I remember when I took Shotokan 40 years ago on my High school days but just for 1 month. we sparred bare-fist and no armor but we are not allowed to punch and kick the face, only the body. but most of the time there were astray strikes hitting the face; and some have nose bleed, and injure lips or contusion mark.

what the people wanted to see is a continuous punching and then followed by a kick. This Shotokan way is to deliver even one punch that can can knockout. That is why the force exerted on a punch or kick. It is not to pounce an opponent by flurry of punches but to give one or two strikes and it is over. here in this tournament the players are to control their punches not to seriously injure. I hope one can get a punch on the face and we will see.

To the people who say this is nothing like real fighting I suggest you give it a go. This is the JKA. Both in the dojo and in tournaments its not uncommon for teeth to be knocked out (and spat out) and bones to be broken and the fight just carries on as if nothing happened. I've seen people get knocked out many times. There are no pads, often no mouth-guards. Decades ago when I was young I was nidan with the JKA. If you don't think the JKA senseis in Japan can fight, try them out with your weekend MMA moves and see how far you get.

That first round: bro, how did you NOT realize what your opponent was up to? He backed you all the way up because you were just staring at each other.

Not a hard kata to learn, but an extremely difficult one to do well. It's definitely a challenge. IMO, Gankaku and Enpi are two of the most difficult kata in all of Shotokan because the movements just aren't natural. Amazing performance!

For correct hip movement please refer to videos of Osaka Sensei,Kawasoe Sensei and Ohta Sensei.Even better refer to Nakayama Sensei's Best Karate books volume 1,2 and search for Jun Kaiten and gyaku kaiten everyone will get the answer.

I'm not sure what you mean. The JKA have several hip systems. Personally I use a different method but none the less what he is doing is pretty good IMHO.

Superb demonstration and something we can really study & learn from. Thank goodness that he made that small wobble (balance loss) before final yoko geri keage. Otherwise I would be wondering if he was even human.
