MC REN (Shock Of The Hour) Revisiting a Classic
One of the illest albums I’ve ever jammed to is "The Shock Of The Hour" by MC Ren. Let’s roll back to 1993 and take a look at this timeless classic. It's not just an album; it's a straight-up masterpiece, but what makes it so dope? Let’s break it down and explore why this joint stands as one of the hardest hitters in the Gangsta Rap game during its prime.

Back in my teenage days, I used to think this record was straight garbage. Now, 30 years later, I gotta ask myself if I've flipped my opinion. I only gave this album a one-time spin way back in '95. So, what’s my take on it now? I’m about to dive into one of the most significant records from the West Coast-BG Knockout and Gangsta Dresta’s "Real Brothas" album. Now, don’t get it twisted; this is a Def Jam release, but it dropped shortly after Eazy-E passed away. In this video, I’m revisiting this dope alb...

The 2nd version of Mayday On The Front Line makes the album hold to a standard definitely. I'd give em a clean version for that soundtrack money, too. And they're both ill versions.

You mentioned a few times they were “ahead of their time” & I agree. I once interviewed Ras Kass & he spoke highly of Tha Mexakinz. Most underground hip hop artist at the time respected them. Unfortunately I think most Chicanos weren’t ready for their sound when they first came out. I think most of what they were doing went over a lot of their heads. Not speaking ill of Lil Rob but he was able to gain more commercial success with a simpler sound, lyrics & concepts. I’d give this classic an A. New subscriber. Much love

Quik's catalogue is legendary. Not even sure how you narrow it down to a top 10, because he has so many eras, so many different types of songs. You showed alotta love here to that "Under Tha Influence" album, which was a late career Quik project put out independently, so I'm not even sure how many people heard it beyond the "Put It On Me" single he did with Dr. Dre, which was in daytime radio rotation here in LA in that era. Anyhow, here's my top 10 in no particular order: 1. Safe & Sound 2. Born And Raised in Compton 3. Tonight 4. Dollaz & Sense 5. Somethin' 4 The Mood 6. Just Like Compton 7. Sweet Black Puzzy 8. When We Party 9. Lok'd Out Hood 10. Do I Love Her?

You should just get educated on the Wu Tang story and sound. Like do some background knowledge before doing these types of videos. You are approaching this from the notion that willful ignorance is somehow intriguing and it really isn't it just doesn't come off how you think it might be. Just trying to be constructive. Maybe do a liiiitle preparation? The song "labels" he's name dropping the names of record labels in the rap. You so blindly west coast the only thing that gave you pause was the "yo did he say MC Eiht?!" Then your like "nah this isn't good" Come on bro loosen your dickies up cuh. My man like "Rizz-aahh" Also how the FUCK do you listen to GZA album get to like the 10th song and still can't figure out who is GZA. I'm sorry i'm hating on your video but jesus...

Ohh, it's interesting that you don't care much for Micc Checc. I think that's the one that really sold me the album when I first listened to preview clips back in the day. I love the story telling, I love the voice overs in the end of each verses. Go back to the track, I implore, and pay attention to the bass that comes in during the hook, and the high pitched sine waves. Actually really really good G-Funk production in my opinion, rivaling the production on Above the Law's "Uncle Sam's Curse" - which also had a few strong, slower tempo G-Funk tracks. Production from the Danish duo Madness 4 Real, who did a bunch of stuff for Eazy and MC Ren in their post NWA careers.

I heard of B.G. Knocc Out for the first time on Flesh-n-Bone's solo album T.H.U.G.S. as he was on the song Comin' 2 Serve U, which incidentally uses the same instrumental that we would later hear as the unreleased Bone Thugs and Eazy-E cut Sleepwalkers. I was just slightly too young to remember Real Muthaphukkin G'z, but I would end up getting into Eazy-E about 3 years or so after his death because of being obsessed with Bone. This eventually led me to B.G. Knocc Out & Dresta through the tracks on It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa and a few cuts on Str8 Off the Streetz of Muthaphuckkin Compton. This would have been around 98 to 99 or so. I still remember being blown by the preview clips of tracks like Micc Checc, Do or Die, and Down Goes Another Nigga on one of the early online CD retailers, and had this album in wish list immediately. The album was still being sold in CD stores on the East Coast up until the early 2000's as I eventually bought my copy of the CD, which I still have, from the store. It's such an amazing album, but I think it came out too late in the west coast G-funk era, as it was already starting to wane, and I think they didn't have as much marketability without Eazy-E's guidance. So unfortunate, as this album is so much better than others that came out in the same year.
