Journal of a Musical Journey
Destination: wherever it may take me.
Learning to play the banjo for the third time in my life. Preparing for a banjo camp last year required learning to create videos of my playing. I realized that video recording can be an excellent training tool: if you can't record a good video without stumbling, the tune isn't ready for a jam session, let alone prime time. It's also a great way to remember what I played last time I picked a particular tune. So, now I am using videos to check progress and listen to my creations as a third person afterwards.
Now, I've started sharing videos I think have reached jam level quality with jam colleagues for their critique, and hopefully inspiration as well as with friends I know like the music. If not the destination of the journey, the intent of the path I am walking is to elevate my banjo playing to a new level. When I think a tune meets that criterion, I'm sharing it publicly.

The Letter: Country Ramblers
A rock song first played by the Box Tops in the 1960s. It has all the ingredients of a bluegrass song, we think. Recorded at Kulturschachtle Adliswil on 5 July 2024.

A Hundred Years From Now: Country Ramblers

When it's "Encore" time at the end of our concerts, we like to feature Roland's prowess on his spoons percussion set. Meant to be a fun show for the audience rather than exquisite musical contribution.

The World We're Living In: Country Ramblers

A lament about the world we're living in, written by Jack Skinner decades ago but has not lost any of its relevance. Nevertheless a song not often heard. Tom Matejovsky sings lead.

A really crafty old train song written by Paul Craft. The title song of this CD.
Huckleberry Hornpipe: Country Ramblers

An early Byron Berline fiddle tune that's been a lovely challenge for banjo and guitar as well. The recording was made after a tour in the homeland of the music in 1977. We keep it in our repertoire...
Southbound Passenger Train: Country Ramblers

A Mississippi John Hurt song we learned from Doc Watson. It is one of the few a cappella songs in this music without religious content that we have come across. Entertainment pure!
Caravan: Country Ramblers

Duke Ellington's impression on a caravan at dawn with the wind blowing.

Jimmie Skinner wrote this song but Jimmy Martin made it one of his signature tunes. It helped me understand and integrate some of J.D. Crowe's banjo technique.
Kinfolks in Carolina: Country Ramblers

A tune from Doc Watson's playbook that isn't often heard these days. I felt that it would adapt well to banjo, too, and my band colleagues agreed.

Fantastic! Uplifted me on a gloomy day. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! That's what music is for. Thank you for the feedback!
Picking that fast or even faster wasn't a problem back then, was it. Now, just a good memory. Oh well...
Thank you for your comment. As we age, we are likely to develop issues with our joints, etc.. So far, I've been lucky. But to get back to those kinds of speeds requires a lot of practice and continued playing. If you don't challenge yourself, you lose it. But maybe that's not altogether bad, there's a lot of good slower tunes around that keep the music enjoyable.
Very impressive...to be able to sing and back up with such intricate banjo is totally beyond me.See you in Astoria
Love this!
Always on the best. I love it!
Wow, wow, wow! you are getting better and better. Thank you for sharing the lyrics, great help :). Keep going, I am and will always be a fun!
Thank you, Jairo! Will do!
Great tune and played in key of F without any capo. You shure have a unique and great kind of playing. And you also sing along while Banjo playing. Who else does this? 😎😊💪🏻
Thank you very much, Piero. There are a few, but no one I am aware of uses the banjo like others do a guitar. I'm trying to explore that while learning new techniques. I see you continue to be active, too. It is a fun instrument!
Thoroughly enjoy your unique approach to music. See you tomorrow at the whiskey bar🪕🎻🎶
Thanks so much, John. Look forward to hearing what strikes you as unique.

Yay, thank you Gudrun!
Enjoyed it. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it, Pillou.
Nice
Thanks Al
This is SO good. You should have a million fans!!
Thanks for the encouragement!
It works! Great. Glad you referenced the Harris, Parton & Ronstadt recording. Also noting the late great Bill Keith's take on it. I do a bluegrass version of the Rolling Stone's "No Expectations;" in the course of working on it, another banjo player referred me to Bill Keith's arrangement of that song. Sounds like you're being very productive while in seclusion.
Thanks, Allen. Yes, No Expectations with Jim Rooney from Something Auld..... is a driving little number, I look forward to hearing you version one of these days.
Excellent!
Glad you liked it!
