What are the book covers for? Are those the novels you will be reading for the year?
They are just for decoration! I usually put up covers of books that are popular or books that I recommend. It helps grab the students’ attention and get them interested in reading!
This was amazingly helpful as to how you approach the standards and translate all that into a calendar and pacing. This was exactly what I need to hear today. I just finished my first year of teaching. Thank you so much!!

I’m going to back to college and I’m going to learn how to drive and get my dream car and I’m going to get the Nintendo switch oled and then get the iPhone 13 and I’m going to move with my boyfriend to a new District near the new school I’m so excited I’m going to back to college and I’m going to get my education for teaching and degree I’m so excited I’m teaching English and I’m really excited 😆

Hi! I also teach middle school ELA (7+8) in Mass. I used to teach Boy in the Striped Pajamas, but I worked with a Jewish coteacher & she actually pointed out how it's culturally inappropriate to use to teach the Holocaust. That was eye opening for me! We transitioned to Anne Frank & Night. Just wanted to share! Love your content! So great to see fellow middle school ELA teachers :)
Thank you for sharing! We don’t currently teach The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, but we do read Night with our 8th graders. Since I only teach writing, many of the unused class sets are stored in my classroom. That way the other ELA teachers have room for the current novels in their rooms. I do believe the novel was only used twice a few years back as a literature circle option for struggling readers during a friendship unit. The students focused on and discussed the friendship between Bruno and Shumel, and it was not used to teach the Holocaust. Thanks again for sharing your perspective!
I had a 6th grade student who didn't know what an apostrophe was called describe it as "the comma but at the top??" 🤣
