do that method soon. As it’s warming up, my project is less likely to refreeze!
I thought you were on top of your carpet! Haha
😂 the thumbnail photo was taken on the carpet.
