My First 1933 Goudey (Finally), and Some More Pickups

If you want to get right to the '33 Goudey Charlie Grimm pickup, skip to 9:29. Grimm had a great career in baseball a stellar defensive first baseman who racked up 2,299 hits and a .290 batting average, he also managed 3 Chicago Cubs pennant winners and was Hank Aaron's first NL manager. I hope to add a few more notable player-manager cards over time. Also, check out the latest Bargain Hunters ...

My Strongsville Recap: Pickups and Thoughts
John we are pretty similar is some ways, I pretty much didn't collect vintage at all when I made my first video and I was hand model too. lol.
Nice cards and love your content my man...
Hi John Huge fan of your channel and thanks for talking about your experience as a youtuber. I agree that discovering cards by watching videos is a great experience. Thank you for sharing yours.
Awesome video John! It’s great to hear your collecting story and what you’re getting out having a you tube channel. I think having a channel truly enhances the hobby for me and meeting so many new people is the best part of the journey.
Thanks, Jason! I'm looking forward to seeing how my YT experience evolves in the months to come. Getting to know fellow collectors will continue to be at the heart of it.
Thanks John for an excellent response. Our collecting intervals are very similar as I had the same 30 year gap. It was great to hear your story. Your first video wasn’t bad at all. Congrats on the Ichiro autograph card.
Thanks, John! YT has made my hobby experience so much more fun.
Hi John. Nice VR and beautiful cards. Talk soon my friend.
Hahaha you describing your first video goal as just to get through the first video is exactly how my first video went. Too funny. Great stuff!
It was kind of a surreal experience to be sure. I mean, I guess our slice of RUclips is relatively small, but it was STILL RUclips! The act of pressing Record and Upload for the first time was no small feat. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey John, I am glad you pushed the record button and joined the community of content creators. I enjoy your channel and watching your collection grow.
Thanks, Terry. I really appreciate that!
Very nice prewar cards. They are the most fun to collect
Good VR, John! It was nice to hear your RUclips story. Take care!
Thanks, Rob! I'm glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Have a great weekend.
Pinson was great. I'd like to see him in the Hall eventually .
We have a similar journey, John- I can relate. Nice VR - thanks for sharing, good luck in the contest and good collecting 👍❤️ps. I’ve got that same poster in your background framed and on my wall- are we related?
I'm not sure, check with Chris from Missouri -- he has the same poster! I'd like to get the companion poster at some point that focuses more on prewar and references the Burdick Collection at the Met. Thanks for watching!
I think because of the RUclips community collectively we have to be way more knowledgeable than before RUclips. Even seasoned collectors learn a lot or think in new ways.
It's been a great experience tapping into -- and maybe even contributing to once in a while -- this wealth of knowledge that's been built.
I think we are all embarrassed when we watch our first video. It takes a bit of time to settle into a groove.
Sweet returns my friend!dug them all!
Hi John Wow awesome pickup in the Charlie Grimm card. So, I have none of the Goudeys, but I am like you in that I am hoping to find one I want to add to my collection. You are so right about the importance of that set and your fist 33 Goudey is beautiful. I did catch the bargain hunter's episode, and your Vada Pinson card is sweet. Loving that you guys are doing that contest/video premise and looking forward to the Koufax episode. BTW Tom Seaver is the greatest pitcher of all time :) but Koufax aint bad. Although you lost me when you said something about "really bad Mets teams". Hmmm They had Dave Kingman in the late 70s btw.... Just saying :) Anyway thanks for the video. It was a lot of fun to watch.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, and I'm glad you liked the video. There are probably a half-dozen other '33 Goudeys I'd really like to add some day; who knows, maybe I can pick up another or two over the next year. About the Mets, I will say they had Kiner's Korner back in the day, and as a 7, 8, 9-year-old kid in the early '80s, it was cool to watch a long postgame show with players in the studio on a late Sunday afternoon.
That is a great looking 33!
I love the Vada Pinson card, I've been picking up a few of his cards lately. The Charlie Grimm card is awesome.
Nice ttms
Vada Pinson is a very underrated player and his cards are undervalued! The 70 Pitching Leaders is a great card to own, regardless of price! The Charlie Grimm 33 Goudey is epic! I only have one 33 Goudey as of now, but I hope to add a few in the future! The Player/Manager idea for a collecting emphasis is a great one! Congratulations and thank you for sharing!
I know, right?! Four HoFers for $2? Absolutely! And I think this player-manager idea can help give me some focus and discipline. It's a long-term goal, but it's still a list that right now runs 10 cards. At the start of this year I liked the thought of not feeling "boxed in" by too many goals. Maybe because of that I was fortunate and able to add a nice range of vintage cards up through The National. But now I'm ready to re-establish some parameters around what I add moving forward. Thanks for the comment, Rick!
Awesome pickups Love the story behind the cards Good luck on the Koufax!!😊
Thanks, James!
Great Goudey! Welcome to the next fun phase of goal cards.
Thanks, Aaron -- I have a list of nine more player-manger cards I'd love to add over time (and years). With the Grimm, 10 seems like a nice round number!
Hey John! The Goudey is nice, but you know I love the Pinson. You got a great deal on it. Have a wonderful day, my friend!
Yeah, I do really like that Pinson. Those edges are tight. Thanks for the comment, Rob!
Hi John, I enjoyed the latest installment of Bargain Hunters. You and Steve both picked up fantastic cards. Nice Grimm pickup. I like that it has a story with the ticket that strengthens the connection. I think adding to the story by getting the autographs is a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
HI Terry, I'm glad you liked the Pinson episode. Those are very fun to do with Steve. Along with the seller's story with Grimm, I really enjoyed getting to learn more about Grimm's story. Underrated to the point of nearly forgotten outside of longtime Cubs fans. I think the angle of him being Hank Aaron's first manager as a Braves rookie is also very interesting.
Great job getting that Pinson! The 1962 cards are always a challenge
Thanks, Sammy! I was a bit surprised on the find myself.
Very nice Goudey pickup. That Pinson card for your challenge is amazing.
Thanks, Peter -- I really appreciate you watching and commenting.
Hey John, That 62 Pinson is a beauty, hunting for Sandy is going to be fun! I was just looking at my version of that 1970 pitching leaders with the four Hall of Famers on it, what a fantastic grab for $2. That Grimm Goudy is an amazing pickup, wow is that beautiful! Can’t wait to see how that one grades. Congratulations my friend!
Hey, Steve, thanks! Ungraded cards are perfectly awesome, but I think it's gonna be hard for me to keep the Grimm raw for a long time!
Well done 👍 🎉
Many thanks!
14:52 - looking at Hank Aaron's statistics on the back of his card. No wonder the guy is a Legend....he put-up some crazy #'s year-after- year!😳
John it looks like you did really well for your PC at the National! I enjoyed watching your pick ups. I love the thought behind the Reggie Super. I've added it to my "one day" wantlist. It's a really nice card!
Love this never tried that cite i use sportcard fourm
Great overview John. SCN is an amazing value. I've been a member since 2005. To date I've logged 3468 TTM requests. I alter slightly from you in that I handwrite full letters for each request. I do agree that the self-seal return envelopes are the best. ~Allon
Thanks for the comment, Allon, and wow, that is an impressive amount of TTMs. Two reliable '80s freebies going out today, Ed Vande Berg and Lynn Jones.
I"m starting to feel like SGC is a much tougher grader than PSA. Any iota of off center and they'll ding you 1 or 2 grades. PSA allows 60/40 centering to still be GM10's.
From what I've read and otherwise absorbed, I think SGC may be more consistent -- maybe that's consistently tough? Not sure, but with my experience with SGC I tend to see them kind of "reward" particularly strong centering. That might not be the best or right way to look at it, but it's just my interpretation of how they roll. Thanks for watching and commenting -- I really appreciate it.
Great video thanks John. I’ve been wondering how to start TTM’s appreciate it.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, and if it helps in a way, even better!
Awesome video and great information. I definitely plan on doing this...I just never really knew how to get the players information. Now I do! Thanks again!
Thanks, Michael -- I really appreciate it! Good luck and have fun with it!
Well done 👍 🎉
Cool video, I’m putting together the hall of famers ungraded. I started collecting in 86 so I never had any of these cards as a kid, like this set because it gives you feel of vintage without a steep price.
@@victorquick3476 That's a great way to put it -- vintage feel, without the steep price. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the comment. Hope you find some great examples as you continue the HoF run!
Hi John. Really nice reveal of some really great cards, thanks for sharing my friend. Talk soon pal.
@@RipFan8 Thanks, Stephen -- I really appreciate it!
Need 300 91 UD Howard Johnsons? 😂 Congrats on 200 videos. I’m getting ready to make a “milestone” video, once my subscriber count surpasses the number of videos! 😂 62 Topps was never my favorite, but the Leader cards are cool. Floating heads are sometimes cool, especially when they’re bigger than a stamp! 👌👍
Hi John. Super awesome cards. I am glad you shared them with us especially the 1940 playball. I am collecting that set and its jam packed with great players, and they look even better in the SGC slabs. Have a great week.
That seems like an awesome set to collect -- good luck as you continue to build it! And I agree 100% -- the SGC B&W look combined with the Play Ball '40... (chef's kiss). Thanks for the comment!
Some beautiful cards there. Liked the ‘58 Mathews and the ‘57 gem mint 1 Willie Mays the most.
To me, that Willie is indeed a gem mint 1! Thanks for watching.
Nice! Those are some sick cards!
Thanks! I think they all look great in the SGC tux.
@@jpcards they do. All dressed up
Some great cards but the Willie Mays card with the big crease and ink on back was too beat up for grading. The 61 Clementa also too worn for grading.
Thanks for the comment -- I do appreciate it. About the Mays, I should've mentioned that one reason I decided to slab it was purely for protection. The crease is severe enough and the paper stock weak enough in that spot that I was afraid it could tear at some point.
Congrats, John! Great looking cards!
Thanks, Bill -- I appreciate it!
Agree with Palmer being underrated in the hobby! $6 for that auto is crazy.. great pick up.
Gave a video like. Great return! Love the’53 Campy. You did really well 👊
Thanks, Brian! The Campanella, even with the staining, is a beauty with that red background. Still, the 4 was a very pleasant surprise.
The 69 Clemente looks great. Nice submission.
Thanks, Bruce
Sweet returns, John! I’d be proud to have all those cards in my collection. My favorite of the bunch is the Campy. Beautiful color! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day, my friend!
Like given! Nice cards, love the Clemente's. I am a little partial being a Pirates fan...lol Love them all and the Campy is great as well. Enjoyed the watch, thanks for sharing. 👍👍 until next time, have a great day John ✌out
Thanks, Andy! Pirates black and gold can look downright dapper in the SGC tux. Glad you enjoyed the reveal.
@@jpcards You're welcome John and they sure do look good in those tuxes. Unfortunately as good as they do look in the tux, I have PSA slabs in my collection and I like everything to match. I know, weird. But if I was to start over again, I would probably go SGC. Only thing I don't like about them is the ginormous number grade on the slab. Other than that, they're simply marvelous as Billy Crystal would say...lol Thanks for the reply and have a great week 👍
Awesome cards, congrats
Thanks, Orlando -- I appreciate it!
