BMW doesnt really give a shit about customers that don’t lease their vehicles . They infact hate their enthusiasts . And they don’t want you to work on your own car . They only sell you parts at their dealership bc they kind of have to for legal reasons 🤣🤣🤣. And the parts they do sell you are so rediculously overpriced . Like everything they do . BMW is being run by some bitch in germany like a fashion brand . Not like the car company we all loved until 2001 😑

Change your oil every 5000 miles and you greatly reduce the chance of this happening !

bite the bullet and have it done as preventative maintenance, once you've got it out the way, you can sleep at night knowing your n47 will last many years to come.

Mine is a 2012 but I'm getting it changed just in case because I've heard of later model chains snapping

They scrape together a few dudes, one of which cries about a car with 100k on it having a major issue. Why doesn’t he ask BMW to put fuel in his car too given that they made it so are always responsible for it. The M47 is agricultural, the N47 is a bit more lively and better on fuel. Given the sheer volume in which the N47 was produced a few watchdog victims and some forum kerb clippers don’t even account 2% of production volume.

If you drive hard and long Miles dont bye Bmw diesel cars. Even you chance oil ever 10k Miles is not enought. The time chain it will fail . No depends of good maintenence or well driving , Is a constrution problem. I like very much everything else about the car but i can change more chains. The last one (original Bmw chain and every parts kit ) do 50000 Miles . Its impossible to keap.

My timing chain went on my 3 series last year, a 2013 model with 84k miles, thankfully after a month of arguing they agreed to put a brand new engine in if I paid the labour costs. Massive relief from the £11k they originally wanted to replace the engine.

This happened to us today and I've now got totally different view of buying another BMW. The whole engine is useless. Car value is virtually zero.

My n47 engine hit 200,000 miles before the chain started making a noise, done another 3000 miles before getting it changed.

N46 engine here. Apart from a VVT motor fault at one point, flawless engine even at 240,000kms

I have e39 520i,e36 318is,e46 320d now i got e90 318i,to have a bmw need to know to be mechanic all after 2005 have different problem most of them with chain with e90 because i fix myself i saved a lot of money

I've got a 123d 2008 and had a chain replacement couple years back, but it ran dry a little few month back after a oil leak now that's sorted I have a little rattle from the chain, been told might be worth trying to change the tensioner bolt that accessible from the outside, what do you think and where is it? Hate my 320 06 plate don’t have a oil dip stick so keeps saying low oil so had more in then one day smoke came out got a service and had way too much oil Went to drive home after the service got on the m1 and the engine went bang The garage forgot to fit the oil drain bolt properly. And yer they said it was on before I drove off
