Strange to leave the sap in the furniture, most competent woodworkers remove it because they know the timber eat bugs will be attracted to it.

Gustav Stickley and Frank Loyd Wright are my American Arts & Crafts hero's . Frank for his houses and Gustav for his Mission furniture , so wonderfully bold and elegant / balanced the same time . Only the greatest artists can master this delicate game of balance . They , together with William Morris are my lifelong inspirators . A house in itself is just a kind of bare box , but these giants gave it a hart and soul worth living in .

That furniture is just stunning , out of this world . The forms , proportions and types / collors of wood are just perfect ! We Dutchies have our 17th century painters , but you Brittish people are the masters of furniture in my opinion , just a perfect marriage between beauty and function , matchless !

Brilliant. I’ve been a (serious) amateur woodworker for over 45 years and my style of choice is Arts and Crafts. Not necessarily the very stark original Stickley - and not the over ornate (for me) Greene and Greene, but in between there are stunning examples of furniture design. I wish I had either the skill to make or the money to buy some of the stained glass work. Truly emotional. We live about an hour from London and our favourite museum is the Victoria and Albert. Such stunning works on display. I was asked if the A&C move, ent were the first Hippies; well, the idea to reject the standards around them and build their utopia is common to both but it seems to me that there are stark differences. However, these differences may well be a result of the different eras in which each movement was founded. The products of the English A&C movement were never cheap enough so that ordinary working people could furnish their house so. In that sense, the socialist principles failed. Where they succeeded was in the whole treatment of their workforces. Sadly, I see little evidence of that today .

You are so right sir ! William Morris was more an idealist than a realist . When you concider the amount of hours that go in to manual labour , you just can't beat the machine . Gustav Stickley the American furniture maker understood that much better . Where ever possible he used machines for the fabrication of joints and that kind of repetitive work , what made his quality Mission furniture affordable . But I guess socialists are usualy more idealistic than realistic anyway . 😄😄😄

It is more than probable our surroundings are of great use to dictate our natural inclinations. Organised restrictions, for instance, refuse us imagining more comforting dream like possibilities. My personal journeyed example is: “I do very much enjoy to read and write but am refused via a mob rule expert in torture” * * * The worst of it is that their mob tactic demands that you become reliant upon a government handout. Once settled in such a managed arrangement they then ferry you to and from locations that help improve the networking of their own families and associated companies within the arts and crafts of creative enterprise, all the while stemming and discouraging your creative involvements in life. “So what encouragement of mine are they using at the moment then” asked the seated disabled man?

It’s interesting to look at the history of the Gordon Russell company. GR died in 1980; it was bought at some point after that by a group of companies (including Giroflex UK) led by a gentleman named Chester Dwight Wedgewood. It continued to use beautiful timbers but I can’t help but think that it relied more and more on volume and less and less on design - perhaps a reflection on what was needed to make money. At some point the whole business was purchased by Steelcase Strafor- a UK subsidiary of the Steelcase (USA) and Strafor (France) joint venture. Here, again in my opinion, it completely lost whatever nod to the heritage of GR remained. It had a factory in Swindon producing contract furniture which I see as having no real design merit. It introduced a new veneer to the market - I think it’s name was ultra veneer - which was produced by taking a whole load of unrelated, less quality veneers, forced to together and then slicing so that the product had no grain characteristics, no individuality, no sense that it came from a living tree - but it was wood. I can only be grateful that GR was dead at this time because I think he would have been appalled. Not surprisingly, the combination of an Arts and Crafts heritage and a metal furniture business did not last. There are still companies out there named Gordon Russell but I confess that I do not know anything about them .

Some of these comments do fall short. Okay, the lady narrator isn’t the most naturally gifted public speaker but aren’t we supposed to rate the words above the delivery? As a native English speaker, I can understand the speech quite easily - but I accept that some people whose first language is not English might find it harder to follow. Having said that, I watch several French language channels and I think they speak very fast. The ethos about only having things either useful or beautiful is fine for the middle and upper classes. Those poorer classes mentioned in the video could not think about having such thoughts. Where the movement could help them was not enriching their lives through buying A & C work but by getting training and employment producing the work. True that woman aren’t really mentioned in this video but anyone who has studied Arts and Crafts would understand that it was, certainly for the time, very much non-gender based. Very many of the great works were crafted by woman. We are very lucky in being able to go to places and see pure Arts and Crafts work. There are also many more places where the influence of arts and crafts is very strong.

Ladri disinformatori...
